    His hits ran from '75 to '84, for the last one I remember.

    Correct -- (J - 1) is "I".
    Wrong -- love -- (left * -1) Opposite of left is a homonym for this word.
    Wrong -- Music is very close to the four letter word I'm looking for here.

    As a hint, the composer of didn't sing it. The singer did not write this song.
