Will the rising cost of eggs affect you?

I was just notified that our area grocery store will double the cost of eggs next week which would make them roughly $4.00+/dozen. I currently go through 1 large carton of egg whites and about 1 dozen eggs each week.

I looooove my eggs. I spend about $10/week now in eggs so an increase will certainly make me second guess buying eggs! I might need to toss something else off my list to make up for the price or not have them everyday

In the meantime I'm going to stock up and freeze some!

No. I get my eggs for free (or $3/carton during her busy season) from a co-worker who can't keep up with her hens egg laying.

Eggs have been $4/doz large in the big bame grocery stores here for quite some time. I buy them at Grocery Outlet (bargain market) now and paid $4.59 for 18 medium sized. I did notice that it had gone up about $1 in the last month or so though.

I raise chickens & ducks, so I am good. I know that the costs have hit others hard, but I haven't raised costs, eggs remain $2/dozen. And I have the added security of knowing that they are free range and full organic diet!

And THAT is why I live where I do. I hate HOAs. I also don't like chickens, but that's another story...

Nope, I get 3 to 4 eggs a day from my hens....

...apparently I am a little out of the loop. Why exactly are egg prices doubling??

I believe there is an avian flu wiping out the chickens, but don't quote me on that.

No, my friend and I have chickens at her house so I just get some each week from our chickens.

I second that! Plus don't they keep bugs away because they eat them? Or am I making that up? Lol

Without a doubt. I live in southeastern NC where it feels like summer 9 1/2 months out of the year. Even with a creek right behind my yard, I have had very very few mosquitos and other bugs since getting chickens.

This, plus a law was passed in CA last year that anyone who wants to sell eggs there had to provide a specific type of housing for the chickens. So many national producers are having to invest in alot of new infrastructure if they want to sell into CA, which is a pretty big market

IF you can find a local producer who has not been hit by the avian flu and who is not raising their prices right now just because the national market says they can, you may find a bargain (and get some really fresh eggs to boot).
