    You can always raise chickens.

    No you can't

    And why is that?

There are several reasons why one could not raise chickens.

I think we're all aware we could feasibly raise chickens and it would be a moot point but would you have that same logic if beef and turkey prices were rising too?

I am just trying to not rely heavily on egg protein as a result of increasing prices. <period.

Nope, I get 3 to 4 eggs a day from my hens....

...apparently I am a little out of the loop. Why exactly are egg prices doubling??

Because in order to sell eggs in California, egg-laying chickens are now "legally entitled to at least 116 square inches of floor space" - almost double the industry standard in the US.

    http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2014/12/29/373802858/how-californias-new-rules-are-scrambling-the-egg-industry

...Proposition 2, as it's called, required eggs in California to come from chickens that have enough room to fully extend their limbs and turn around freely. It was a direct challenge to the egg industry, because most egg-laying chickens can't do that in standard henhouses, where they live in small cages, five or 10 birds to a cage.

    Wish I could. Darn HOA's!

Ya, I heard about lots of restrictive HOAs when I lived in South Florida. I'm back in Massachusetts now, in a semi-rural area, and many towns in my county have passed Right to Farm bylaws, which suits me a lot better.

    http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/rural-neighbors-right-farm-29869.html

...North Carolina's law is typical. It declares that an agricultural operation which has existed for a year without being a nuisance is presumed not to be a nuisance even when new neighbors move in. If the farm operations are conducted in a reasonable manner, the new neighbors can't legally complain.

    http://ediblesouthshore.com/online-magazine/summer-2011/right-to-farm/

...Priscilla McGilvray, who was formerly the animal control officer for Marshfield, was a member of the Marshfield AgCom when their RTF Bylaw was passed and was one of the original proponents of its passage. She views the AgCom as integral to resolving any potential disputes between neighbors and farmers. If people complain about neighbors with chickens or horses, they can be informed that Marshfield is a right to farm community and that the townspeople voted for the bylaw at town meeting.

Wow, that is a big increase. What state do you live in?... or should I ask what part of the U.S (if in US) do you live in?

I either get my eggs from Costco or from a lady in our neighborhood when she has too many. I haven't noticed any kind of crazy price increase at Costco.

Our prices have been higher here due to shortages cause by Avian Flu. I hope it's a transient thing. I have hard a hard time getting my egg whites from Costco.

We get free-range eggs from a nearby farm once a week and their prices haven't gone up at all.

I live in a very farm heavy area that has a lot of chicken farms and the city has denied a petition for backyard chickens. I'd love to have a small coop, but they're afraid of avian flu spreading g to the farms. In vancouver about an hour awY they're allowed backyard chickens...must be nice to have chickens in the city while we can't in the country hahha

Two of the back yard egg farmers from whom I get my eggs have capitalized on the nationwide price increases to raise their prices as well >.<

  • Yes it does I eat eggs like crazy.
I regret not doing my quail this year.
But egg prices have dropped almost back to normal price again by me
    which is good
