Are there certain machines at the gym to avoid for weight loss?

I know you can't spot reduce, but i've finally gotten into the habit of working out, and normally use the treadmill, elliptical, do weights for arms and legs, and ab workouts. My calves are really big, I used to play soccer, and an employee at the gym said the stair master, and walking on incline will make them bigger. I want to lose weight everywhere, and along with eating well, which machines do you recommend, and not recommend? Thanks
