You mite want to check into a Paleo Diet and not eat all those carbs. The diet our bodies were designed to eat...caveman style! It's not a diet it's a life style change! Watch the Doc. The Perfect Human Diet
If we were design to eat wheat, grains, breads, cerals and many other carbs we'd have two stomachs like a cow!!

And you realize that cows' natural diet consists of grasses, so when you feed them a steady diet of grains they tend to get sick and need antibiotics?

Edited to make the quote show up that I was responding to.

Well...how many calories of this Uncle Toby are you eating, and what kind of deficit does it put you in?

Just the satchets on their own, I'm curious what people thought as they seem to fill me up and would be low in fat..

I don't see a dietitian, I see a nutritionist and she hasn't told me anything my trainer hasn't. Should of saved the money on the office visit.

Yeah that happens I also saw dieticians at physio prior to operation I got given a food pyramid chart and just told to eat of each group .. Could not stick to it as do disability support work and not home much.. I was buying lots of takeaway even up to operation from working shift work long 8hrs stints and not having access to healthy meals.. It's a difficult enough industry to work in and you are always out ice just had operation and determined to change....as

how filling something is and how much fat it is isn't really relevant - if you eat any food in a deficit you'll lose weight, gain if you're in surplus.

just eating oats would leave you pretty deficient in many things. just like just eating chicken breast would, or just eating fruit, or just eating nuts.

OP - since we are playing riddles..here is one.

what would happen if we all ate in a 500 per day calorie deficit and hit micros/macros?

I'd be like 128 by next month and feeling great.

Me too! Now if only I could / would just do it!!

Looks like everybody has taken great care to go off topic.... There is some actual valid detail in the OPs question. I started on Uncle Toby's just this week and after looking at the detail on the box, I asked the same question in my head - can it be true that this food is awesome enough to eat as part of three meals, daily? There's many ways to make UncleToby's, I'm not interested in eating it bland or cooked straight from the packet, but it is acceptable and possible to eat it with any kind of fruit, even raisins etc. And to the haters - please check out the nutritional content of the product in question before going off about 'deficiency in this' and 'wasting away that'.

    http://www.uncletobys.com.au/product_detail/uncle-tobys-traditional-oats-1kg/

    Serving size 40g.

Ingredients: 100% UNCLE TOBYS Wholegrain Rolled Oats

I usually take 60-80gm of the product and 60-80gm of fruit and bring to the boil in 2 cups of water, then smoosh it all together to make porridge type consistency. No sugar added, no milk added. Tastes good, keeps me full until lunch, has goodness in it. The product is dried rolled oats, so it can be used to make things like energy bars and other bread or cake products.

Great question, all the haters - get over yourself.

Thanks for your reply as I do add low fat milk or honey or half banana, it fills me up too that's why I queried people's thoughts.. I was googling and also found it's what a lot of Jenny Craig users eat (not that I'm a Jenny Craig fan due to high costs involved )
But thought that was interesting and saw people on JC commenting saying their weight was dropping off using the oats.
Thanks again for your support.. I probs wouldn't eat it every day but thought if it was main diet it may help...
I been eating every day for breaky after my ACL/Meniscus operation 10 days ago and dropped 3.6kgs already even though I'm on my back 24/7 recovering in full leg splint.. I no longer drink wine or am not having take away, have also been less hungry... I have lamb curry and boiled rice lunch and dinner is small yoghurt... I can't believe this weight flying off me as I have always struggled to lose it even eating well and exercising a lot I never lost weight this quick.. Can't explain it...
Meds may have had effect but morphine finished 2days after surgery and I'm day 10 after operation of bring at home... Really keen to exercise even trying to do sit ups in recliner with full leg splint on..

youre losing weight because you're in a caloric deficit, not because you're eating oats. a small yoghurt for dinner sounds pretty depressing imo. where are your vegetables?

Yeah yogurt is a little hard to have every night but I have Acid Reflux issues too and some bathroom issues from painkillers so needed the yoghurt for digestion reasons...
I do have sweet potato with the curry lamb in recipe hubby makes.. I have thought of having cut up carrot sticks and raw beans or steamed ones for a meal ..

Is this an ads? I think you work for Uncle Toby's Oats

Lol, no I don't work for Uncle Toby's .. Funny... I'm a disability support worker actually and posted as I just had an ACL/meniscus operation and have been lying on my back 24/7 for past 10 days with leg in full splint... I been having the Uncle Toby's oats sachets for breaky every day lunch hubby makes me a lamb curry with rice and dinner I am either not hungry from being on morphine and Meds to kill pain or just have a small yoghurt.. I've dropped nearly 4 kilos even though I'm just lying on my back in pain so could not believe me weight loss drop so quick... When I do my disability support work I work with Profoundly Autistic people who are extremely food focused so I used to get takeaway and shove it down on way to client in between split shifts.. I thought maybe the oats could be a quick easy option as I'm on huge time constraints and work away from home a lot also out in the community assisting disadvantaged people and taking them to cheap places where they can afford of their choice (McDonalds is chosen a lot or similar places) I do get overnight access to a fridge and kitchen but all food must be removed before next persons shift.. It's difficult to eat with Autistic clients around as they grab your food off you..

Thanks for your replies Alyssa :)
Time restraints when I go back to work as a disability support worker is one reason I'm asking as I work with profoundly Autistic clients who are food focused and like a 2 yr old in adult body, so to prepare a meal here is quite dangerous as client could burn themselves or tip food all over floor 2 yr old behaviour mind.. There is a microwave there so thought of time management and it's low in fat and fills me up.. May prevent me deterring off when driving past takeaway shops in between clients doing shift work .. I work very hard doing nights weekends and days many hours assisting disadvantaged in the community...
I just had ACL/Meniscus operation and have been lying on my back 24/7 for past 10 days...I also lost nearly 4 kilos just eating uncle Toby's oats sachets we had in pantry, sometimes plain or adding 1/2 banana and low fat milk..or little honey..that's breaky, then lunch was lamb curry with boiled rice and sweet potato, lunch small yoghurt as have acid reflux and small current bathroom issues from morphine Meds from recent operation..I was very curious as the oats are filling and I don't mind them they also seem low in fat... So a few reasons I posted it's also I'm not as hungry after operation and Meds and was a big eater and lots of takeaway and a wine every few night to relieve stress from disability work..

There are only so many ways to cook oatmeal, and I think most people would get sick of it pretty quickly regardless of how creative they are.

Wait a minute, that can't be the only reason you think this idea is lightweight?

I'm sure there are people out there who are too busy, like me, to care about the taste of food at all and are only interested in 'filling up the tank'. I hear you say it will get boring, trust me, I also eat bread everyday and it never gets old, certainly not in the last few decades.

This is a great source of protein and fibre and makes a great base to mix in a variety of other foods, like nuts, seeds, dried and fresh fruits. As I said, not straight out the packet plain, but as good quality fill. And, it's ridiculously cheap, about $4/kg (or about 20-25 servings).

Not a lot of people can stick to a bland diet in which food serves no other purpose other than just fuel.

Many people like to enjoy their food, be it with friends/family, at holiday gatherings, while traveling, or for many other reasons. It's not that they're less "busy" than you, it's just that food is a part of life and a pleasurable part at that.

You can view food as more than just "fuel" and be healthy and happy. There is no reason to force yourself to eat the same thing day in and day out for the sake of weight loss.

you keep mentioning low fat. you do realise you need fat to function, and to be healthy? many people find fat filling too (Along with protein and fiber), as it slows digestion. fat doesn't make you fat.

Lots of people eat the same things for breakfast with minor modifications. When you are ready to move on to something else, you will know.
    You seriously need enough fat:

Yeah a little fat would not hurt but I'm trying to avoid anything processed like sausages or salami etc.. I'm just out of Hospitial for ACL/meniscus operation and really hungry either, when usually I'm a huge eater eating a lot of take away due to travel and doing disability shift work.. I posted the thread as have been having the oats satchets for breaky and lost nearly 4kgs with it every day and having lamb curry with boiled rice lunch and (the lamb should have enough fat and protein to help me heal)
I'm just surprised the weight is falling off in a short time as I'm in a full leg splint recovering from surgery... I've heard the morphine painkillers etc can also make you lose appetite?

since when does fat need to come from processed food?

butter, coconut oil, extra virgin olive oils, nut/seeds and nut butters, avocado, oily fish, fattier meats, full fat dairy, whole eggs. all great places to find healthy fats.

you are eating in a massive deficit, hence the weight loss. it has nothing to do with the type of food you're eating. you should be trying to eat a nutrient dense diet to assist with recovery if you've just had an operation. the fat and protein in lamb from one meal would be minimal, unless you're eating half a sheep.

You didn't lose the weight 'with the oats', you lost the weight due to being in a big calorie deficit. A bunch of it will be water and muscle weight since you're completely sedentary and eating at a big deficit with what sounds like fairly low protein overall. Recovery from a major operation isn't really the best time to put the additional stress of a considerable calorie deficit on your body as well. Your recovery could probably benefit from eating closer to maintenance and from getting veggies, fruits, more protein and more fat. Aren't you getting physiotherapy? Muscle loss can be massive in situations like that.

It's because you're in a calorie deficit. not because of oats.

Plus...why on earth would you not want to eat ALL THE FOOD? Food is delicious.

(not implying oats aren't food...but they're not all the food).

Watch the Documentary The Perfect Human Diet! Yes it's been over 10k years since we ate properly

And yet think of all the super cool things we've created in those 10,000 years! Seems like humans are doing okay.
Ask a Cardiologist what they think of the diet.

Most cardiologists aren't that into paleo. Indeed, I seriously doubt there's a huge anti-oats contingent of cardiologists, but whatever.

    Right?

And OP, I did silly things like this when I was in my teens and early 20s, it's a hypothetical question because you're not going to make it to day three.

Eh, last time I was sick I ate basically oatmeal for 3 days. It was perfect. (However, Bob's Red Mill is my favorite. Bob can kick Uncle Toby's you know what. Of course, I haven't actually tried Uncle Toby's, but I'm feeling belligerent.)

Of course then I got better and started wanting to eat normally again.

Does not seem to make up a balanced diet and most people need variety (also low fat is not necessarily good).

Why eat only one thing? I don't get that.
