Just caught up on the past few days of posting. Again thank you everyone.
@stoshew71 loved the video in the running store, I might have been in that store ha ha
@karllundy how is the cold
@ddmom0811 you can thank me for bringing cooler weather here. Your doggie is too sweet
@beachhouse758 great job on completing C25K. I agree with stoshew71 rest the day before your 5K if it's your first since you don't know how your body reacts to no rest before a race
@mrsgrady14 great job getting out in the freezing cold for your race, I hope the next one is warmer!
@virkati sorry you aren't feeling well - there is so much going around
@shanaber I had to laugh at the weather post too.
@5beautifuldays you feel better also
@_nikkiwolf_ what a beautiful picture

6 km run along the River Bank at 8:50pm in the Dark - Well it is a brilliant Moon tonight so not really that dark, didn't even need to use my Headlamp.
CCCCold though -18C and with the windchill -24C. It was a strange effect tonight as the weather network shows a SW 9 km/h wind and that is very close to what I was running. So after the turn for home every time I exhaled I created my own little personal Fog Bank that stayed with me as I was running.
This cold temp made me realize I need new Head gear, that little Extra Length at the ears to cover the bottom of my lobes when it is this cold. Heat wave coming as it will be back to 0C by end of day tomorrow night so I will be running in a ball cap.

better today, woke up with no pain again and managed to run without too much discomfort. but the funny thing is that yesterday evening while playing, my 50kg fluffy son decided it was good to jump on my leg and twist it - guess which one? as a result, I couldn't even sleep for the pain.
so the worse I feel the night before, the less painful is the morning after? It's really something I don't understand at all (unless I either got crazy or lost the ability to evaluate body pain or both)
it was really quiet, and I wasn't too weak. many many deers sleeping, love them. of course it rained a little bit at the beginning, and run upwind uphill for the last 1 mile, but better just 1 than 13!
I wish I could go to bed now, it is really though to wake up at 4 with a super inspiring cold, wet, dark weather...
today's random running thought: in the middle of my rain (just noticed I wrote "rain" and not "run", still obsessed and annoyed with yesterday drizzle) , while I was checking the leg, shushing my other me (stop - stop - stop - give up - give up - go to bed - go to bed etc), scaring deers, I thought "why I don't try cereals with warm milk?" - so I did, that was my treat for the HM, and I was not impressed
just a question to the community: what do you think of streak runners?0 -

@Elise4270 and @Stoshew71 how do you find Strava when it comes to using battery? I know itcan also depend on the type of phone you have but am just curious.
Currently, I only use my phone when I forget my Garmin. I did use it exclusively on 60-90 minute bike rides and never had a problem with the battery. Even paired with a chest strap.0 -
@kareF I find that when my battery is low, it drains faster. I find I can lose 10 to 20% depending on where in the battery it is during a hour or two run. I use runkeeper, though, not nike + or strava
warm milk has never been my favorite @patrikc333 I think streak runners are impressive but it only needs to be a mile to count, so that seems a little less impressive. but still it takes great commitment. I just read this article about a guy who had a streak he didn't want to break0 -
@skippygirlsmom - Cold never got too bad...stuffy, sneezy and itchy over the weekend, but good by Monday.
11/1 - rest day / Halloween Hangover
11/2 - 5.25 miles, 55° at 5:30 a.m. in Iowa! Nuts, but I love it!
11/3 - 4 miles on indoor track followed by weights / abs. After running mostly outside for six months, you can run pretty fast on a flat, indoor surface.
11/4 - 5.1 miles, again about 55° at 5:00 a.m. Getting spoiled by the weather!
11/5 - woke up with some major heel pain...a touch of plantar fasciitis perhaps. Decided to take my rest day early and try again tomorrow.
11/6 - 4 miles on indoor track + weights / abs. Heel feeling better, but not completely pain free.
11/7 - 6 miles on a gorgeous morning!
11/8 - 4 miles on another gorgeous day! Tried to get my daughter to come with, but she just wanted to walk...so I did that first.
11/9 - 4 miles on indoor track, followed by lots of stretching
11/10 - Rest Day.
11/11 - 4 miles on indoor track, then weights and abs.
11/12 - 5.1 miles on treadmill (Trek class)...always seems to be the most difficult run of the week.
11/13 - Unplanned rest day due to catastrophic appliance failure in my home
11/14 - 6.2 chilly but lovely miles in DSM...running out of these kinds of days I am afraid.
11/15 - 4.7 beautiful miles around my neighborhood...lots of stinky female gingko trees
11/16 - planned rest day
11/17 - 4 miles on indoor track, with weights and abs after (soggy, rainy day here...definitely November)
11/18 - 5 miles before it started dumping cold rain again. Not sure why, but this was a GREAT run! Felt good, relaxed, enjoyed the damp, windy and warm-for-November weather. Runs like this are super!
11/19 - 5 miles on treadmill (Trek class)...lots of speed work
11/20 - 0. It appears I caught a cold from @skippygirlsmom Decided to take it easy to make sure I have the energy to deal with the 5-10" of snow coming our way this afternoon.
11/23 - 4 miles on indoor track, weights and abs after. Cannot remember the last time I went 3 days in a row without running. Totally lazy this weekend. Closest thing to a workout was shoveling the driveway for an hour on Saturday.
11/24 - 4 miles on indoor track + 5 miles on stationary bike
11/25 - 4.25 miles. 48° on the day before Thanksgiving at 5 a.m.! Serious bonus!

I disagree as well for the 1 mile - it takes more effort in dressing up than running the mile
but let's also don't forget that many don't run just 1 mile0 -
1-0 miles
2-3.72 miles
3-4.86 miles-I think. Phone restarted during my run
4-rest day
5-sick day. was supposed to do another 4.5 but I have a hacking cough that makes breathing hard. Head colds I can run with; chest colds, not so much
6-rest day.
7-sick
8-sick
9-3.2 miles, still sick but couldn't stand it any more
10-5.28 miles. a little slow but I'm still sick. so slow is fine
11-yoga day
12-5.22 fastest day yet
13-yoga day
14-9.56 awesome miles
15-rest day
16-3.77-this one felt awful, i wanted to quit after mile 1. plus yoga and strength
17-4.99 felt better than yesterday
18-yoga day
19-4.97
20-yoga day-unless the snow storm prevents me from going
21-9.56-it felt very cool to be one of the first ones up during the snow. I got tired and achy here and there but overall it felt like a great run
22-rest day
23-yoga
24-2.6 slow to just get loose for race and because it was icey, then 40 min of yoga
25-yoga this morning, aerial yoga tonight, race packet pick up tonight. eek!
upcoming race: 8k turkey trot with cinnamon buns at the end.

11/24 - 5 miles
11/25 - 4 miles
77 out of 110 miles
Warm one today felt good to get a good sweat on. 9:45 mm pace which is fast for me, but it felt good.
About streaks, I have did one in the summer and it was hard even just the 1 mile so don't be too quick to say it's not impressive. LOL I used my streak running to work on speed and did 1.5 miles since that's the loop by my house. After doing that I truly believe your body needs rest days, people who run every day and complain they are hurt are doing their body a disservice in my opinion. I don't think I'd ever do another streak, it even took the fun out of running for me. Again my opinion. One of Skip's coaches is on like day 1,000 or something of a streak, too much pressure for me.
@juliet3455 how about a headband instead of a hat to cover your ears. I just brought an Under Amour one and I love it. I haven't needed it to run yet, but after I run I walk Macy and usually my head is wet from sweating so I put it on. It's knit on the outside and fleece on the inside.
@shanaber 2400 runners holy moly!

11/9 - Full rest day.

11/13 - Events of the day truly made it Friday the 13th. But it's over and possibly lent itself to the personal best of the next day!
11/14 - 6.01 Longest run of my life! MOD (mantra of the day) "Far, not fast." Was supposed to do C25k W3D3 but I forgot lol.
11/15 - Recovery day. **Never really knew what that meant before.
11/16 - 2.98 C25k W3D3 + continuation of lunch run (2.08 + .9)
11/17 - Snowmageddon!
11/18 - Wind day

11/21 - Sick day
11/22 - Sick day
11/23 - 4.1 Sick day- but HAD to get out and do SOMETHING!
11/24 - 4.19 Not my best experience but I was really glad to be out and doing it. I'm still learning how to dress for the weather so that I'm focused on running and not on my comfort level. Had to not let myself quit, and allow myself to walk when I felt I needed it. I'm not at 100% and had to let myself do what I could without expectations. THAT was hard!

@Elise4270 and @Stoshew71 how do you find Strava when it comes to using battery? I know itcan also depend on the type of phone you have but am just curious.
Strava runs in the background and really doesn't do anything for you while you are running.
Strava only synchs to another app that is recording your run or else you manually push that data to strava.
So I use my Garmin watch while I run. At the end of my run, I will then synch my Garmin watch to my phone over bluetooth to upload my running data of that run to Garmin Connect from my phone then over to the main Garmin web servers (either by cell or WiFi). Garmin Connect already knows how my Strava account information so Garmin automatically synchs that run to Strava as well.
I can then see my run on Strava and GC from my phone or computer.
Now, if you use mapmyrun or endomondo or one of these other phone apps instead of a watch, then they work in a similar way. Except your phone is recording the run using one of those phone apps, then when you are done with the run, then the phone app is sending a copy of your run data that it collected over to your strava account. Now if your phone app doesn't have a direct connection to strava, there are 3rd party apps that will connect your phone app running data to strava, or you can save the run data from the phone app into a common format (like .gpx) onto your phone or computer, and then manually upload that .gpx file to your strava account.
BTW @kareF, thank you for the comment on my run on strava. I can't see your runs until you accept my friend request. Do I need to resend my FR?

patrikc333 wrote: »just a question to the community: what do you think of streak runners?
So my general opinion of streak runners. Not for me. Now for some people that need something to make running fun, this may be the thing that will get them more into it. if that is what it takes to get you more dedicated to running, then I would think that is a great thing (as long as you don't overdo it and get yourself injured.
For me, the Boston Marathon is my carrot. Making it there someday is what motivates me to get out there and do it. These challenges and my running group are other sources of inspiration. In fact, when I first started out, I joined my first running challnge right here on mfp and I got hooked ever since.
Other people, the streak may be their thing.
Others, getting that strava CR or lead the leaderboard of all their friends may be their thing.
But for me personally, since Boston is my goal, it means having a strict schedule and listening to my body. That means if i feel like I need a cutback week or an extra rest day, then I will take it. Because I know "rest is actually a part of training, not avoiding training" (Dr. Jack Daniels)patrikc333 wrote: »I disagree as well for the 1 mile - it takes more effort in dressing up than running the mile
To be honest, the days I dread the most are my recovery days. They are my slowest workouts of the week, but they are also the runs that occur the day after my fastest runs, and the next day is when I feel it. So my recovery days is the equivelent of that 1 mile day. Except it is usually 4-6 miles. But I always add Sunday as my total rest day, and I will on occasion (like a cutback week or week after a race) throw in an extra rest day instead of a recovery day if I feel my body is telling me that I need that.
I rather do total rest to avoid long term injury.0 -
I know I haven't been in this month's challenge but I wanted to chime in with my perspective about streak running.
I see people who do 7 day/week running as part of their normal plans but are not streak runners because they have recovery weeks where they may take one day of rest that week along with the decrease in mileage that week. I also see people who run every day as streak runners but they take low mileage days for their recovery. In each case the only people I have seen doing either of these regularly are veteran runners who have been running with high base mileage for at least a few years. Those with less experience tend to only be able to do these things for a period of time and then have to fall back (or stop entirely for a while from an injury).
I know I am not at that point yet, but I have gone from where I started with 3 days/week to now running 6 days/week. It was a very noticeable change each time I added a day.
I would LOVE to be able to run 7 days/week to bump up that mileage, or even just to maintain mileage and maybe get a few extra minutes in one or more of the other 6 days where I have to fit in a medium-long run to hit my target weekly mileage. But I need that rest day still along with recovery weeks.
Streak runners also tend to do their streaks for a time and then typically take time off from running. Their recovery week may be a full week off from running in between streaks.
How you get your mileage can vary, the key is to be smart, only do what your body will allow, and take care of yourself.
Just my thoughts.0
