My family put in and bought me the Fitbit Charge HR for Christmas, while my sister (very supportive of my running) bought me this book Runner's World Training Journal I am over the moon! I've only managed to read through a few of the tips though so far it looks really helpful and the best part.. I can fill it in after each run and I can see where I can improve or try out some of the tips in the book to see if they help I feel very spoilt!
Nice gifts, @runner_girl83 !
I love my Fitbit Charge HR. I've had it since the start of October. It takes a week or two to get to know you, but then it's really accurate.
You've got a good RHR! 54 is athlete level. I'm pretty proud mine's about 56.
If you haven't joined already, the Fitbit Users Group is a very helpful MFP group.

@skippygirlsmom Knocking off the miles as always. Great job and a Great Role Model for Skip. Skip is a great Role model for her Peers and friends.
@Elise4270 I Agree we are all a little OCD, and don't worry about your speed being slower than those around you. One of the fastest runners in our club told me that as soon as we get into some events - even the so called Fun Runs you will be surprised by how fast you actually are when you can compare yourself to a much Larger Group than your Local Yokels. Love your advice about working a new shoe slowly into your rotation.
@kristinegift Killing the Hills Girl. I remember a Post last summer Titled " What The Hill" maybe we need a Discussion under Monthly Running Challenges for all of our Killer Hills/Hill Killers.
@MobyCarp Great work good sir.
@runner_girl83 Thanks for the support, not just for me but everyone on the Forumn.
@5BeautifulDays Christmas Gifts? New Kicks and the most expensive pair of socks (Feetures) You have ever owned.
@Virkati Seen your Greenland Trail Race and thought Greenland the Nation - not the Community.
@9voice9 CDO is no fun, There's also one more Web Site to remember to keep updated. That's part of my OCDO.
@Stoshew71 Seen the Ugly Weather/Rain that you are receiving on our Local news. Flippers and a Snorkel?
23.5 km left to reach my goal and 5 days to do it in.0 -
@Stoshew71 we're flooded here too in southern OK.
I guess it's time I learn to use the treadmill for longer runs.

My big run today was a bust. I had something I HAD to get done and have been putting it off for a couple of months so I told myself no more running until I get it done (Now *that's* motivation!). I'm glad to say that I'm close enough now to getting it done that I'm fairly certain that I can run tomorrow morning.
Planning on 12 miles tomorrow.0 -
We got so much rain, everything is flooded. This is the greenway we normally run on.
And this one we just ran on Thursday morning and it was all dry:
Wow. And I thought my handful of puddles and the stream crossing I had to hazard today were bad. Again, wow.
ETA: Yes, @juliet3455 the kicks and socks were Christmas gifts from my hubby and my mom, respectively. And far better gifts indeed than being tripped by wild puppies. I'm fairly new to this whole dog-ownership thing, but I'm fairly certain that tying two dogs together and then setting them loose is one of the dumbest things a dog-owner could do.0 -
Got in another easy 6 miles late this evening in some hot and humid weather (73 degrees, 93% humidity). With my marathon 2 weeks out, and the mercury not cooperating, I'll need to start researching what sacrifices I can make to the appropriate weather gods to avoid similar conditions for my race.

Legs felt great today. Decided to wait for my daughter to wake up so she could try out her new scooter while I ran my 8k, though by the time we got to start it was near 8am, muggy and the scooter’s stand kept falling down, causing my daughter to stumble. We ended up taking the scooter back up to the car and I said we would just do a short run instead, though she didn’t like that idea at all. We went for a quick walk instead, though out of frustration (and I regret it A LOT) we had a small argument about her talking so much and stopping constantly – My bad, I know.. And I apologised profusely once we had driven home and I had calmed down. I honestly don’t know what comes over me, though if something interrupts my run or causing me to skip it I get so cranky at everyone! In the end I got a 2k walk in but I feel like I’ve been robbed of the 8k I have been looking forward to!
Does everyone else become a monster if you miss a planned run?
Have decided now that I’m back to running to only add my running distance again. Will keep walking each day in between though it’s just easier to add runs

I'm thinking that if I use my phone JUST for audio, and let the Garmin track my workout, and keep using the Fitbit for my steps, that will be enough to keep my head spinning. One thing I know I want is the ability to start/stop the workout/race tracking more cleanly (see above re: CDO).
Any ideas? How are youse guys (how's that for a Jersey-speak from a Deep South boy) using your toys?
Fitbit for HR and step count (I don't trust the distance tracking as it always seems to be around 400m too short compared to most phone apps I have tried out)
Runkeeper (phone app) for distance/pace and HM training program (also plays my music in the background)0 -

12/2 - 3 miles at 4:15am, I am tired but glad I got out as it is supposed to be a rain/snow mix tomorrow. Good start to the month.
12/5 - 3 miles. Getting faster but still working on cutting out the walk breaks.
12/7 - 1.5 miles. I tried my hilly park run and it was too much. My piriformis was complaining on the first down hill so I made it one loop instead of my planned 2 and quit. I gave it a good stretch and a cold shower when I got home and it is good today.
12/9 - 2.5 miles. Very stiff and sore. Never got into a good rhythm or loosened up after a session the day before with my trainer.
12/12 - 3 miles. Had an unleashed dog come running out to "protect" her owner as Neeko and I were going past. Luckily her owner was right there and she didn't go into attack mode, just ran out and barked at us. Only thing that got me really mad was her owner saw us coming and did nothing until she started out the drive and across the street. Luckily Neeko didn't really react and listened when I told him to stay and sit as he has a tendency to fixate and go into protect mode himself or it could have gone really badly.
12/14 - 2 miles. It was a beautiful 62 degrees out. Ran in shorts and a t-shirt which was wonderful until... I started chafing. Never had that problem before but I am hoping for Bodyglide in my stocking this year. Which means I am running to the store to buy some for myself and putting it there LOL.
12/19 - 1 mile. Ran a fast mile today and it started to snow as I was going down the driveway. Tried out new winter running tights and they were wonderful except they were short and cause about 3" of ankle to show so now I need to find a good pair of long socks. Tomorrow is my Santa Hussle 5k. Can't wait! There are 1700 runners signed up and another 700 for the half marathon. Told son if I do the half next year he needs to sign up as a volunteer/elf and he agreed frighteningly fast. So guess what I'm working towards LOL.
12/20 - 3 miles. Had a great 5k and set a PR. It was freezing but well worth it.
12/23 - 3 miles. Did an easy 3 miles on the treadmill at work today. Wish I could have gone outside but there isn't a really safe place to run here where I won't get hit by a car. Oh well, it should be warm for a few more days so I will make up for it.
12/25 - 2 mile. Was exhausted this morning after 2 days of 5 hours of sleep or less but needed to clear my head before starting the day. Plenty of time left in the month to surpass my goal.
12/27 - 2.6 miles. I was up at 6am with hubby then made the mistake of laying back down and didn't get up until 10:30 Had to leave for a day of hockey games for son at noon (6 total but only 20 minutes each) so instead of the 4 miles I planned on only had time for 2.6. I will do it Tuesday instead but at least I am over goal.
26.6 down 1.6 over goal.

37 here, 4-5 inches of rain last 24, windy and no way I'm getting out. Have "fun".0 -
Today is exactly 20 weeks out from my first possible half marathon. I have not registered for it bcuz it's ghastly expensive (for me). BUT I still want to train for it in case the price drops as it gets closer.
So, my question is...how do I determine the best training plan for myself? I've never trained for anything before and while most of the plans are similar, there does seem to be significant differences concerning rest days, long runs etc.

I've done one half and am training for a second. This is what I use. You can do it.
http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/
I find some of the other plans a bit too aggressive for my abilities. If I feel I can push farther in the mileage, I do. The days that are run 35 min, I run 3.5 miles (at least). With the weather change, I'm totally slacking on the long run days.

12/22: 5 miles
12/23: Rest day
12/24: 6 miles
12/25: 7 miles
12/26: 4 miles on the dreadmill
12/27: 11 miles
Tough one. First 5.2 miles against a 17-20 mph headwind, with gusts up to 25 mph. Wind was at my back for the second 5.8 miles, which was nice, but my pace didn't get much quicker since I was tired from 45 minutes of slogging against the wind. Saw only 4 other people on the bike path so it made for a pretty lonely run.
Luckily, I got home from the trail and the mailman had just left after delivering the neck gaiter I ordered yesterday (thank you for super speedy 1-day shipping, Amazon!). I won't be running tomorrow since I've done 4 days in a row plus it's going to be "wintry mix" and 30-40 mph winds all day. But the rest of the week is going to be as low as 18 degrees, so I'll definitely need it!
And if anyone wants to see my fancy runner/burglar outfit designed to battle the wind, here it is:
Upcoming races:
5/1/2016: New Jersey Marathon
6/12/2016: Run & Ride HM at Cedar Point (maybe)0 -
2/12 2k
3/12 1k
5/12 7k
6/12 7k
7/12 2k
14/12 2k
15/12 5k
19/12 7k walk (sore throat)
20/12 7k (5 walk 2 jog sore throat)
21/12 3k
27/12 7k walked as my sore throat has become full blown cold - coughing/choking fit if I try and walk a little faster than usual.
I am going to keep walking to try and get near my target even if hitting it seems unlikely right now. Feeling pleased to be still going for this instead of using it as as excuse not to do anything.

I haven't got any experience here... But training for my first HM, with the plan I posted here a few days ago, Iwent with that plan because it is walking & running.. A bit easier on me right now with shins! It also only has two short runs (around 3-4km) during the week, wwhichis easier for me to manage around the kids.. And the longest run is always on a sat or sun. I can also move the days around easily if I need to.
I think it depends on what you can fit into your week, around work/family easily enough and a plan that is easy to maneuver around in case you need to move runs etc.0 -

nice long run this morning, but feeling good. goal achieved and December looks set to break my month mileage record
the only negative is the weather, not sure till when I'll manage to keep fighting against the wind. it was also miserable, cloudy, grey and with drizzle - really not motivating at all - it took me 25 minutes to get out of the door0 -

Great run this morning! Aiming to hit 80km (running distance only)
8.29km Running (jogging), 8 kph (7.5 min per km) = 14 min mile.
The last 2km I ran at 6:44 per km = 10:50 min mile (Yay!!!!!)
In the 7th km my legs completely freed up and felt amazing – I was really surprised at how fast I was going! For the first time since I hurt my ankle my feet feel really stable and good. Shin splints weren’t too bad either! Winning!!

12/1 - 0 blah day
12/2 - 6.24 (2.66 lunch run + 3.58 dreadmill walk) Felt like an upside down turtle trying to make it thru quicksand. Felt super slow, sluggish, just awful. Later on the t-mill actually felt pretty good.
12/3 - 2.83 Work lunch run...felt good. Not great. Seems like if I take more than 2 days off I lose something, like endurance or lung capacity, something.
12/4 - 2.88 Lunch walk. It was gorgeous outside!
12/5 - 5.25 Walked to neighborhood Walmart for greek yogurt and coffee creamer. Then drove back to get everything I forgot lol
12/6 - Rest day. Letting the knee calm down.
12/7 - Not feeling it.
12/8 - Getting lazy.
12/9 - 3.26 Lunch run. Beautiful day!
12/10 - 3.29 Lunch run...gorgeous day!
12/11 - 2.92 Fast walk at lunch. I dressed for the weather report. Shoulda known better! It was another drop dead GORGEOUS day. Tomorrow volunteering at Santa Stampede and will try to run the route when it's all over
12/12 - Volunteered at Santa Stampede. Mad respect for the ones running while it snows and accumulates on their lashes and nose hairs! I called it a rest day and stayed inside & cuddled with my cat.
12/13 - 5.48 Day was too beautiful to let it go to waste. I did an exceptionally slow run for a solid 4.5 miles, but it was basically an accident. Was really only heading out for a walk but then I let myself do what my body wanted. The only reason I stopped is because I hadn't brought hydration with me and didn't want to have another bad "after run" experience.
12/14 - 2.87 Treadmill. I didn't get my lunch break so I couldn't go out and love the sunshine and warm temps. We're supposed to get a lot of snow tomorrow. If I can tolerate the cold, I'll be running at lunch!
12/15 - Lost my grip on my goals
12/16 - Same as above
12/17 - Same as above
12/18 - Same as above
12/19 - Started getting my head back on straight.
12/20 - 6.39 Apartment treadmill. I'M BAAAACK!! And it's still possible for me to hit this month's goal which REALLY helped keep me going today
12/21 - 3.98 (1.38 + 2.6 lunch). First day of splitting miles. On the treadmill by 5:30am off by 6.
**Biggest win of the month...I actually got UP and hit the treadmill! Seriously HUGE win for me!!!**
12/22 - 1.57 SECOND day of getting up early and hitting the treadmill! It was more of a struggle this morning than yesterday, but I did it. Apparently I really want to hit the goal this month lol.
12/23 - Migraine
12/24 - Family day.
12/25 - 5.13 (?) Treadmill shut off within seconds of me stepping off so I'm positive it was over 5 miles but not how much more.
12/26 - 7.54 (5.39 Treadmill + 2.15 outside). Found my Polar HRM because all the talk was making me want to go buy one. Used it today to find I'm pretty comfortable in the high 130's-low 140's. Now all I need to do is find out how to USE that information!!
12/27 - 6.56 Walking to and from Walmart. I can't bring myself to run on the snow and ice. I'm terrified my knee will give out and I'll be back at square one.
