What other form(s) of exercise would you choose to do instead?

Plyometrics and body weight exercises. Unless one was paralyzed, there shouldn't be a reason they still couldn't do some sort of resistance training. Old say "use it or lose it" applies with muscle.

I'm one who can't lift free weights due to medical limitations. I use weight machines at the gym, I lift small weights with my back on an exercise mat at home, and do resistance based cardio. There's always a way.

I did a triathlon yesterday, so I would probably still be doing running/swimming/biking for cardio. But before I lifted weights, I was doing this body weight fitness routine for strength training: https://fitloop.co/routines/bwf-recommended-beginner-routine. I bought a little power tower for dips and pull ups and stuff. So if every gym in my area exploded or something, I would probably go back to that for strength training.

Does curling into a ball and crying count as exercise? I’d do some form of bodyweight exercises, I guess. But I’d be really really sad.

More body weight and resistance band work, something along the lines of this: bretcontreras.com/band-glute-exercises-for-the-win-erin-mccombs-intriguing-training-methods/

Had a quick skim at the site - looks pretty good at first glance - thanks for the link.

I guess that would depend on the reason for the lifting ban but ideally I'd go back to using the cable machine stuff I was doing before I discovered the barbell. Failing that, I guess resistance band work.

I can't imagine. I see a lot of elderly people at the gym lifting--people in their 70's and 80's.

I can't lift free weights anymore, but luckily I am able to use a good chunk of the machines. If I couldn't even use the machines, I imagine that other activities I like would be out of the running, too... so maybe aqua aerobics? Modified yoga?

I took a resistance bands class that was so much harder than I thought it would be! I'd probably try that again.

I do a mix of high-rep bodyweight exercises, some (carefully selected) machine exercises, and things with resistance bands. I also try to include as much resistance as makes sense into my machine cardio. That isn't all that much, because I strive to do something every day and so am watching for recovery.

I haven't gotten as far into the bands as this person has, but check it out

Aha sorry you already offered that link! Amazing, what she did!

But OP - it really depends on why you can't lift weights. If you're working around a bum shoulder, that's different than if you have a hernia or something.

I'd probably switch to body weight stuff. Maybe try resistance bands.
