I had a good idea it was The Staple Singers, but had to do a little research for the song. Duh.

I'll take a short timeout and see if someone else knows it off the top of their head.

Took me a few minutes of investigation, but I figured it out too.

Long ago in college, my roommate and I listened to a lot of Dan Fogelberg. Then he heard someplace that if you were a Fogelberg fan, you might like this artist. So, we bought an album (you know, LP). Neither of us cared for it much at the time.

I better listen again. Amazon Prime has free streaming of some a few albums.

After listening to some clips of a few songs, I think he sings a bit like Bob Dylan. Does anyone else agree?

Agreed - Coincidentally, Dylan and the artist in question are 2 of my favorite lyricists of all time although their song structures differ (in my opinion). If you’re like me and appreciate lyrics over all else in a song, I’ll post the recommended album after someone posts the answer...
