Hair loss with weight loss??

I used to do weights when I was 47kgs (I looked very healthy at this weight btw), I didn't lose/gain weight but I definitely looked more toned and was more muscly, but I still didn't have a flat stomach (did ab circuits everyday and are healthily). I just thought being around 46kg would put me in a perfect body with a bit flatter of a stomach. But everyone here is saying I've got BDD like I don't know what looks good on my body after being all these different weights... I don't have BDD people!!!
I'm sorry, but denial is one of the main components of BDD.

Yep. I spent several months eating below 1200 (and often 1000), wised up, then started losing my hair a couple of months later (Feb/March). It seems to have stopped falling out fairly recently and I began eating sensibly in December.
OP, get help from a professional regarding self-image.0 -
Ugh thanks for your help everyone. I appreciated the recommendations that suggested maybe even 1kg per week was too rapid, thank you for your advice I'll definitely keep that in mind.
But to all the comments saying I have an eating disorder, don't you think you're being very rude to someone you don't know? I'm here TELLING you I don't have an eating disorder. I've been practically the same weight for 4 years. This diet I went on was 4 years ago. I haven't dieted since. The word "chubby" is pretty subjective and I'm sorry for even mentioning it but that's what I thought was appropriate for what my body looked like. My legs and arms are always skinny but the rest of my body holds all the weight, so it tends to get kind of "chubby" if I put on a kg or two.
As for the diary. Thanks for trying to accuse me of locking it out when it's mentioned, but if you look up I did say that I was using it incompletely. I haven't been adding my dinners because I've just been using it like a counter of what I eat up until about noon. And as for why they were so low? I've had influenza for the past two weeks so stomaching anything much has been a bit of a task. That's why I put it in private, so no one thought to comment on it. But I'm better now, and that's why I was asking you guys for diet advice!
Thanks to the people who genuinely cared.0 -

You may never have a "flat stomach" not every woman or man can achieve that. Genetics, build etc may all mean you will NEVER have a flat stomach.

Yeah but I meant flat that comes from a tight core. Firm might have been a better word.0 -

Then you should start lifting weights to tighten/firm your core.0 -

Yes.... And what I was saying is that I used to lift weights and doing core exercises when I was 47kgs, religiously. And I couldn't ever get a firm stomach, so I thought losing an extra kg of weight would reveal the firm stomach underneath. That is what I've been saying.
But this is literally all unrelated to my question anyway

I started loosing hair when i went vegetarian the first time. You most likely are not getting enough nutrients. You need a well balanced diet to stay healthy. I am loosing weight just fine now without loosing hair.0

you are correct...you asked why you lost hair 5 months after dieting to the point of being underweight...
and that was answered...malnutrition which can take up to 5 months to appear.0 -

I'm very short so I was actually quite chubby at 51kg.
No I wasn't losing 2.2kg a week, it was 1kg a week! And I don't know what I can do to convince you guys but I when I was 45kg before, I was very healthy looking, filled out in the right places and nobody would've called me underweight.. I have photos if you want proof but I'm 100% you would agree that I looked healthy
That's 2.2 pounds a week, and that's way too much for a person of your size.0 -
Your hair will not fall out again if you are getting adequate nutrition. This includes enough vitamins & minerals as well as proteins and healthy fats. As others have mentioned, don't attempt to lose too much too fast. And resistance training will help firm you up so that you can probably be happier at a higher goal weight than you think. How you look is about body fat % not scale weight.0

Here's the thing, @libs3091, I just ran your stats from four years ago when you lost weight, 1 kgs a week. You said you were 51 kgs. You would have been 18 years old. According to scoobys online calculator, your TDEE was -- even if I was generous and gave you 1-3 hours a week of light exercise... 1700 calories. Which means that you were eating 700 calories to lose that amount of weight.
Even if I bump the calculator up to 3-5 hours of exercise, it gives you a TDEE of 1900 calories, meaning you were eating 900 calories.
I'm not even going to go into what your caloric intake would be had I done the sedentary calculation.
The bottom line? You have demonstrated dangerous caloric intake, and the evidence is in your first post.
Please, get some help.0 -
I do not see why everyone is bashing her. Theseforums have become so disapointing. You cannot post anything without getting reemed people accusing you of a eating disorder or not believe you. She asked a question that was simple. Maybe your diet was unbalanced and needed to be retuned. Maybe you need to lose at a slower rate. I don't think bc you are malnurished it = eating disorder! Or bc she doesn't accurately use her diary! For Petes sake! I was wondering same question as her bc I noticed some hair loss but I am in no way not eating! Another lady said her macros were off and that is what caused it and I think that is my problem my fat and protein maybe need upped or I need to eat back more exercise calories or something. I thought these forums were for support of eachother not to bash the poster!0

Read my last post, Angela. Based on her weight/height ratio, she was losing weight too aggressively. It's not bashing, it's concern.

Hi. I did all my conversions before saying anything. At 156cm you're 5'1" which is the same as me! 51kg is 8 stone which, for me would be absolutely in my dreams fabulous.
41kg is 6 stone 6lb which is incredibly low. Don't want to sound judgey and I know that there are many different body types but from my same-height perspective I don't think that weighing the same as my 8 year old step daughter would be healthy.
I'm currently 10 stone 2lb down from 11 stone 2lb (so 70kg to 64kg).
On the hair loss front, did you see your GP at the time about it? It does sound like it could well have been linked to your rapid weightloss and potential malnutrition. Was it all over hair thinning? I ask because I've had alopecia areata in the past - bald patches on the scalp about the size of 50p coins. I had tests to see if it was linked to a thyroid problem but in the end it turned out to be "just one of those things" and "bad luck" which has thankfully never bothered me again.
Start logging everything, check your macros to ensure you're getting the right levels of protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and iron.0 -

so you are saying that when someone says that they are losing hair that we should all just say "yea, great for you OP, you can do it and stop losing hair!!"
The answer to OP's questions is one of three:
1. she has BD
2. she has an eating disorder
3. she ate so little that she became malnourished and that is why her hair fell out.
I am sorry if you think that is negative but that is the truth.0 -

Concern <> bashing...and being malnourished has nothing to do with the amount of calories you consume.
Hair loss is a serious concern if you are trying to lose weight and you are losing hair...
So perhaps if you are losing hair you need to look at your intake and not be "malnourished"...and anyone who thinks they look chubby at 112lb which is 21 BMI does have some body image issues...
Pair that with admitting to aggressive calorie deficits to lose weight we have a right and a duty to express our concerns...
Support<>blind acceptance of bad/unhealthy weight loss techniques...and to be frank...
I will be damned if I ever let someone this young do this much damage to her body and not speak up.
So if you feel differently then perhaps you can be one of those that pat them on the head and say there there...the big meanies are gone now.0 -

First of all, she didn't get bashed. It wasn't just the hair loss that triggered the observations of disordered behavior. 500 calorie goal, upped to 800 ... both ridiculously low. Hiding the diary when its contents reveal details she'd rather not discuss although they tie directly to her question. An overly aggressive loss plan and too low of a goal weight. Deflection rather than taking ownership by the OP. Red flag after red flag that deserve calling out.

Ok. Well I did not realize her weight was that low. I am not saying to encourage a eating disorder. I do not. I believed her to be 5'0. Which100 lbs I not too thin for and calories of 1000 to 1200. In any event it is not even a diet she is currently on but years ago. I have no idea what her goal was to eat that low of calories either.
I apologize.0 -
How about not relying on a web forum for a diagnosis and go see a doctor? Hair loss can happen from malnutrition, but it could also be a sign of an underlying disease. Stop speculating and go get help.0

Hair loss is a known side effect of extreme weight loss and it is a risk factor in bariatric surgery. My diet was monitored after surgery and I was given a minimum target of protein to achieve. Within a week after surgery I was able to hit my protein targets and I did not experience hair loss. My fingernails are more brittle however.
Several of my compatriots have suffered hair loss after surgery.
So you might want to pay attention to your macros this time around.0 -

Probably because you are concerned that you will have the same resulting hair loss as you did then? You should look at what you did then so that you don't have the same negative side effects this time. It goes directly to your question.

you asked a question about losing hair 4 years ago...knew probably why you lost your hair but are afraid it will happen again this time...so therefore our thoughts are you are going to repeat what you did 4 years ago even though you knew it wasn't safe...
I mean come on...look at your original question...
I lost my hair here is why (unhealthy weight loss methods) I want to lose weight again but will my hair fall out?

I did get help 4 years ago but dermatologists/doctors can't really specify what exactly caused it... They just knew it was the weight loss (obviously, I was unhealthy). I was just hoping to open a discussion to see whether people have lost hair maybe not by losing weight rapidly (like me), but losing weight normally and it was their diet that caused the hair loss. Just as a reminder I have a full head of hair right now, it's not -still- happening0 -

Thank you for sticking up for me, no my calories aren't that low normally (500-800) as the person said. I said it before but I had influenza for a couple of weeks and couldn't eat more than that amount. That was the only thing in my diary so everyone has just decided to pick at that. Before that I was eating enough to gain weight, so I don't think I was starving myself hahaha. I don't know what's up with everyone here0
