Sauna Suit pro/con

I'm currently in my first week of P90X. To help boost my weight loss, I bought a sauna suit. It definitely makes me sweat. My question is if wearing the suit is counter productive since I drink so much water. Thanks.

These things don't burn any fat whatsoever.0

If your goal is dehydration, you are on the right track. If you would rather remain healthy, then accept you have wasted money, throw the thing away and do not sacrifice your health on top of your money.0
-
Cons: dehydration can be dangerous, water weight in no way relates to fat loss.
Pros: you're bringing back the 80's? Honestly can't think of a pro.0 -
I sip on water throughout the workout. In total I take in a gallon of water daily. I'm far from dehydrated. I feel counter productive since I'm sweating, but drink so much water b0

It’s not drinking water that’s counter-productive, it’s wearing a sauna suit in the first place.
Great way to dehydrate yourself, mess up your electrolytes and compromise your workout through heat exhaustion.

That was my point. I felt like wearing the suit was counter productive since I drink so much water. I just wanted to see if anyone thought the same. Thanks.0

The suit will make you sweat more but you're sweating out water, not fat. You replace the excess water when you drink more water...so wearing the sauna suit won't make any difference to your weight.0
-
That thing does absolutely nothing for your weight loss regardless how much you drink.0

Hi Renee
You have two good answers above.
Any weight loss from it would be purely water weight and not drinking the 64 ounces of water recommended which will just replace what You loss would be unhealthy.
There is no magic bullet for weight loss. The Keys are Exercise and controlling how much You eat. Be sure to eat enough for adequate nutrition. That would be Proteins, Vegetables, Fruits and using the food log such as the one available here to check for proper nutrition. IMO 1 or 2 pounds a week is a decent rate of loss.
By following those keys I have lost 211 pounds as of this mornings weigh-in in slightly less than 2 years. And Yes my loss was above those rates initially during the 1st 6 months as I had a lot to lose. It is now running around 1.5 pounds a week. I am eating 3 portions of fruits, 4 servings of vegetables and three meals a day as well as Nutritious snacks spread out throughout the day for 1700 to 1800 calories. I am eating something 7 times a day. My day starts with a Medium Banana and before I go walking for 1.5+ hours each morning and a 24 ounce coffee, my only coffee. Then a Protein shake and a light Breakfast meal when I return from the walk. 2.5 hours later approx. 160 calories of protein and carbs. 2.5 hours later a medium apple, a light Lunch a Light & Fit Greek Yogurt @ 80 calories for Protein for a total of 350 to 450 calories. A mid afternoon snack similar to the mid morning snack. 2.5 hours later Dinner more protein, and a couple of Clementines followed 2.5 hours by a Dessert similar to the snacks. 12 ounces of vegetables minimum with lunch and Dinner. Vitamins and minerals with my morning protein shake. Avoid empty carbs such as sugary treats.
Good Luck

Thanks Roger. Your response was the best. I am trying to eat more often. Not eating was a big issue for me. People assume that because you are fat, you are a pig & eat too much. That wasn't the case with me and my fluid intake was minimal as well. I'm eating more 3-4 times a day and trying to get up to 6-7 times. I struggle with calories in vs calories out. Does it matter if I'm way under or just under? I want to lose the weight correctly.0

Weight loss is basically taking in less calories than you burn. So you figure out how many calories you burn in a day and eat about 20% less than that number.
If you don't already, get yourself a food scale and weigh and measure every single thing that you eat to keep yourself in that deficit. Do that for six weeks and then see how things are going.
I've lost about 50 pounds doing just that. Some weeks I work out 4-5 days a week, and some weeks I don't work out at all (like over the recent holiday, where I didn't do a thing). Diet is for weight loss; exercise is for fitness. And I don't use protein shakes, meal supplements, pills, etc. I just eat less food overall.
Good luck.0 -

You don't want to be under by much, as your goal on MFP is the amount you need to lose your weekly goal amount with not exercise. Being over by a bit is better than being way under! It is a goal to meet, not to come in under.0 -
sweating doesnt mean youre losing weight.0

Unless you're a wrestler trying to make weight, temporarily, don't use the suit.0

Being overweight certainly doesn't mean a person is eating too much now, but it does mean they were eating too much for their level of activity at some point. Or, at a bunch of little points over a long period of time without enough days at a deficit to balance it out. Sure, it could have been the result of medication or medical issue, but that just means finding a "new normal" calorie balance during those times.0 -
The suit will cause you to sweat more and lose a little more water weight. You will then regain that water weight when you drink a glass of water. In other words, it does nothing but make you look ridiculous and clueless.0

I think the sauna suit is a great idea OP, just make sure you are staying hydrated.0

This is me, as well.
I had to explain to my kids that just because i was losing weight didn't mean i was on a diet. They'd see me eating cookies and cake and say something about it, and finally i was like, come on now....you've seen me lose all this weight eating like this and still haven't figured out that I'm not on a diet? ;p0 -
I have an actual sauna in my basement and I have lost quite a bit of weight. best thing I could have bought after the hot tub.0

...but why? OP will be sweating without it so what's the point other than purposely dehydrating yourself?
It's easy to correlate sweating with weight loss or calories burned. Just because someone runs for an hour on a hot day and sweats buckets doesn't mean they've burned more calories than the same person running an hour in the cold. Same burn, just more (or less) sweaty.
Good luck with P90X, OP!0 -
I go the homemade route...

I have had people flat out ask me how I can "eat so much" and still maintain my weight. Like when I go out and down a cheeseburger, fries, a beer, and then a milkshake.
Well... it's because I only do that once in a while. On every other day, I very carefully track everything, and I leave over some calories at the end of the week so I CAN go out and splurge. OR I can work in something daily if I leave those calories open for that piece of cake, or a cookie.
Best diet ever. Just eat less overall.

Keep in mind that how often you eat is personal preference. If eating more frequently helps you stick to your daily calorie goal, that's fine, but you don't have to eat more frequently if you don't want to.
And the way MFP works, it calculates a deficit for you, so just eat to your goal; you don't need to be under it, you want to be right around that number. I also look at a weekly average because some days I'm over and some I'm under, but it should balance out.

if you didn't drink so much water, you would be severely dehydrated...all those things are designed for is to lose water weight...the only people i know who do that are people who have to make weight for competitions and whatnot...and they don't do it all the time, only when they need to drop some water weight to make weigh in and then they go pound water because being dehydrated is a very bad thing.
losing water weight has nothing to do with actually losing/burning fat.0 -
All it does it make you lose water. Ditch the suit!0

I don't think agreeing with everything an OP says is supporting, though....semantics, i know. ;p0 -
I read this as 'santa suit' and wondered why anyone would work out in one.
Then, I realised it said 'sauna suit'...
My thoughts are still the same.
Don't dehydrate yourself like a prune...it doesn't contribute to actual weight loss. It's one way to go to the hospital.
Lose weight the healthy, proper way.
The guy in the Duct tape suit kind of looks like Newman.Renee_Eckhardt wrote: »I'm currently in my first week of P90X. To help boost my weight loss, I bought a sauna suit. It definitely makes me sweat. My question is if wearing the suit is counter productive since I drink so much water. Thanks.

P90x in a santa suit. It's a must see.
Seriously though....a sauna suit for p90x? What a death wish.0
