    So a hunger strike for a month or more without medical supervision sounds like a good idea to you?

    It's an asinine concept. It is considered torture to make somebody do what you want to do to yourself. It is a recipe for lost lean mass, lost bone density, and damage to internal organs.

    I don't think the OP should do it, Clearly no one does... But OP's original statement is in the active sense.. as in "This is what I'm doing"... she never asks if she "should"... she's just a goin' for it... clearly her mind is made up.

    Living without eating Somewhere, I heard a simple adage about survival: The Three Threes:
    Three minutes without air.
    Three days without water.
    Three weeks without food.
    I figure 2 weeks in you will be experiencing some type of blackouts , disorientation , weakness even earlier , basically you will feel really ill , and then I heard that you would have to introduce food slowly into your system because you stomach shuts down. (not sure how true this is because i really never thought about it that much)
    Bad idea!
    the only fasting i would do is , on the first few days of my diet , i will wait until i am hungry to eat my first meal , sometimes its 8 hrs after i wake up , other times it can be 3 hrs..

    Good luck with the heart damage you'll gain from this. Not to mention all the other health problems. Please take everyone's advice and do this with a healthy calorie deficit and exercise. You'll be much happier and healthier in the long run.

    Before this thread gets locked, I'm going to drop this here again, because it's so important:

    Hey MFPers.

    With the rapid increase of new users there are many posts coming up asking for detox recommendations. I figured this would be a good time to provide some links explaining why you generally don't need to detox or cleanse.

    Your body is readily equipped to handle toxins and in the event it cannot, you're in far greater need of medical attention than you are of any particular beverage or liquid diet.

    For purposes of weight loss, you're essentially choosing to replace food with liquid calories (depending on the cleanse, but most fall under this category) resulting in what usually amounts to a VLCD. This isn't typically a good idea for a variety of reasons (mood, hunger signaling, skeletal muscle maintenance, performance) and moreover it represents yet another short-cut attempt rather than establishing proper habits.

    The intent of my post isn't to insult anyone who comes here with the misinformed belief that they should detox/cleanse. The purpose is to provide information to hopefully save someone the wasted time, money, and potential ill health effects, not to mention the likely weight regain.

    I happen to agree with this...

    She did say, she wanted to fast as long as she could.. Hopefully skipping the first few meals will turn her around..

    But......She wants to know of all of the successful people that have done this, how long and how much weight was lost... Not that she should not do it...

    SIGH... face in my hands moment...

    Ya cant live off of water alone for a month and hope a One A Day will make up for the lack of nutrition its getting. This idea idea is worst than anorexia...at least they eat roughly 500 calories a day. Your better off drinking lots of water and juicing through out the day so you can at least get the vital nutrients your body needs, there are plenty of pre-made juice blends you can buy.

    This thread won't last long, surely it'll be taken down any minute so hopefully op you read this quickly and realize that your plan is unhealthy and not necessary

    Fasting for spiritual reasons is one thing (Christians and Jews do it without harm, but it's usually for ONE day, e.g., Yom Kippur). Also, when I feel like I've eaten something bad or am not feeling well in the belly, I will fast from food but drink lots of water to flush out whatever is in there. Again, one day will suffice without ill effect; in fact, it feels great. Even the medical community will tell you this is safe (many doctors in my own family).

    But for weight loss, it's a bad idea. The most important reason that I think has not been mentioned here is this: You can't sustain it as a LIFESTYLE. You can't not eat for the rest of your life. What will you do after the fast? Go back to the habits that got you fat to begin with? You see how it doesn't make sense?

    If you're very overweight, you need to mentally deal with whatever is causing you to overeat. If you hate to exercise, you can deal with that too. I think this is a mental and habit issue. I hate the first 15 min or so of exercise then I enjoy it. Eventually, the longer I exercise as a daily habit, the more my body ends up craving exercise.
