OP You are feeling what a lot of us have felt regarding going to the gym in the beginning. It's way worse inside your head than it is in reality. You'll probably find you'll really enjoy it and after a while you'll want to go more and more. I would suggest a gym buddy, it makes a world of difference having a friend with you, you will be a lot more relaxed having someone to chat to and it will stop you focussing on others.

I've never met anyone at my gym that is concerned with anyone else. I myself don't even noticed other people there, I'm too busy sweating from my eyeballs to see them lol. If I do notice anyone else my thought process for all of a split second would go like this ...

I see the overweight person sweating their *kitten* off on the exercise bike..... Slimming down a bit, getting in shape, good on you, respect.
I see the underweight person shaking on the weight machines..... Bulking up a bit, getting in shape, good on you, respect.
I see the already in shape people doing their thing..... Wow you've been at this a while, you're in good shape, good on you, respect.

I think anyone who is in a gym understands that getting your health in order takes time and hard work. Nobody will look down on you and judge you for that.

I hope you give it a try, it's more fun than you may think and you get a great sense of achievement after a good gym session.

I stare back until they look away ;) Usually the people staring are in between sets and really...you only have your phone, the wall, or other people to look at. Some people are just people watchers and they are not judging you, only looking - still uncomfortable, I know.

I have caught myself staring at people once or twice completely by accident on my part. Sometimes I'm just staring off into space thinking about what to make for dinner. Then I realize that space is another person who I probably just made uncomfortable lol.

OP-most people at the gym do not care about you or what you look like. They are focused on themselves. Even if they did care enough to look, you are there for you,it doesn't matter what strangers think.
