I'm doing low carb-usually under 50-60g a day. I'm wondering how many grams of fat j should be eating with that?

Also I can't seem to eat more that 1200 cals, but I burn 500-1000 at the gym..will I really go into starvation mode? A dietitian told me as long as I ate 1200 I was fine, and if I ate more like 1600 I wouldn't lose anything

Thank you!!

I doubt you're burning that many at the gym. You would easily be losing weight if you included you're bmr and tdee on 1200 cals a day. Don't starve yourself. Weight loss takes time and needs patience. Low carb diets are necessary either, just an overall caloric deficit is needed.

@ttw1211 I started this Way Of Eating a year ago but in my case I eat 2600 to 3000 depending where I am trying to lose weight or just maintain. I eat 200 - 250 grams of fat daily. As long as this WOE manages my pain level well as it has done after the first 30 days I am cool but I have lost 30 pounds this last year.

Welcome to MFP forums. In time you will find your own WOE that will work for you long term. Best of success.

About 80-100 grams of fat per day is typical.

84 grams fat/day for you. Btw- You are not burning 500-1000 calories at the gym. Half that....maybe.......

That's what my polar is telling me. But that's fine bc then I won't go into starvation mode. But I do 2 classes a night sometimes (2 hours) so that's when I burn 1000. Who knows

Just a word of warning if you're planning on experimenting with higher fat, lower carbohydrate eating. If you have gallbladder disease (and you might not know if you do), eating more fat, especially animal fat, will make you symptomatic. If you already have mild gallbladder disease symptoms, eating animal fats in higher amounts will make it much worse. I had to learn that the hard way. Gallbladder disease is very common, especially amongst women aged 40 and over who carry extra weight. More and more younger women are being diagnosed with gallbladder disease too. If you feel nauseous or stomach achey when eating a high fat diet - pay attention.

I'm 28. But the fat I eat is from sunflower seeds and stuff. But thank you!

I'm going by my polar. I do 2 classes a night sometimes so I'm working out hard for 2 hours straight. Who knows. But I'd prefer not to burn that much bc then I don't have to eat more.
And I never said I was starving myself. I'm just not hungry. If I was more hungry I would eat more..that's why I asked this question about going into starvation mode. But thank you.

What do you base that on? I can burn over 500 in 45 minutes of running, and she is much younger than I am. If she is doing a lot of cardio, she definitely can be burning that much.

I'm keeping my carbs under 50 a day now. My fat target is set at 75 grams, but I do go over that a lot of the time..it is usually in the 65-100 range. The idea is to pick your carb level (in your case 50-60 grams), then eat the appropriate amount of protein. The rest of your calories should be fat.

THANK YOU!! People just want to assume. Sometimes I do 2 hours of cardio which equals 1000 calories.
And thank you for your response. I eat about 120g of protein and I think around 70-80g of fat. And since I eat a lot of protein I'm just not hungry to eat more calories.

    • wants to avoid starvation
    • doesn't want to burn too much so she does *not* have to eat as much

I forgot, a dietician said 1200 is fine but 1600 you wouldn't lose weight. So, just for the heck of it, what is your weight? If you selected maintenance for a goal by MFP what your daily calorie allotment be?

Go to this website and they figure it out for you, BTW, you will lose quicker if you bring your carbs down to 20 g. per day. http://keto-calculator.ankerl.com/ They also have an awesome keto website.

1200 calories may be a bit low for your activity level unless you are quite small. I would consider upping your fat above that 84g limit.

I've been vLCHF for a few months. I am 5'8" and started close to 190. I ate about 1500 calories per day and I was inactive, maybe walking an hour a week. My macros are set at about 20g C, 85g P, and about 110g F. On that I was losing a good 2lbs per week. It has now slowed to about 1lb per week, but I am down to 156lbs and only want to lose another 10-15.

You are much more active than I, which is why I thought your calories seemed a bit low.

    Best wishes.

Our macros are pretty similar. My protein target is 118, though I am often closer to 100. The protein really does help keep you full. Sounds like you found a mix that works well for you.

Yea..I hope so. I did lose some weight but then I had a girls weekend with too much fun and I gained it back lol. I just wanted to double check about the fat. Seems weird to eat fat when I need to lose fat. Weird how this stuff works

Wow!! Congrats on your weight loss!! That's amazing! :)
Yea I need to try and up my calories but the protein really fills me up. I don't consider myself small at all 5'4..145lbs. But everyone is different so I guess I will find out through trial and error. Thank you for your help!

Also, you may want to check out the low carb group here: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/394-low-carber-daily-forum-the-lcd-group.

There are people there at various carb levels, some higher than you and some lower, but they provide a lot of good advice.

Awesome calorie availability at maintenance. So, since the gram of fat question has probably been answered above, does it make sense to lose at 1,200 calories or maybe allow yourself more calories per day and still lose weight? And since you are exercising maybe allow your body sufficient nutrients both micro and macro to allow for recovery?

NO! Not at all! If you are eating more fat, you will be VERY full. I do 20 grams carbs per day sometimes a few less or more, but I count net carbs. Are you doing Keto? Here is another link (actually part of the last link I gave you) if you want AWESOME keto info from a doctor. https://www.reddit.com/r/keto/wiki/faq
