Has Myfitnesspal advertised fattening food to you?

(Which all listed above would cause me to binge and overeat)

I could probably eat two of those and if I take one bite, I will want to.

You can't blame food adverts for your lack of control forever. It can be difficult, but take responsibility for your actions.

I am on this site to attempt to take responsibility for my actions. I think counting calories and struggling daily to not eat poorly is good enough for me.

That's the attitude...eat half and save the rest for another day. :)

If that half was sitting in my fridge, I would be mindlessly down at the fridge in the middle of the night stuffing my face while half awake. The sandwich would be calling me through the walls until I answer.

That's my point though. If it's not ads here, it's a billboard or TV commercial. Personal responsibility-taking control- is still key.

Seriously. This is the view out my front door. I see it every day. I've lived here 17 years. I bought donuts there three times. And I frickin' love donuts.

I don't think it should be an issue. You are going to be exposed to tempting food throughout life, so trying to make MFP a special cocoon where we are protected from photos of food doesn't really seem practical.

It's also likely not possible given how the ads work--as mentioned above, that ad is for travel, really.

This. If an ad on MFP is all it takes to derail someone than IMO that is the problem, not the ad with food in it.

Spend a half hour watching TV and count how many ads are for yummy delicious food.

Yes. OP are you currently seeing a doctor for Binge Eating Disorder? Because if seeing a picture of a sandwich is enough to trigger a binge for you then it sounds like you have bigger problems than a lack of understanding how internet ads work....

Yes, binging is a much more important topic than knowing how Google ads work on Myfitnesspal. How clever and observant. ;)

Right. And if you are so easily triggered that ads on MFP set you off, then perhaps you need to speak with your doctor about this if you have clinically been diagnosed with BED.

Or were you speaking of binge and instead meant that you were tempted to eat foods that you felt you shouldn't eat, for whatever reason, because you have labelled them "fattening"?

I think also on threads you participate in (maybe ones you just read??). I've got an ad for gastric bypass surgery. I possibly searched for a related term once. Obviously the algorithm doesn't care why i did, but it's not like i spend hours on websites about WLS. Though I do search for stuff about food generally.

Sometimes all it takes is keyword "food". :D

ETA: My feed knows me. It's currently serving up ads for coffee and beer.

I get adult diapers and clothing. Still haven't figured out what I search that makes me think I pee myself but the clothes are spot on.

OP, I actually never get ads for food really.

The depends ad are seriously an MFP thing, not tracker ad. I get them too, and only on this site.

No food is "fattening" unless it causes you to go over your maintenance calories.

I don't label food as "fattening." No food is that unless you overeat or otherwise don't make it fit into your plan. Yesterday I ate a hamburger and French fries. I made it fit and enjoyed every bite.

Some foods are triggers that cause over eating. Anything fried, fatty and with bread...I will overeat and dream about them after if I happen to taste it. Seeing pics doesn't help either.
Maybe it's not realistic that your dietary idiosyncrasies play much of a factor in which ads get served, though.

Expecting the Earth to spin on its axis in such a way as to not offend one's own sensibilities is rarely a productive enterprise, right?

For people triggered by pictured, it's a lesson worth learning. I understand wanting a haven, but my goodness, you walk out your door or turn on the television or pick up a magazine in the doctor's waiting room and are assaulted by ads and aromas. We have to learn to deal. It's all part of learning to handle food.

Alternatively, people doing elimination diets for things like IBS and other food problems have need of a food logging site.
It also could just be a matter of buying blocks through a reseller that happens to have some of its blocks in an even more depends friendly site, and the spill over buys make it here.
Either way, someone's getting screwed on their KPI flashing it at me.

^Agreed. Completely denying myself certain foods only made me want them more. And if I did eat it (even if it was a smaller portion or/and fit into my daily goals), I'd still end up binging because I'd feel like I had failed anyways. A more positive approach has been a lot more helpful in keeping me on track.

If you have trouble not overeating certain foods right now, then I can see not having them in the house for awhile until you are ready to reintroduce small portions into your diet. But in the end, you'll have to figure out whether you are never ever going to eat certain foods or push yourself to work on control/willpower (which you may not have right now, but as the saying goes - practice makes perfect).

But deeming a fish burger unhealthy or fattening really seems odd, in my opinion. Combining breaded fish, bread, and some toppings doesn't make it fattening. It's a bit laughable as the ingredients by themselves probably get touted as "healthy". You could always do a lower calorie homemade approach to it or leave out certain items...or as someone else mentioned, eat half one day and half another. Food is food. Once you accept it, it's easier to handle overall and not get stressed about it.

This is especially true if seeing pictures of certain foods is going to cause you to binge or stress about binging.

TV has all kinds of commercials

If I'm ever feeling "not so fresh" I know just the product for that

But I'm not overly swayed by commercials

Actually this is over 500 cals...
Ketchup and mayo alone are approx 150
Lettus tomato would be 10 cal each so about 620 cal depending on brands used as each is different BEFORE accounting for how the fish was cooked ie: fried in oil or broiled in oven. Also note that many spices above 1/2 tsp have calories (2-5).
It's very important to count all those factors. This sandwich could easily be pushing the 800-900 mark!

@sammi5545 what on earth? My assumption was your objective is to make a lower calorie alternative so you measure and prepare appropriately

The "/" was to denote options

Who on earth uses 150 cals of ketchup?
    1tbsp ketchup = 19 cals
or 1 tbsp light mayonnaise = 36 cals and there's extra light

    Who fries fish fingers? Bleurgh

25g lettuce = 4 calories and I can't be bothered with the other veg

Well, the way I see it, a sandwich is just a....sandwich--it has no brain to think and no mouth to call out, therefore the only control it has over you is the control you give it.

You are an adult and have 100% control over how much you choose to eat. :)

These threads give me life. But if you're unwilling/unable to take responsibility for allowing advertising to get inside your head, why allow that trigger in the first place? You need to install an ad blocker. I don't watch the Food Network or look at cooking websites at night because it's a trigger. Should I demand that they switch to showing pro wrestling and take their site offline between those hours?

Ad blocker all the way. It has improved my overall browsing experience.

Yup! In fact, I once logged an ice kreem (misspelled in an attempt to trick the ads, lol) treat and began getting ads for it immediately. They continued for months.

I had to resist the urge to give in so much that when I see those things now, my Pavlovian response is to resist them. So, in the end, the ads benefitted me. :)

It's a lot more complicated than that.

Yes, MFP could prevent them, with virtually zero effort - but why would they? The MFP community is the perfect target audience for those kinds of foods.
