Nice and cold one... a perfect Iowa homecoming. 19 degrees with a windchill of 15. My last coldest run in NJ was over a month ago and it was a freak 32 degree morning. Luckily, I had a buddy for the first 2 miles; I goaded my brother (who's in 8th grade and runs XC) to run a bit with me and so we froze our butts off togther. Overall a good quick run! Stayed away from the giant hills in our neighborhood, stuck to the mild grades, and paced 8:08. Even if I don't like the cold, the cold likes me!

    5/1/2016: New Jersey Marathon

My wife was getting really annoying with her concern for my well being as my miles increased. I know she means well but come on...I'm in the best condition of my life, except perhaps during my high school football years. She was worried when I said I was going to do a 10K. She worried when I said I was going to do a half, now she's worried that I'm doing a full in May. I'm not going to bother telling her my plans for working my way up to ultras (I'm in love with the long runs). I'm not going to be stupid, I'll listen to my body and cut back when I need to, but the human body is capable of far more than most people realize as long as the build up is done correctly.

Then there's the weight loss issue. I'm down 46 pounds since May and am finally on the cusp between "normal" and "overweight" and I still want to lose another 12 pounds, partly because I still have fat I don't need, partly because lower weight = better race times. Those whom I expected support from are telling me I've lost too much already so I don't even mention my plans to continue to drop.

I will say, though, that those telling me I running too much or losing too much only serve to motivate me even more. I plan on running until I'm dead.

I can understand where you're coming from. I need to lose another 10-12 pounds. And like you my non-running acquaintances think I don't need to lose weight. I think you are on track. You have it to lose. I suppose it's unreasonable for us to expect non-runners to fully understand our goals. I don't understand the ones that don't run..

I'm lucky that my husband runs, but he'll call me fat too. LOL! No worries if I lose any then. But, I want to get <20%BF.. I'll have to give up some pie to get there.

Don't let 'em in your head. Sometime when I'm running I pretend the non runners are behind me. So I have to run harder. I'm not letting them beat me.

Cut back the mileage the last 2 days in advance of a 10K this morning sponsored by my local cult (along with all of the usual local running store/nutrition sponsors). I signed up for it again this year after not seeing the cult's logo on the website for the race and because it goes through my neighborhood. Unfortunately, as the cult's logo was one of the 30 on the back of the race shirt, I'll have another technical long sleeve shirt to use as a pre-race throwaway.

I was hoping to squeak under the 40 minute mark, but my shoelaces became untied at the 2 mile mark, and I didn't push it hard enough after re-tying them to recover from the quick stop. I'll take the 40:13 finish, as it got me 2nd place for my age group as well. I'm planning a light recovery run this evening, and debating if I should do my final pre-marathon 20 mile long run tomorrow or give my legs an extra day of recovery before I do it on Monday.

    12/1 - 4 miles
    12/2 - 4 miles (hill repeats at a 7 pace)
    12/3 - 4 miles
    12/5 - 6 miles
    12/6 - 4 miles (5k in 19:26 - 2nd/85 runners)
    12/7 - 15 miles (w. speedwork session in middle)
    12/8 - 6 miles
12/9 - 7.5 miles (w. group tempo session in middle)
    12/10 - 7 miles
    12/11 - 3 miles
    12/12 - 1 mile (pre lift warmup)
    12/13 - 10 miles
    12/14 - 20 miles (w. speedwork session in middle)
    12/15 - 10 miles
    12/16 - 8.5 miles
    12/17 - 1 mile (pre lift warmup)
    12/18 - 4 miles
    12/19 - 6 miles (10k in 40:13 - 2nd age group)

    Total: 121 miles
    Goal: 230 miles
    Remaining: 109 miles

16-Apr: Running for Ronald 5K or 10K, Macon, GA
04-Jul: Peachtree Road Race 10K, Atlanta, GA

Long-run day today. Got started a bit late, after driving back from Atlanta last night, but it was still a good run - 10:35/mile (neg split in mile 3 and mile 7!), so I was pleased. Pretty sure the HM is gonna be fun!

Question: since I'm behind on miles for the month (and since I was sick last week), can I do extra long-run days in the next couple weeks? It's Christmas week (and after-Christmas week) at work, so I'm taking some time off, and that means extra run time. But I don't want to wreck myself, and don't want to mess up my HM training, but it's still almost a month off, so....

    Goal- none stated

Today's notes: The day revolved around the Reindeer Run 5K at 8:30 this morning. Temperature was a seasonable 26° F as I got in my car, with predicted winds of 15-21 mph and possibly higher gusts. Not all that cold, but colder than it's been here so far this season. I had a bit of concern that I wasn't able to train in comparable weather. Turned out okay, I remembered conditions from previous winters well enough.

As is my custom, I did a preview of the course as a warmup. It came in longer because I started before the start line and kept going after the finish line, but it was a good exercise. I refreshed my memory of where the inclines and declines were (no true hills on this course), and how freaking long it was from the corner where spectators will shout "Almost done!" to the finish line (about 1000 m). Met a couple of Boston training buddies at the start line; we each had our own plans for adding miles after the race. I guessed I would run just a little under 20 minutes for this one.

Well, it wasn't a day to run fast. I've read that cold makes you run less efficiently, and I was feeling that today. At a couple of points I was compelled to slow down just to keep running. Got near the finish, and didn't have any kick left for a sprint. Crossed the line, and declined the offered cup of water because I felt like puking. The feeling passed, and I had water after a few minutes. Turned out my time was 20:16, six seconds slower than last year's gun time, 13 seconds slower than last year's chip time. (This year I had lined up right at the line.) That was good enough for 39th overall out of 1693 runners beating the cutoff, and 1st of 59 in the male 55-59 age group. One of my Boston buddies came in at 20:40, for 4th in the same age group; he felt a bit better that I'll age out of his age group before Resolution Run. The overall winner came in at 16:25; I know he is capable of running a sub-16 minute 5K in better conditions.

Reindeer Run is done for the benefit of the Strong Museum of Play, and it features toy-themed trophies. This year, I got a trophy with an Imperial Storm Trooper action figure. Last year, it was a Mighty Morphin Power Ranger; the year before, some pirate figure that I didn't recognize. I was pleased to get a figure that *everyone* will recognize this time around.

Garmin says the temperature for my warmup was 27°, and it warmed to 28° for the actual race. After the awards ceremony, I parked my trophy and antlers in my car and went out for an easy run that previews part of the Flower City Challenge half marathon course. Got that started about 10, by which time it had warmed to a balmy 30°. The Flower City preview turned out to be a shade over 9 miles, at a nice easy 8:07 average pace. I got enough distance in to add up to a reasonable long run day, and I'm happy with that. I had considered just doing the warmup and the race, then a long run tomorrow; but things kept getting added to Sunday's schedule, and I'm happier with only needing a normal length Sunday run.

    Upcoming races:
Jan. 1, 2016 Resolution Run 7.5 mile (Mendon, NY)
Jan. 9, 2016 Winter Warrior Half Marathon (Rochester, NY)
April 18, 2016 Boston Marathon (Hopkinton, MA)

@9voice9 I burned some vacation a few weeks ago, worked half days and killed some miles, 175% of my base miles. I'm laid up with tendonitis in my feet (duh). Ya know the rule is 10%, or if you're running 4x weekly you can add 4 miles, 5x 5 miles ect. So I'd stick not to far from the rule.. One week pushing it might be ok. Just not like I did. Just feel it out.

Injuries suck! Hoping you have a fast recovery @Elise4270 It's one of the reasons I want the option to walk in the HM a little .. I would love to run it all but figure, crossing the line at this point for me would be more than enough  I am not looking for another injury!!

@runner_girl83 Congrats on the decision to run a HM, wow. Nobody will judge you for walking a few minutes in between - wth would they? There's eaven the Jeff-Galloway method for run-walk-running this distance, so why should there be anything wrong with it?
Also congrats on finding a nice running shoe store, sorry your happiness about the shoes was so short-lived.
One of my two most actively used pairs of shoes are actually Brooks Pureflow, along with my Saucony Guides. Although when I bought the latter to replace my old Sauconys, the guy in the shop informed me that the Brooks were very neutral and with less heel drop vs the very stabilised Sauconys, so they couldn't both be right for me. Since I like them both a lot and never had any problems, I've just ignored that "advice" until now - but I guess there's a reason there are so many different running shoes around, too bad they weren't the shoes for you, after you were so excited after buying them.

@kristinegift I love the ugly-swaeter-party idea and the photo to go along with it! Thanks a lot for sharing.
@Stoshew71 your running group's sweaters aren't as cool, but they look like a really nice group anyway.

@juliet3455 Makes me freeze just reading about it! I don't believe I've been in -21C cold weather, not ever. Although @MobyCarp 's selfie looks nearly as cold as I imagine -21C to feel...
Though I'm almost sure I'd prefere that over @Orphia 's 30C - anything much warmer than 20C stops being fun to run in for me. If all my runs were between 5°C-10°C, I'd be perfectly haooy ;-)

@ddmom0811 setting the alarm at 4am would kill me! Though I have to admit a fair share of my runs happen between 10pm and midnight - it's when I have time, and its nice and quiet outside, with hardly any cars. Still, it's something which I would hardly ever admit to anyone in "real life", they'd all panic at the very idea...

@Ohhim I seem to remember you telling about the cult run thing last year, or wasn't that you? In any case, 40:13 ist a great time for a 10k, congrats on the 2nd AG place!

    --

Thanks to everyone who commented on my lunchbreak-running question. Seems "stuff the running clothes in a plastic bag" will be my way to go in the new year (last workday for this year was yesterday :) ). Tough I might still look around for a way to hang at least the towel up to dry for a bit - that hopefully wouldn't bother people too much...

Since lately (apart from that one lunch break) a lot of my runs seem to take place in fog & darkness, I decided to make full use of that atmosphere and downloaded the "Zombies, run!"-App. Somehow that app gave my only 4.4km for the run, while my watch calls it something closer to 4.9km (wonky phone GPS maybe?). Still, I'm happy to report that I survived the helicopter crash and have safely reached Abel township :-p

12/2 - 3 miles at 4:15am, I am tired but glad I got out as it is supposed to be a rain/snow mix tomorrow. Good start to the month. :)
12/5 - 3 miles. Getting faster but still working on cutting out the walk breaks.
12/7 - 1.5 miles. I tried my hilly park run and it was too much. My piriformis was complaining on the first down hill so I made it one loop instead of my planned 2 and quit. I gave it a good stretch and a cold shower when I got home and it is good today.
12/9 - 2.5 miles. Very stiff and sore. Never got into a good rhythm or loosened up after a session the day before with my trainer.
12/12 - 3 miles. Had an unleashed dog come running out to "protect" her owner as Neeko and I were going past. Luckily her owner was right there and she didn't go into attack mode, just ran out and barked at us. Only thing that got me really mad was her owner saw us coming and did nothing until she started out the drive and across the street. Luckily Neeko didn't really react and listened when I told him to stay and sit as he has a tendency to fixate and go into protect mode himself or it could have gone really badly.
12/14 - 2 miles. It was a beautiful 62 degrees out. Ran in shorts and a t-shirt which was wonderful until... I started chafing. Never had that problem before but I am hoping for Bodyglide in my stocking this year. Which means I am running to the store to buy some for myself and putting it there LOL.
12/19 - 1 mile. Ran a fast mile today and it started to snow as I was going down the driveway. Tried out new winter running tights and they were wonderful except they were short and cause about 3" of ankle to show so now I need to find a good pair of long socks. Tomorrow is my Santa Hussle 5k. Can't wait! There are 1700 runners signed up and another 700 for the half marathon. Told son if I do the half next year he needs to sign up as a volunteer/elf and he agreed frighteningly fast. So guess what I'm working towards LOL.

    16 down 9 to go.

congrats on finding a nice running shoe store, sorry your happiness about the shoes was so short-lived.

Thanks @_nikkiwolf_ I'm actually OK about the shoes. I have narrow petite feet and Ithink the brooks were just too low for me. I was able to get another pair of the nikes though and have since gone for a run and they just feel like home to my feet!

If all my runs were between 5°C-10°C, I'd be perfectly haooy ;-)

Me too! Our days have been around 26°c and above lately.. I either have to go running/walking at 6 in the morning or wait until sunset! The humidity has been crazy too!

downloaded the "Zombies, run!"-App. Somehow that app gave my only 4.4km for the run, while my watch calls it something closer to 4.9km (wonky phone GPS maybe?). Still, I'm happy to report that I survived the helicopter crash and have safely reached Abel township :-p

I've heard the Zombies, Run! app is really good. Do you just run where you want but have hoards of zombies appear?

Caught one of those Dreaded Winter Colds. Impossible to run when you can't breath. Even harder to attempt to swim.

Rest up @juliet3455 feel better soon!

    Dec 2 - 4.3 km
Dec 5 - 5 km (First ever 5 km without stopping!)
    Dec 7 - 4.5 km
    Dec 9 - 4.4 km
    Dec 12 - 5 km
    Dec 14 - 5.5 km
    Dec 16 - 4.3 km
    Dec 19 - 5 km
    Dec 20 - 0.5 km up a steep hill

    Total: 38.5 km
    Goal: 70 km

I also swam 2 km today, and have walked 14 km, which is about my usual walking distancce.

I counted my walking in the last challenge, but this time I'm just focusing on running.

I don't know if I will make it to my 70 km goal, but it was my first time at estimating, so it's all useful data.

    I do love data!
