    I will say two things:

    1. Brown better than white
    2. HOWEVER - if you're sticking to your macros, you will do fine even with white rice. I mean, keep a daily carb goal of x grams. (an ideal goal is 40:30:30 i.e 40% carb, 30% proteins and 30% fats - but for us Asians, it is way too difficult. Especially the Indians. I too am an Indian and struggle like you to reduce rice or overall carb intake). My current carb goal is 138 gms based on my daily calorie goal which is 40%. I dont always meet this goal, but knowing my goal and recording my food keeps me in check at least. I dont usually exceed beyond a point. And I eat any type of carb within that goal. Having said that, I must admit that I dont eat rice daily nowadays, which I was used to eating. But I do eat it 3-4 times a week, once during the day. I think after I started controlling carb intake and filling that calorie gap with proteins+fats, I have seen good results. Especially the muscle build-up within last 3 weeks. Thats fastest I've ever seen muscle definition in my attempts....

Its a tough sell trying to convince anyone from the Asian continent that rice is bad for them. There have also been some studies that have shown genetic adaptations in the way certain races process carbohydrates like rice, which is consumed as a staple food for generations by billions.

I think it comes down to each individual and how their body reacts to certain foods. Moderation with all foods is common sense.

brown rice is better for you than whit e rice

Do you go out of your way to be wrong with everything you say?

If you have had adequate fibre for the day how is brown rice better?

Can't be bothered know but there was a study done that actually showed white rice was better for a post workout meal for maximum uscle protein synthesis. The additional fibre in brown rice meant that the amount exreted was larger and hence less protein was absorbed. Yep, there's your TMI post for the day

  • I love rice but I can not control myself to eat small portions so I stay away from rice completely. If you can have small portions I believe it is okay.

I eat a lot of brown rice and have had no problem losing weight so far. I also eat white rice occasionally if I'm craving it, but I prefer the taste of brown so usually go to that.

it's really energy dense? That doesn't help with losing fat...I'd rather eat more flavoursome stuff than...rice. But when I do, it's only red rice or brown rice

Rice is a major component for thai and vietnamese cooking, >.< I MUST have it.

Too much of anything can be bad for you. Although rice is good, i think of it more as a filler than any real nutrition. I still eat it in most dishes but reduce the portion sizes. Portion control is always important. I find if i eat too much rice products (rice, noodles, etc) I feel sluggish from it. It might be from my blood sugar spiking after a meal, but i didn't like it so ate less of it.
  • Sure, as long as you keep track of how much of it you eat. And it's brown rice, like you said. Have you ever tried Israeli Couscous? best stuff ever!

My two favorite types of rice are the Thai jasmine rice, and the Japanese shorter tubbier sushi rice.

Hi. I'm a South Indian. I used to have white rice twice a day, sometimes thrice too, but still managed to be super slim. 4 yrs back, I landed up with a sedentary job and started gaining weight. Then I said goodbye to rice and hello to whole wheat roti. But that didn't help me lose weight. Only exercise did. I think having rice daily shouldn't be a problem if you are regular with your exercise and maintaining a deficit.

I love rice and see no reason why you can't and won't be successful losing weight eating rice.

People demonize pasta, too, but I have pasta nearly everyday of my life, sometimes more than once a day, and am consistently losing weight at a healthy pace. I'm almost at my goal body fat % and weight. I'm working on the last 10 pounds now and then I will be under 20% body fat.

So, yay for pasta and rice!

Bottomline - Rice is not bad. Over consumption is.
ain't that the truth about most foods!

To the OP - do what works for you. Rice is a carb, so if you want to cut BACK (not out) you can do that - say have rice at one meal a day. Every ethnic /traditional diet will have some sort of carb in it, be it rice, or pasta, or bread, or potato, or cornmeal... I notice - FOR ME - that cutting back on carbs works, so i try to have it once a day. You may not need to cut that much, but do pay attention to portion SIZE.

Oh and brown basmatti rice, or Tilda rice, are amazing delicious! I used to think "rice, boring but necessary background for certain dishes" but with the brown basmati or tilda - it's YUM!

    White rice is nutritionally bankrupt,
What a silly thing to say. White rice still has a nutritional value it's a carb for one so provides energy. Yes it's missing things like thiamine in comparison to brown rice. But as with most things in moderation as part of a balanced diet is perfectly fine. I eat brown rice but also enjoy white rice on occasion. This culture of denial and accusation when people eat things not perceived as the healthy option is part of the reason for the health problems of the western cultures.

I saw a shop the other day advertising brown rice Sushi (in Australia). Can't say I've ever seen that in Japan! But I suppose so many people still believe in GI for it's satiety and weight loss purposes in Australia.

you can get it here in NZ too.... in Japan brown rice is available sometimes, but in like hippy organic vegan type places and most Japanese people think it's a bit strange when rice is brown. They do have it...just not in sushi!

Eat it. It doesn't matter. Brown. White. There are some very smart people who say that brown rice is actually not as good for you as white. At the end of the day, it's about total intake. If the rest of your diet is nutritious it doesn't matter. Bruce lee sure didn't care.

lol! People and their misunderstanding of food. And if you say "you only eat two sources of carbs" you're missing the point of this whole tracking thing and you pass up the opportunity for more nutritious sources of food. But oh well.

All this nonsense came from eating fads like Paleo and other bullspit trying to sell you a book or blog or special weight loss formula. Just another distraction and confusion. If you stay confused, you can be sold some more dumb shhhh
