Thinking about my running goals for 2016, I'm considering to sign up for a half marathon on the 8th May (after reading about quite a few HM training plan suggestions in the last few pages in this thread ;) )
But I haven't quite decided yet - one the one hand I think there is enough time to train that I *should* be able to finish it. But I haven't ever raced anything longer than a 5k, and my longest run this year was 10 miles, and that was really long and slow... An even longer distance (with a cutoff time of 3h) seems really intimidating to me! The registration costs 65 CHF, so I don't want to sign up unless I'm sure I can do it...

@_nikkiwolf_ You can totally do it. And I say that because I don't have any races to suggest that it's even possible for me to not only DO it, but to be bold enough to throw down that I believe I can do it in 2:30, plus my longest run EVER--6.01 miles. But...I've used the pace calculators on Runner's World and several others and even if the only improvement I make in my run time is 10 seconds per mile, I'll still come in at 2:30. I can almost walk half of it and STILL come in under 3 hours. So, with that knowledge, you can do this!! And I understand about the cost. My Colfax Half was 92.65 CHF but that only means that you can bet the sky is blue that I'll be crossing that finish line!!

Wohoo, with two more runs yesterday and today, I made my "last minute" goal of more than 800km / 100 hours for 2015: a total of 802.5 km with a running time of 100h 30min :)

    28.12.2015 8.3 km
    29.12.2015 5.1 km
    30.12.2015 5.5 km

I agree 100% with @Virkati, you absolutely can run a half. I'm slow, I walk -A LOT!and holy moly I ran the first 10 miles of the half (water breaks walked- last 3 miles my thighs were chaffed bloody) , and it was awesome! Just don't forget the anti chafe stick. I finished in 2:23:50 OT (Garmin 2:22:22)

There are people that walk the whole thing. If you've done a 5k, honestly the crowd looks the same as the half crowd, least after all the fast folk leave you behind. By May, you'll be more than ready.

12/1 3.5 @ 11:17 on the treadmill plus strength training
12/2 5.25 @ 11:04 on the treadmill. Oh my heck, please let it be sunny tomorrow. Or at least not so wet.
12/3 4.75 @ 12:03 on the park trail with the doggy. Yay! Sunshine!
    12/4 3.5 @ 11:03 (really 3.25 at 10:48, plus .25 at a walk) on the treadmill, plus strength training
12/5 3 miles hiking with the cub scouts :)

12/6 Woke up feeling sore from Friday's strength training, so took a rest day
12/7 9.25 @ 12:26 on the park trail, nice and easy
    12/8 3.75 @ 10:48 on the treadmill (3.5 at 10:39, .25 walk), plus stretch/yoga
    12/9 5.25 @ 11:32 on the treadmill
12/10 Sort of rest day? Trip to Colonial Williamsburg with my daughter's history class. Lots of walking!
    12/11 6.25 @ 11:18 on the treadmill.
    12/12 Rest Day

    12/13 3.25 @ 10:10 (5K race chip time 32:06--I finished 191/395 women 30/64 in my age group)
    12/14 7.25 @ 12:03 (7 @ 11:57 and .25 walking) on the park trails
12/15 2.0 @ 10:29 on the treadmill and strength training
    12/16 5.0 @ 11:49 on the park trail
12/17 Rest Day. It is cold and wet and my back hurts from present wrapping. Bah humbug.
    12/18 6.0 on the treadmill (5 @ 11:40 and 1 walking) plus strength training
    12/19 Rest day

12/20 Sick day -- I seem to have developed the creepin' crud
12/21 8 @ 12:00 on the treadmill (7 at 11:34 and 1 mile at a walk) breathing ok, but still feeling tired
12/22 4 @ 12:00 on the treadmill and strength training
    12/23 3.5 @ 10:13 on the treadmill
12/24 2.25 @ 13ish outside in the drippy-drippy rain and humidity. With the slowest dog on earth. Who has been stuck inside because of the rain and needed to get rid of 3 days worth of...stuff. And needed to chase *all* the squirrels. Ugh. I think I actually ran pretty well when I was actually, you know, running.
12/25 Merry Christmas Rest Day. Happy Holidays to all!
12/26 5 @ 11:38 through the neighborhood trails in my brand new super-squishy purple slime Guide 8s and the most expensive pair of socks (Feetures) I've ever owned. Woohoo!

12/27 Rest Day (taking an anniversary weekend getaway with the hubby and staying at a fancy-dancy hotel)
12/28 3.5 @ 11:42 on the treadmill in the gym at the fancy-dancy hotel. Sadly, the treadmill was yuck, not fancy.
12/29 3 @ 10:20 and 1 walking on the treadmill, plus strength training (worked on legs or I would have run farther! I'm afraid I won't get a long run this week with company and such, so I'll just work on speed).
12/30 3.5 @ 11:00--but this was really 2.5 at 10:00 and 1 at 13:30--on the treadmill since it was dark and rainy
    12/31

    Upcoming races:
    1/18/16 -- MLK 8K at Burke Lake
    2/21/16 -- Disney Princess HM

Back home. Long bike ride tomorrow - New Year's Eve ride, then party and more riding. 2 more days of the Holiday Running streak! It was difficult doing it while we were away the past 4 days. Especially dealing with the dirty clothes while away. At home, I wash my running clothes at least every other day, if not every day. So having a pile of 4 days of running clothes.... eeek!

Trying to catch up on what’s been going on the past few weeks — I know I missed a lot.

    @ceciliaslater - so sorry about your neck/back.
@summerdaze120 - congrats on hitting goal!
    @Amandajs232 - that’s terrible - toe pain is awful!!!
@kristinegift - lol on the celebratory dancer.
@Elise4270 & @5beautifuldays & @louubelle16 I received a running diary for Christmas and am planning on starting to use it in January. Sounds like it has been helpful Elise.
@skippygirlsmom @Stoshew71 — thanks for the tee shirt idea/and figuring it out. I just posted in that thread also.
@morningghost14 - lol - love the picture. I had to rearrange all my drawers for my running stuff and shoes. At least you didn’t have to make a drawer for sports bras. Just think of us poor women who need tons of sports bras in our pile. But we’ve had that discussion on here more than once.
@vandinem - Congrats on goal! That’s cool about the ChiRunning podcast you listened to and had a faster time. I downloaded the Chi Running app about a year ago. It was $10 - can’t believe I paid that! But I really was interested in it and thought it would help me I watched the videos on the app a few times but the tone on the app is very monotonous (think Mr. Rogers) and I just couldn’t listen to it while running. But I do try to use that form and it has been helpful over the year.
@_nikkiwolf_ - go for it. I’m sure you can do it. If I can do it… anyone can!

    Total- 202.82 December
2015 annual total 1842.31 on 226 running days
    Goal- none stated

Today's notes: Yesterday was scary. Woke up, and my weak ankle wasn't right. It was affecting how I walked on bare feet in the morning. Did what I knew to do for it, and by afternoon it was almost normal. Couldn't quite talk myself into the scheduled speed work, so instead I went out to run hills in the evening. Paced myself for the ankle to feel okay.

The benefit of having the week off work was, I could let my body soak up 9 hours of sleep last night. This morning the ankle felt much better. By noon it was totally normal. I debated going to my customary Wednesday evening group run, but decided to do yesterday's scheduled speed workout instead. Could have done it outdoors in the afternoon, approximating distances by GPS; but caution about the ankle said an indoor track was safer. So I went to the indoor track to do my 4 x 800m at T then 6 x 60m strides. Speed work on the track is okay; but the warm up and cool down on an indoor 200 meter track are incredibly boring.

Tomorrow is a scheduled rest day. Friday is New Year's Day and a 7.5 mile race. December came in just over 200 miles, as compared to no goal being set. I won't set a formal goal for January, either; a target mileage goal could get me to do something stupid to achieve it when the better thing to do might be to back off. But I expect to run more miles in January than I did in December, as my Boston training ramps up.

    Upcoming races:
Jan. 1, 2016 Resolution Run 7.5 mile (Mendon, NY)
Jan. 9, 2016 Winter Warrior Half Marathon (Rochester, NY)
April 18, 2016 Boston Marathon (Hopkinton, MA)

    12/28 4 miles
    12/30 3.5 miles

Well it was a hot, uncomfortable treadmill run as it's been raining outside. But given how hot I got so early into the run, maybe I should have just run in the rain, as it would likely have been more comfortable. But I just hit my 50 mile goal, so it's all good. :)

    Dec 31 - 1 km

    Total: 66.9 km

I think I did well running 5 km for the first time and then getting up to 7 km in the same month.

Thanks heaps guys, for all the inspiration and encouragement!

@Virkati, glad you found a plan that fits! The problem I had finding a plan for my first half was that everything that was close to what I was looking for started out with much less mileage than what I was already doing. I finally had an experienced friend of mine come up with one for me that bridged the gap.
@MorningGhost14 & @skippygirlsmom, I must be nuts because I love running in the rain, even in temps as low as 40F.
@ceciliaslater sorry to hear about your pain and hope it gets resolved quickly.
    @summerdaze120, @ddmom0811, @karllundy @5BeautifulDays @CrimsonWhite @vandinem @Virkati @_nikkiwolf_ & @kristinegift, great job hitting your goals!
@GBrady43068, moonlight runs are my favorite, particularly in the summer.
@kristinegift, neckwarmers are great! I bought a Buff brand on clearance. I use it as a headband, hat, face mask, or neck gaiter, depending on the temps. Very versatile item for the runner.

    @Virkati & @HonuNui aren't we a fine team? Sore Left Hips R Us.

Yep, mine feels like muscle pain.

    It's in this region.

    hip%20flexor_zpsy5vnj1pi.jpg~original

I think it might be the iliopsoas muscles because my back was hurting a bit in that region too.

It was fine when walking this morning (did 10 km on it) but when I ran it was a bit too sore to continue wisely.

Have cancelled Saturday's parkrun and am volunteering there instead.

We just got back from spending 3 days with some very good friends of ours in a cabin in the woods of northern Wisconsin. The night I arrived we were supposed to get several inches of snow and I was wondering how it would be running through it in the morning. Instead just an inch fell and I was treated to the most magical running conditions I've experienced so far. Snow clung to every branch, twig, and pine needle. The fresh inch of snow was undisturbed on the gravel roads, and the wind was nonexistent, leaving me with only the sound of the snow crunching underfoot and the occasional bird protesting my intrusion into their domain.

I had woken before dawn, had a couple cups of coffee and then went on my first run before anyone else was up. 6.5 miles of running bliss and I was back to the cabin. One of my friends had told me she didn't know if she'd be running that morning so I should go ahead without her but she was just about to leave for her run as I came back. I shed my sweaty undershirt and long sleeved shirt for dry ones and went back out with her for another 3.5 miles, enjoying her company as we went along at a very easy pace.

There's no way I can fully describe the incredible mood of the morning. This photo I took with my crappy cell phone captures it better, though still not doing it justice. Nearly all 10 miles were run in this:

    786snffuv6tc.jpg

With that 10 miles I'm now at 113 miles for the month with one run left to go.

Could be a combonation of piriformis muscle and psoas. Mine are in constant flare ups.

Lenny I understand every single word and nuance in your comments. What you describe and show in your picture is exactly what our River Bank Bush Trails are like. The snow crunching underfoot is some how Hypnotic and mesmerizing - Zen like? Anyone who has had a run in these conditions was right with you on every step. And that is why I Love Running in the Trees in winter conditions.

No runs since the 26th due to the calf. Feeling better- no longer tightens up/cramps when walking. Will try a little 3-5km jaunt this afternoon. Oh so close to my 140 km goal and knocked down by a stupid injury.
    12/26 –7.5 Km – 116.5km – 23.5 Km left.

@7lenny7 I completely understood. I feel joyful when conditions are just right for me. It makes me grateful to be alive and able to do what I'm doing. It makes me want to hug all the people I come into contact with who are nice to me. And to super hug the ones who seem to need it more. Joyful, grateful, at peace with my world.

Ugh. Mushy, clumpy snow :( I miss the packed down stuff from two days ago. Just a slow slog of a run trying not to fall. But hey! Got all the miles in!

Happy, NYE everyone! See you in the Jan 2016 thread for more big goals and amazing running!
