What are both racks? She's putting dumbbells on the squat rack and the Smith machine?

No she loads her weights on the smith and squat rack and then puts all the dumbbells in a pile near them.

How does she use both at same time?????

That was my gripe..she can't. Today she put a weight bench in the squat rack so trying to work in means removing her weights and the weight bench. I'll be researching some things I can do. I won't let her get in the way of my success.[/quote]

here is what you do. when she loads up her stuff in the smith and has stuff in the squat rack and is using the smith machine, you walk over and load up the barbell in the squat rack to do your workout. If she stops and says "I am using that" then stop, look around, and say "you are, I thought you were in the smith" and then just keep loading your stuff and do your work out. You don't get to "reserve" one piece of equipment while you use another one, the is ridiculous.

if she is in the squat rack then just do something else, because smith machine….

this is ridiculous. no research required. tell the front desk to ask this chick to stop fluffing off. she's got a bench in a rack with a stack of weights on a smith.....what the hell? if anything in this thread rhymed I'd swear I was reading Dr. Seuss.

she doesn't get 30 pieces of gym equipment. Tell the desk. The end.

LOL - does sound like Dr. Seuss. It's an unstaffed gym 24/7. I have the owners contact info though. They had to put up signs because people were leaving weights on the barbells for the next person to remove. I'm considerate, some people just aren't. Oh well.....

When you see her, tell her that you'll be using the squat rack for X minutes and ask her when a good time for that is in the next half-hour (or whatever) so that she can get her bench out of it when the time comes (say that). And tell her which dumbbells you'll be taking and how long you'll have them.

Just state what you are doing in a way that is matter of fact and lets her work with/around you without debate about whether she likes having to work with someone. If she says, "I don't know when" then you give her a time you'll be using it. And move her bench when the time comes (I'd remind her first just in case). But don't sound pissy. Act like it's totally normal to plan it together a bit and no problem at all.

She might just take advantage when she can. Some folks are like that. It might not end up a big deal. Good luck!

Do you all not make friends with people at the gym??

Even the big huge guys who pull/push HUGE number will let me work in with them if they aren't doing drop sets.

Show me this friend-making muscle and I will train it. Otherwise, no. I'm there to do my workout and so is everyone else.

OP, clearly no one else in the Lifters' Cabal has told you this, so I will - protein farts are your secret weapon in getting people off equipment you want to use. Go to GNC, buy the most gas-producing protein powder you can find, and proceed to crop dust liberally.

Sounds similar to an incident I had at the gym a couple weeks ago. Some woman was doing this HUGE circuit crap, using the squat rack AND the smith, AND doing lunges, etc etc. So, I needed the squat rack. I waited and waited, and waited. She went over to the smith and stacked these boxes up and put weights on and all, and I still waited for the squat rack, thinking, if she comes right back, ok, I'll keep waiting. But no, she does a set or two, then adds more weight on the smith. So I finally had enough and went and took over the damn squat rack. She was pissed. I don't care. You cannot expect to reserve every piece of equipment. If you want to do a circuit, at least don't use two of the same types of equipment at the same time for gosh sakes!! I hope she had a crappy workout

    +1

Besides, I've never run into anyone lifting at my gym that had a problem asking if someone's done with equipment, or anyone who even acted annoyed that they were asked. We do generally have plenty of equipment. It's mostly the deadlift platform that can get backed up and I'm sure that helps.

Oh, and I'll save you some time and money. Forget the protein powder and make some black beans from dried in the water you use to soak them. Trust me, no one without a gas mask will want to be in the same room with you. Ask me how I know.

One Smith machine, squat rack, and only one set of each dumbbell weight? This gym sounds horrible. I think that's the base issue for all of this. I'd switch to a different gym. You'll always find jerks but it helps if you have access to more resources.

She said it's a small town gym. I also live in a small town and belong to the gym. We are lucky to have a gym. There's no way our gym owners could purchase multiples of everything and still make a profit. For me, switching gyms would mean driving 20 miles. That's a completely unreasonable choice in my busy life.

I guess I'd just find the path of least resistance then. There are only so many options so pick one that best fits your lifestyle.
    • Stop exercising
    • Change the time you workout again
    • Talk to the equipment hog
    • Ignore the equipment hog and use the equipment anyway
    • Switch to a different gym

I'm saving this thread just for that!! Laughed so hard I almost cried lol

I've had a similar problem only from a friend point of view....a girl used to come to my old gym at the same time as me because she wanted to talk to me, I asked her politely to not interrupt my session and I'd be free to talk as much as she wanted after.....following day I took head phones half way through a set she started to tap me on the shoulder grrrr I again politely asked her to wait till after my session....I decided to come to the gym earlier she arrived as I was leaving following morning she came earlier......I changed gyms lol lucky it was a gym with heaps of locations that were all included in membership!
