@Virkati, glad you found a plan that fits! The problem I had finding a plan for my first half was that everything that was close to what I was looking for started out with much less mileage than what I was already doing. I finally had an experienced friend of mine come up with one for me that bridged the gap.
@MorningGhost14 & @skippygirlsmom, I must be nuts because I love running in the rain, even in temps as low as 40F.
@ceciliaslater sorry to hear about your pain and hope it gets resolved quickly.
    @summerdaze120, @ddmom0811, @karllundy @5BeautifulDays @CrimsonWhite @vandinem @Virkati @_nikkiwolf_ & @kristinegift, great job hitting your goals!
@GBrady43068, moonlight runs are my favorite, particularly in the summer.
@kristinegift, neckwarmers are great! I bought a Buff brand on clearance. I use it as a headband, hat, face mask, or neck gaiter, depending on the temps. Very versatile item for the runner.

    @Virkati & @HonuNui aren't we a fine team? Sore Left Hips R Us.

Yep, mine feels like muscle pain.

    It's in this region.

    hip%20flexor_zpsy5vnj1pi.jpg~original

I think it might be the iliopsoas muscles because my back was hurting a bit in that region too.

It was fine when walking this morning (did 10 km on it) but when I ran it was a bit too sore to continue wisely.

Have cancelled Saturday's parkrun and am volunteering there instead.

We just got back from spending 3 days with some very good friends of ours in a cabin in the woods of northern Wisconsin. The night I arrived we were supposed to get several inches of snow and I was wondering how it would be running through it in the morning. Instead just an inch fell and I was treated to the most magical running conditions I've experienced so far. Snow clung to every branch, twig, and pine needle. The fresh inch of snow was undisturbed on the gravel roads, and the wind was nonexistent, leaving me with only the sound of the snow crunching underfoot and the occasional bird protesting my intrusion into their domain.

I had woken before dawn, had a couple cups of coffee and then went on my first run before anyone else was up. 6.5 miles of running bliss and I was back to the cabin. One of my friends had told me she didn't know if she'd be running that morning so I should go ahead without her but she was just about to leave for her run as I came back. I shed my sweaty undershirt and long sleeved shirt for dry ones and went back out with her for another 3.5 miles, enjoying her company as we went along at a very easy pace.

There's no way I can fully describe the incredible mood of the morning. This photo I took with my crappy cell phone captures it better, though still not doing it justice. Nearly all 10 miles were run in this:

    786snffuv6tc.jpg

With that 10 miles I'm now at 113 miles for the month with one run left to go.

Could be a combonation of piriformis muscle and psoas. Mine are in constant flare ups.

Lenny I understand every single word and nuance in your comments. What you describe and show in your picture is exactly what our River Bank Bush Trails are like. The snow crunching underfoot is some how Hypnotic and mesmerizing - Zen like? Anyone who has had a run in these conditions was right with you on every step. And that is why I Love Running in the Trees in winter conditions.

No runs since the 26th due to the calf. Feeling better- no longer tightens up/cramps when walking. Will try a little 3-5km jaunt this afternoon. Oh so close to my 140 km goal and knocked down by a stupid injury.
    12/26 –7.5 Km – 116.5km – 23.5 Km left.

@7lenny7 I completely understood. I feel joyful when conditions are just right for me. It makes me grateful to be alive and able to do what I'm doing. It makes me want to hug all the people I come into contact with who are nice to me. And to super hug the ones who seem to need it more. Joyful, grateful, at peace with my world.

14.8 miles short of goal. Not bad since I set my goal as a wild guess knowing that I had tapering for this month's marathon plus recovery afterwards. Tomorrow will be a rest day and a long run on Saturday. 2417.22 total on the year.

I will go and make January's Challenge and post it below. Congratulations on everyone that made goal and see you all next year. ;-)

Finished with 1,360 miles for the year... mildly disappointed, but with the year I have had, I'll take it. Especially, staying injury free. I am bouncing back with a goal of 2,000 miles this year...

@Orphia @HonuNui I believe mine is the gluteus medius but I'm not ruling out tensor fascia latae. I'm looking up rehab for them right now. I did my final miles for this month's challenge on the treadmill last night, and I'm READY to give it a rest for a few days. Tired of chowing down on Motrin.

Sorry about all the hip pain out there today!
@7lenny7 - Being a Florida girl, I can't even imagine a run like that. It looks beautiful and sounds like you had a great time!

    Dec 1 - 2.64
    Dec 2 - 5K
    Dec 3 - 1.4 streak
    Dec 4 - 5.16 miles
Dec 5 - 4.16 miles - Savannah! Wish I had more time because this was the best run ever.
    Dec 6 - 5.5 miles
    Dec 7 - 1.1
    Dec 8 - 4 miles
    Dec 9 - 1.4 miles - streak
    Dec 10 - 3.75 miles
    Dec 11 - 6 miles
Dec 12 - 35 mile bike ride, 1 mile run
Dec 13 - 32 mile bike ride, 1 mile run
    Dec 14 - 3.5 miles
    Dec 15 - 4.72
    Dec 16 - 1.4 + strength training
    Dec 17 - 4.75 miles
    Dec 18 - 1.1 mile
Dec 19 - 35 miles Biking and 2 mile run
Dec 20 - 35 miles biking again and 1.1 mile run
    Dec 21 - 7.04 miles
    Dec 22 - 1.1 miles
    Dec 23 - 2.5 miles
    Dec 24 - 43 mile bike ride + 1 mile run
    Dec 25 - 4.5 miles
    Dec 26 - 34 miles biking and 1 mile run - goal!
    Dec 27 - 42 mile bike ride in Charleston + 1.2 treadmill
Dec 28 - 13 mile bike ride over the Charleston bridge 2x, + 1.2 treadmill
Dec 29 - 2.65 mile run over Charleston bridge
    Dec 30 - 2.65 miles - St. Simon’s Island
    Dec 31 - 47 mile bike ride + 1 mile run

Today's bike ride was really tough. It was very windy and we went really fast. I thought I was going to get dropped. At the end everyone was exhausted and one person was even dizzy. I didn't say anything to anyone but I was thinking... how the heck am I going to run now? It was about 85 and 99% humidity at that point. Got home, drank a lot, and then when I left I told myself, if I have to walk, I'll just walk. But, I didn't have to! Not that there's anything wrong with walking during a run! Just if I am only doing 1 mile, then I want to run it.

Not sure if I'll get out to run today or not. Trying to clean my messy house ha ha

@_nikkiwolf_ someone told me if you can run 10 you can run 13.1. I ran 13 miles ONCE before my first HM. You can do it!
@honunui I love that picture it just relaxes me to look at it
@7lenny7 I have a neck warmer too and love it for all the reasons you stated. I hate the snow, but I would love to run in that it looks so beautiful.
@runtimer you are welcome. I haven't been very good this month at keeping with the thread, but I'm always happy to read how everyone is doing!
    @morningghost14 wow on that xray
@ddmom0811 you have done an amazing job this year of both riding and running. Super!

To all who made their goals fantastic work, for those like me who did not for whatever reason, great job getting out there and giving it your best.

    Happy New Year's Eve!

Just completed my last run of the month. It was a 7 miler that was supposed to be at marathon pace, but I really struggled and only managed about a 10:20/mile pace. Had some burning sensations in the outside of my lower left leg and my right calf that didn't ease up until about 6 miles in (that was around when I started my only major uphill climb, so maybe that was what they needed all along). I also failed to start my running watch and didn't notice until about a mile in. Kicked the GPS into gear and waited for it to find my location, then missed pressing the start button--annoying.

On the plus side, my neck issue didn't bother me much while running. Only really noticed it when looking side to side before crossing roads.

I'll chalk my poor time up to a few things: 1) Missing my last two runs due to the aforementioned neck injury; 2) Horrible diet the last several days (visiting my parents is always the death of me--especially with all the homemade Christmas candies and cookies. Popcorn cake with red hots, need I say more...); and 3) Poor hydration yesterday. Got my food back on track today and am trying to get rehydrated, so hopefully my next couple of runs go better.

Ending the month with 83/96 miles completed.

I'm not sure I'll run today, struggling with sinus congestion. Been extremely windy and always gets my allergies.

2015 Yearly recap- 736 miles/800 goal 176 runs. was sad about that until I looked back at 2014

2014 100 miles/no goal, 50 runs. Wow! I ran like every month in in this challenge (except January). Sucky! Ha-ha!

736% improvement! I'll only need to improve 274% in 2016 to hit my 2016 miles. Seems doable.

So you guys (and gals) that are just starting out, keep at it. I was injured most of 2014 (still am). You can do better than I did!

I almost made it: 69.2 vs my goal of 70 miles. My excuse is the cold I caught flying back home after visiting my parents. Otherwise I would have been beyond my goal!

Congratulations to everybody who made their goals but also to everybody who participate it these monthly challenges. It really helps me stay on track!

Best wishes for a Happy and Healthy 2016!

I haven't been around much because we have been so dang busy since returning from vacation. While I loved being in Costa Rica it was not the best plan to go/return right before Christmas!

I have been running and ran my post Christmas Holiday Half on Sunday with my daughter and Godson. It was such a fun race and we all PR'd! I wasn't very sore the day of the race but Monday all of us were hurting and my recovery run didn't happen until Wednesday and was VERY stiff. Ran today and while not great it is getting better. It is gorgeous - cool and windy out with rain in the forecast (finally) for the weekend.

I am not caught up yet on all the posts but did want to mention a few I saw as I glanced through:
@HonuNui - love that picture too!
@7lenny7 - I know that feeling of running on the snow and the quiet. Even though I live in California now, I remember it from Idaho where I grew up and from running in Maryland when my daughter lived there. It is incredible!
@RunTimer - you are so welcome. I think everyone here is pretty awesome and you all keep me encouraged to run!

I made my goal for the month (barely but I did it) but even more incredible to me is that I made my goal for the year. When I set it I was pretty sure it was unattainable but worth trying!

    Happy New Year Everyone!!

First Run since Dec 26 due to the strained calf. Did lots of walks and last night managed a 5km walk without any tightening/cramping. A very slow and cautious 7 km run today, 49 minutes. Normal would have been 40 - 42 mins.
Leaves me 16.5 km short of my goal.
YTD since I started logging 638.4 Km.

Done (with my highest mileage & goal to date)!

With 22 miles to go and 2 days to spare, I ended up doing a lighter day yesterday, but made up for it with a longish run this afternoon, then a final 5 miler to get to my goal tonight. I'm probably a bit too close to my marathon for taking on a 16 mile day, but I took the longish run easy this afternoon, and was still feeling pretty good afterwards. Tomorrow will be a well earned rest day as I have 10 days to continue to taper for Disney. Looks like I've hit 1709 running miles for 2015. Oddly enough, my total mileage for running (1709) and biking (5000) is nearly double the mileage I put on my car.

    12/1 - 4 miles
    12/2 - 4 miles (hill repeats at a 7 pace)
    12/3 - 4 miles
    12/5 - 6 miles
    12/6 - 4 miles (5k in 19:26 - 2nd/85 runners)
    12/7 - 15 miles (w. speedwork session in middle)
    12/8 - 6 miles
12/9 - 7.5 miles (w. group tempo run session in middle)
    12/10 - 7 miles
    12/11 - 3 miles
    12/12 - 1 mile (pre lift warmup)
    12/13 - 10 miles
    12/14 - 20 miles (w. speedwork session in middle)
    12/15 - 10 miles
    12/16 - 8.5 miles
    12/17 - 1 mile (pre lift warmup)
    12/18 - 4 miles
    12/19 - 6 miles (10k in 40:12 - 2nd age group)
    12/20 - 20 miles
    12/22 - 13 miles (w. 6 miles of speedwork)
    12/23 - 5 miles
    12/24 - 10 miles (recovery & speedwork session)
    12/25 - 6 miles
    12/26 - 6 miles
    12/27 - 15 miles (final 8 miles @ 7:45 pace)
    12/28 - 6 miles
    12/29 - 6 miles
    12/30 - 6 miles
    12/31 - 16 miles (11 afternoon, 5 evening)

    Total: 230 miles
    Goal: 230 miles
    Done

    Onward to 2016!

@7lenny7 What a beautiful run. I've never run in snow at all, but you've got me sold.
@Orphia that hip picture is really interesting! I've been calling my problem spot my "hip flexors" but it looks like it may actually be the adductors.

12/1 3.5 @ 11:17 on the treadmill plus strength training
12/2 5.25 @ 11:04 on the treadmill. Oh my heck, please let it be sunny tomorrow. Or at least not so wet.
12/3 4.75 @ 12:03 on the park trail with the doggy. Yay! Sunshine!
    12/4 3.5 @ 11:03 (really 3.25 at 10:48, plus .25 at a walk) on the treadmill, plus strength training
12/5 3 miles hiking with the cub scouts :)

12/6 Woke up feeling sore from Friday's strength training, so took a rest day
12/7 9.25 @ 12:26 on the park trail, nice and easy
    12/8 3.75 @ 10:48 on the treadmill (3.5 at 10:39, .25 walk), plus stretch/yoga
    12/9 5.25 @ 11:32 on the treadmill
12/10 Sort of rest day? Trip to Colonial Williamsburg with my daughter's history class. Lots of walking!
    12/11 6.25 @ 11:18 on the treadmill.
    12/12 Rest Day

    12/13 3.25 @ 10:10 (5K race chip time 32:06--I finished 191/395 women 30/64 in my age group)
    12/14 7.25 @ 12:03 (7 @ 11:57 and .25 walking) on the park trails
12/15 2.0 @ 10:29 on the treadmill and strength training
    12/16 5.0 @ 11:49 on the park trail
12/17 Rest Day. It is cold and wet and my back hurts from present wrapping. Bah humbug.
    12/18 6.0 on the treadmill (5 @ 11:40 and 1 walking) plus strength training
    12/19 Rest day

12/20 Sick day -- I seem to have developed the creepin' crud
12/21 8 @ 12:00 on the treadmill (7 at 11:34 and 1 mile at a walk) breathing ok, but still feeling tired
12/22 4 @ 12:00 on the treadmill and strength training
    12/23 3.5 @ 10:13 on the treadmill
12/24 2.25 @ 13ish outside in the drippy-drippy rain and humidity. With the slowest dog on earth. Who has been stuck inside because of the rain and needed to get rid of 3 days worth of...stuff. And needed to chase *all* the squirrels. Ugh. I think I actually ran pretty well when I was actually, you know, running.
12/25 Merry Christmas Rest Day. Happy Holidays to all!
12/26 5 @ 11:38 through the neighborhood trails in my brand new super-squishy purple slime Guide 8s and the most expensive pair of socks (Feetures) I've ever owned. Woohoo!

12/27 Rest Day (taking an anniversary weekend getaway with the hubby and staying at a fancy-dancy hotel)
12/28 3.5 @ 11:42 on the treadmill in the gym at the fancy-dancy hotel. Sadly, the treadmill was yuck, not fancy.
12/29 3 @ 10:20 and 1 walking on the treadmill, plus strength training (worked on legs or I would have run farther! I'm afraid I won't get a long run this week with company and such, so I'll just work on speed).
12/30 3.5 @ 11:00--but this was really 2.5 at 10:00 and 1 at 13:30--on the treadmill since it was dark and rainy
12/31 Happy New Year's Eve to all! No run today as I spent it going to the movies with the kids and getting ready for our party. My monthly goal is met, although my weekly goal is really, really sparse. But I knew it would be going in. Hoping to get 8-10 more tomorrow and Saturday to finish up at least somewhere in the 20-mile range.

    Upcoming races:
    1/18/16 -- MLK 8K at Burke Lake
    2/21/16 -- Disney Princess HM

I failed to get my last run of 2015 in yesterday. I had shattered the screen on my phone Wednesday and yesterday tracked down a used one on Craigslist. Between work and driving up to meet the guy to buy the phone, it left no time to run before we went to a party. As soon as I have one more cup of coffee I'm out the door for 10.

So I finish the month with 113.4, which is over my goal of 100. That's the first time making my goal since September.

I finished year with 767.1 miles (since May). I have my running planned through my May marathon but I think I'll look through the end of the year to come up with a goal for the year.

Since I'm a numbers geek (engineer) I keep track of my miles on a spreadsheet and create graphs.
Here's my monthly totals for 2015:

    ld7i71qswbjh.jpeg

The drop in November was due to two hunting trips, a trip to see my daughter, and Thanksgiving travel.

Here's a chart of my weekly miles. The last week can be disregarded since the week isn't over yet.
