Ketosis too quickly? So sick help

So I started this ketogenic diet 2 days ago. Today I woke up feeling refreshed and energetic but cranky, then I got a bad bad migraine. So, shortly after that started I got lighted dizzy and puked my guts. Figured it was the keto flu. Then I started dry heaving until blood vessels popped in my face. I had a gut feeling to check my levels on the urine strip. I was at the large 160 range. I ran to my mother in law and showed her and she freaked out. Now I am following the duet carefully. The only thing I did different was take my hydroxycut. I take it for a energy boost. Is that what was causing the sudden spike? Once I ate a bag full of popcorn I feel better just a bad migraine still. Any advice appreciate.

Do't take that junk, hydroxycut! Very bad for you! You have to consume extra sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Make it so.0

Im just starting myself but i read to increase sodium a bit if you are feeling ill. I would avoid the hydroxycut for now though. Just stick to it. It wont last long.0

I've been doing it for about a month straight and no real issues. Only once I felt dizzy and had to lay down and I think it was from too few carbs. Once I ate I was fine. I was around 10g carbs on the day before dinner. The first 2 days were harder but other than those couple hours in the middle I have had no other issues. Message me if you want.0

I dropped my carbs to 5g a day. I think I just pushed myself into it so quickly.0

First drop they hydroxycut... second, you might want to increae carbs a bit..many can stay in ketosis at 50g or less. And how is your sodium looking. Its possible you have severe electrolyte imbalances.0

My guess is a pretty bad electrolyte imbalance too.
When going into ketosis, about 5000mg of sodium per day is a good start. Since you cut carbs so drastically, make sure you are getting it. Drink boullion, salt all food, tke salt tablets or add a teaspoon of sat to water. It sounds like a lot but you need it.
Potassium and magnesium get low when sodium is low. Supplementing those will help.
As a general rule, people in ketosis get enough micronutrients from meat, eggs, dairy, nuts and veggies. Deficiencies are not common if you eat good foods.... Beyond the initial electrolyte imbalance from lowering carbs.0 -
Drop the hydroxycrap and supplement with potassium gloconate. Also get a blood test and ask your doc to check potassium and electrolytes. Low potassium can kill you.0

While true, I think this is where many newbies fail. Because of this, when following extremely restrictive diets, people don't implement correctly and cause more harm than good. In fact, I have had several friends end up in the hospital when incorrectly implementing vegan and vegetarian diets.

Take 1 teaspoon of Pink Himalayan Salt and make sure you are drinking a minimum of 64oz of water daily, more if possible it will help get the toxins out of your system, reduce the headaches and muscle cramps which will come as well if you're not adding the salt back to your body. Also a good quality multivitamin is always a good idea no matter what diet you are on. The salt will help replenish any electrolytes you are losing due to the ketogenic process. Also depending how many carbs you were eating previously the carb flu could be much worse.0

Just a piece of semantics. One's body does not build toxins. Our kidneys and liver detoxifies our bodies constant.0 -
The PHS also has magnesium, potassium and calcium but I also supplement with extra magnesium because I'm always low in it even before this woe.0

My doctor told me to only take Hydroxycut if I wanted a heart attack or stroke. Please stop using. If you are on Atkins please read their web site and follow their plan much safer that way.0

Thank you guys. I ate so many carbs last night and immediately felt better. The shocker was I am still in ketosis, just a trace amount. I'm not taking the hydroxycut anymore and I will definitely up my carbs some. I will be doing things a lot different now. As far as my eating habits, everything I ate was correct and right out of the Adkins book.0

Are you sure there isn't something else going on with your health? Maybe talking to your dr would be a good idea?0 -
So far there isn't anything. The only reason why I am on this diet is because I'm freaked out due to my mother's illnesses caused by her weight. I guess I took it all to far. I'm still a little icky I'm about to eat some ramen for breakfast and see how that goes. I'll give it a week and if I don't get any better I'll be going to the drs0

Ramen is really not a good food to eat to recover. How about a glass of milk, and a slice of toast with peanut butter or something?0

The electrolyte imbalance is what causes the keto flu. Read up on it, you should have been prepared by doing all your research. I knew if I just pushed in and powered through the flu I'd be happier than cutting carbs slowly and having the symptoms for over a week. My symptoms only lasted a day and then I started with supplements that I'd learned about through doing my research and listening to my body's cues.0

There are tons of methods to lose weight. You just have to find a way to achieve a calorie deficit to help you get there. You don't need low carb, keto, vegan, vegetarian, paleo, etc... You need a way of eating you enjoy, that fills you up, that allows you to stay on track and that addresses any medical condition that you have.0 -
I know ramen is horrible to eat, but for some odd reason it seems to always do the trick when I feel that sick. I am staying on the keto, it seems to be helping me but I won't do it to a extreme like I was. I do obviously need to do some more research and tweak it to a bit. The benefits of this diet seem to out weigh me getting the keto flu.0

Why wouldn't ramen work? Carbs and salty broth sound like what OP should have.
OP, there are plenty of ways to eat that don't have you puking until you pop blood vessels or get migraines. You don't need to eat keto do drop weight.0 -

Ramen isn't horrible to eat. If you feel sick, eating a food that you know -- from past experience -- will make you feel better is actually a good idea.0 -
Ramen helped me feel 100% better. It's my family's hangover cure. You should see the looks I get when I grab a instant cup and walk around eating it when it's 90 degrees. A hour later and I'm back to normal. At home, I even Crack a egg in it.
Like I said I do plan on staying on the diet. I won't take anymore hydroxycut that's for sure. Even the hours before I got sick I felt amazing. I slept great. I had enough energy to hop out of bed and get to my day, where as I had to be dragged out but my 2 tots. I don't get much exercise but chasing my 2 children around. Maybe it was just a bad mixture of everything. If I get THAT sick again I will toss out the idea. Nothing is worth that. I know it was more than just the keto flu. I've had the flu a few times, I was sicker last night then when I had h1n10 -

You said what I wanted to say. I had two friends that did this diet and they had to pee on a stick to see if they were in ketosis. Any diet that makes me feel like I have the flu is out and I'm not remotely interested in an eating plan that makes me urinate on a stick.0 -
Lol after 2 kids peeing on a stick that doesn't say pregnant is nothing. I like it. I'm eating all sorts of new foods I never would have. I'm cooking new recipes with the same old ingredients.0

When you don't eat enough carbs you don't have much serotonin The happy hormone

Definitely do research before jumping into an extremely restrctive diet. Keto requires additional sodium, high fat and the carbs should come from leafy greens to provide balance to your electrolytes.
Don't be fooled though in thinking this diet is going to provide some magical weight loss and prevention against a host of diseases.... it still requires you to eat less calories than you burn to lose weight. You still want to get a variety of foods to ensure micronutrient availability to address your vitamin and mineral requirements.
I do wish you luck as there are people who are successful with this diet. But in the end, it needs to be something you enjoy and can fit into your lifestyle. And if this doesn't work, then maybe you reassess what is ideal to address your situation.0 -

One thing to consider - if you try this again, and the same results are showing up, I would consider that potentially this diet might not be for you. Or that your level of carbs needed to go into ketosis is higher than others. There isn't much research on it, but some of the recent research on the human body that's actually looking at individuals, rather than looking for averages in populations, is finding that people can respond QUITE differently to different foods and nutrients. Women don't process protein and carbs like men, for example. People's blood sugar can respond the complete opposite to one another even on the same foods, and it remains consistent to the person (like one person's blood sugar level spikes with a food, and another one's drops to the same food - study on that one is here: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/11/151119133230.htm )
I have not see that there has BEEN any research on ketosis, but it would not surprise me to find out some day that people's bodies may go into ketosis at different carb levels, depending on the individual, and that what is a healthy carb level for one may be grossly unhealthy for another.0
