I have an Oster brand blender that I purchased for less than $30. It does an excellent job making smoothies. I also have a food processor because I made my own baby food. I use that for soups that get blended, like butternut squash bisque. I have eyed up the more expensive blenders but really, I don't think I need them for how eat and make food. I've had my Oster for about 18 months and my food processor for almost 8 years.
Do I think people *need* expensive blenders? Nah. I think they are really convenient. If someone wants to put down a decent amount of cash for something that enhances her life I totally get it. There are probably things that I purchase that cost more but I enjoy just because it's my preferences or suits my lifestyle better.
To the poster with the hair conditioner recipe...do you have a link for the recipe? I'm super interested!0 -

I have a $30 GE. It's garbage. Anything frozen that I put in there just gets caught in the blades and it makes this horrible dying moose sound, so I have to turn it off and push things around to get it going again.
Then a piece that attaches to the bottom, the seal broke, so when I made a smoothie the other week, as soon as i turned it on, smoothie came pouring out the bottom, all over everything, down my cabinet doors and all in my silverware drawer. I super-glued it and it happened again, so now it's all hot-glue-gunned up, which has sealed it up so it doesn't leak again. It's kind of working, but i have to surround the base with a towel. It's a mess.
TLDR; Don't buy a GE blender. And--I need a new blender.0 -

I feel sad when I see people blending crap up and juicing for no reason. I have patients that would kill to be able to eat again. They would give their left arm to enjoy something solid.
For the rest of us it's nice to have a variety of textures in our diet. Some pureed, some not.

Yah, that's more or less what I meant. I do love a good smoothie every now and then, but not a liquid diet.0 -
