Concerned about my mom... rant

So, my mom has been on this new weight loss endeavor (she's done South Beach, Atkins, The Master's Cleanse, and who knows what else). She's always been at least 300 lbs as long as I've been alive. Back in 2002 she lost about 100 lbs but was still very very overweight. My mom has knee problems, back problems, hypothyroidism, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and insulin resistance (I think). She's lost about 90 pounds since about October, I think is when she started. She told me a little more about what happened and why she was having success back in March. She said her hormones were all out of wack (she was infertile for 4 years after she & my dad got married, had 3 miscarriages, and then tried for years after me - the youngest - to have more children, but couldn't) and she finally found a doctor who changed her medicines to level out her hormones so she was able to finally lose weight. She's been losing it pretty rapidly (I mean, 90 pounds since October? Isn't that a tad fast?) and she's shrinking away. I asked her last month what kind of diet she was on. She said it's sort of low carb, sort of low fat. Um, okayyy...
but then red flags happened. I went to my parents' for Father's Day this past Sunday and she was like, "Hey, I have this Schwann's pizza, is that okay for you?" I said yeah after I checked the label. When it was done cooking, I was cutting it and I told her she could have the better side (Dad kind of burnt it). She said, "Oh, I'm not eating that." I asked why not. She said, "Because I'm having strawberries." (This was lunch time - not snack time, not mid-morning, LUNCH time) I said, "And?" She was like, "Just strawberries". I said, "WHY are you only eating strawberries?" She was like "Because that's what I can have." I said, "But WHY?" She said, "I can have strawberries for lunch or for a snack." I said, "So have it for a snack and eat something else for lunch." She said No, I asked why. She said, "Because, I want strawberries!" I looked her and thought, what the HELL is this woman doing?
Then on Tuesday, my dad texted me and then told me to pray for my mom as the "doctors don't know what's wrong with her." I said, she looked fine Sunday, what's wrong? "She's dehydrated", he says. When I went over for lunch, they both had a SoBe 0 calorie drink and there were probably 30 in the fridge. I can't remember the last time I saw them drink water.
OH, more on this "diet". I asked her what diet it was and she just said her doctor put her on it. (Okay, first, my mom is the world's biggest researcher. She won't do, buy, or see anything without checking at least 2 websites or sources first. It's a little ridiculous but in this case, I wonder if she's done it.) She said it MUST be safe because he put himself and his mother on the diet to "make sure". She doesn't know the name of the diet and wouldn't tell me much about it... honestly, 'cause I think she knows it's unhealthy. I think she's gotten so desperate trying everything else that she found something that lets her lose weight and now she just doesn't care what it is, she'll do it.
Does anyone else feel bothered by this? Strawberries for a MEAL. And it wasn't a lot. Maybe 1 1/2 cups. I'm sorry, but you need a lot more nutrition than just one fruit at a meal. Anyone know what kind of diet this could be? I want to ask her more questions but don't know if she'll answer them or keep avoiding them.

Wow. I'm sorry you have to sit by and watch that happen. It doesn't sound healthy at all, but it sounds like she's determined. I hope she doesn't do permanent damage to her body. I can totally understand her desperation, but I hope she figures out she needs to try something healthier before it's too late!0

hmmmmm, i'm pondering this one...curious to see your other responses...i think maybe you should research the dr...call the office and feign stupidity or interest in this "miracle" diet he is offering....ORRRRRRR go to your dad and voice your concerns...as her husband he should be able to speak to the dr????

the diet is no breakfast (tea, water, coffee anytime)
2 servings of fruit- either 1 apple, 6 strawberries, or 1/2 grapefruit
2 proteins- 3.5 oz of lean (all fat cut off) chicken, fish, or extra lean beef
2 servings of veggies- celery, asparagus, lettuce, cucumber or spinach
2 PIECES of melba toast
Meat and veggies are always eaten together (lunch/dinner) and only the fruit and optional melba can be eaten as a morning/ afternoon snack otherwise with the meal.
500 calories total per day usually with the shots prescribed by the “Dr.”
These are the only "options" on this diet. You cannot have any fat, and can’t even put lotion on your skin (since it has oil, but I don’t think that really can absorb through the skin). It definitely causes more "rapid" weight loss (not the 1 lb per day they try to promise, more like 1/2 lb per day average over time). Does that sound like the only items she is eating?0 -

Take a look at step 3. Sounds about right. She shouldn't be getting dehydrated from this, unless she is just not drinking enough. This one does not look healthy in the slightest to me.
If Mom is giving you the run around, go to your Dad. If he doesn't want to get involved tell your mom you'd like to go to her next appointment. Lie to her (sometimes its best) and tell her that with her results you are interested in getting into the diet also. Should give you the info you need.0 -
I agree, I would definitely try to go to one of her appointments. It not only sounds unhealthy, it just sounds scary. The thing that raised my red flags is that she said the doctor put himself and his mother on the "diet" to "make sure" it was safe. That's a little ridiculous. Depending on what shape the doc and his mom are in. And I certainly wouldn't expect a doctor to mass prescribe a specific diet. He clearly isn't confident about the diet himself if he's taking actions to "make sure". Do what you can to go with your mom and get more info, then step in. Definitely research the doctor. This just sounds dangerous.0

Sounds about right. She shouldn't be getting dehydrated from this, unless she is just not drinking enough. This one does not look healthy in the slightest to me.

Dad seems to be on a good diet...he had a bowl of cut up chicken breast that had been pan fried with some tomatoes and seasoning. His portion kind of scared me because he's a big guy and proooobably needs more nutrition than that.

That's exactly what I thought, Sarah! He either doesn't know enough about the diet that he had to make sure it was safe... or... he's just a complete nut job! Just 'cause the guy's stupid enough to do it and has an MD doesn't make it safe!!! I know plenty of doctors! I had a doctor tell me I was WRONG that I couldn't breathe and then 2 minutes later after I told him "LOOK AT MY THROAT AGAIN", was like "Wow, it's pretty swollen." Not all doctors are there. I'm naturally paranoid about doctors...why? BECAUSE OF MY MOTHER! Because she's had so much shi+ from doctors and I just can't believe she's letting this doctor run her around and give her this crappy unhealthy fad diet.0 -

Although this looks like an unlimited STRAWBERRY diet, I doubt a Dr would put anyone on it, especially since October. HCG is perscribed by DR's since they make lots of money doing it. And it does give 50 grams of protein from the meat at least a minimum protein is met. I doubt she is ONLY eating strawberries all day. But that may be her 2 servings of the limited choices. Just like Gerrard Buttler "starved" himself to get slim again using a "500 calorie diet" and that he only ate in the morning was "1/2 grapefruit" and then the other stuff was tell tell signs that he did HCG to get slim before/after a role again and said he wanted to build muscles back after he lost the weight.0 -

UM, GIRL... that is the HCG diet to a T!!! And yes it is 500 calories of meat, veggies, and fruit of that exact description. It is a starvation diet no matter what they say and that is probably why she went to the hospital.... effects of starvation.0 -
oh yeah, i did forget the tomatos and seasonings are allowed... so yes it is healthy food and it sounds like your dad is eating the exact diet too.
DR's charge lots of money to put them on this diet... it is money in there pocket. Sorry but HCG is only FDA approved as a fertility drug and studys HAVE NOT proven it works for weight loss as they say.... it was the same loss for people on 500 calorie diets with or without HCG. But it is a HUGE market for it right now, because yes starving yourself works for a while, and if a Dr can give you a shot that makes you "think" it works any differently than starving then they will do it. (sorry, "im not hungry" is a side effect of starving too, not because you are taking HCG people).0 -
I just read the other day about something called GMH....not sure what it stands for...
but you have to eat only fruit one day, only veggies the next...etc.so maybe the day you saw her was a fruit day?
but this diet is only supposed to be for a week, sort of like a cleanser, obviously sounds like it's been longer than that.
I hope she's able to stop soon and just eat smaller portions instead.0 -

She said if you do it right and then maintain right, you are very successful, and if she hasn't gained in that amount of time and was never sick when she was on the drops, she did those instead of injections, then maybe it's just not for everybody, but she was very successful on it.0

She said if you do it right and then maintain right, you are very successful, and if she hasn't gained in that amount of time and was never sick when she was on the drops, she did those instead of injections, then maybe it's just not for everybody, but she was very successful on it.
Are you seriously on here telling Ariell that she doesn't need to worry about her mom that if her mom just 'does it right' the 500 calorie diet is good/ok/fine/REALISTIC Not what she is here looking for. Because camon you aren't fooling anyone on here that 500 calorie day diet is realistic healthy or maintainable.0 -

Look, I don't doubt it works. I doubt that it's healthy and is going to keep my mom alive as long as she SHOULD be alive. I don't want to see my mom eat 500 calories everyday for the rest of her life... even the HCG websites say that you can't eat anymore than 500 calories or you'll gain it back... I honestly don't care if anybody loses 100 lbs if they don't do it healthfully. That's the only lasting way to do it. My dad lost 140 lbs on Atkins. Good for him. He gained it all back. Why? Because he didn't conquer his problem of emotional eating. Anyone can lose weight...but it's being healthy that I think is important. I'd rather be 162 for the rest of my life and be HEALTHY than be 140 and have organs failing, my teeth decaying and my hair falling out.
I followed an anorexic girl's blog for awhile and her daily calorie intake was 300-400. That's only 200 calories less than my mom is eating. That's not a diet. That's starvation.
And to those still watching this thread. I got it confirmed by my dad that she is on this diet. Now I just have to talk to her and see if I can't get her to see the light and get off it.0 -
Arielle, I hope that you can reach out and connect with your mom on this. It's likely going to be hard but just keep giving your mom positive messages about how beautiful she is and how much you love her and how much she means to you no matter what size she is. That you just want her to be healthy happy and the confident amazing mother that she has always been to you. Let her know that with this diet you worry that she can't be these things to you and your dad but also to herself.

Have you ever shown your mom this site? There are plenty of women that have lost 100+ lbs (the right way) and kept them off (TamTastic and Tamishumate come to mind). Maybe if you showed her the threads these women have posted it might give her hope that it is possible and she'll come around to your way of thinking.0

My wife and I are starting the HCG diet next weekend. I know for a fact that that the only drinks allowed to be consumed while on this diet are coffee, tea, water, or mineral water...and someone on this diet should be consuming about 2 liters per day of these. If you follow the dietary requirements properly, you are not likely to become dehydrated.0

this is an extreme diet. i would lay money on the table that says if you eat a diet that consistently included leafy greens and a variety of fiberous vegetables, drank at least 1liter of water a day (preferably 2) and took a walk every day, you would lose weight.
the above described (500cal) diet is enormously difficult to maintain after the weight is lost. how does one have a social life at all?
mark this as another reason i dislike doctors. i don't want to group all of them, as there are occasionally some good doctors around, but remember that doctors are just people and people are messed up.0 -

I talked to her in depth last night, asking her questions about how she came to decide to get on this and how exactly she's following it. She's completely oblivious. She's following Kevin Trudeau's book (who, by the way isn't a nutritionist, dietician, or even just a regular doctor. He owns a billiard company) and is currently on her 4th round of HCG. Her doctor did 4 rounds himself (to "make sure it was safe" for her to use it) and said it would be safe for her to continue using until she's done losing weight - at least 100 lbs more. Everywhere I've read has said HCG should be used to jump start weight loss to reset your thyroid and hypothalamus, etc. not to lose 200 lbs. I told her of the dangers and side effects and she had an excuse for everything.
I asked her to consider counting calories and doing it the safe way... mentioned all the amazing women on this site who have lost so much weight just doing that (with Tamtastic in mind!) and she asked me how many times I've seen her do that. I told her none, that I saw her try to eat healthy during the day and snack at night. Consistently, when I was a teenager, I would make her chicken, a veggie, and carb for dinner and she would eat it, then proceed to eat 2-3 bowls of cheeto puffs and 1-2 bowls of ice cream. That's why she never lost weight.
She told me that she's been pregnant 6x and the only time she lost weight was when she was pregnant (Lie. She lost 100 lbs in 2002) and a "little" HCG isn't going to hurt her. She's on 200mcg a day, what that means, I'm not sure.
I'm still worried regardless of all her excuses. Her excuse was that she was 300 lbs and headed for heart disease and diabetes. I want to tell her that now that she's close to 100 lbs LESS than that, that it's safe and would be effective to do it the healthy way from now on, but I know she won't listen to me.0 -
Regardless of the debate over HCG, I would definitely be worried about your mom. If she is nauseated and isn't staying hydrated then whatever she is doing isn't working for her and could be dangerous. Any chance you can convince her to see another doctor?0

Sound like it could be Phentermine. When I took it about 9 years ago it was from a "Diet Doctor". I lost 50 lbs in 6 months. However, It required that I go every week to have my blood pressure checked, weighed and then he would give me the next week's worth of pills w/vitamins. He also only allowed patients to walk as the form of exercise.. These days it seems Dr.s just prescribe a months worth and you are on your own.

I have long given up trying to talk my mum out of her dietary habits... luckily that are so un-sustainable that it usually doesn't last longer than a day!! :laugh:
I think there is a place for very low calorie diets in the management of obesity. I also think HCG sounds like rubbish, seems you lose weight by eating very few calories but have to pay a ridiculous amount of money for these shots that apparently are the reason for the weight loss. Also, as you say Arielle, she has been on it way too long. VLCDs can be valuable as a kick start to weight loss or as an emergency remedy for surgery preparation etc but when they are done over the long term they have serious potential side-effects like kidney and other organ dysfunction.
In my experience, Drs are VERY pro VLCDs... which I'm guessing is because they show fast weight loss results and the patient leaves thinking they are a good doctor who has found a 'cure' for them. People come to see me and I tell them to eat healthily and exercise more (in a few more words than that haha) and discuss strategies to achieve that and they leave thinking it was a waste of their time! :ohwell:0 -
I never seriously considered HCG, but as a result of some posts on here, I did some research, and one thing I do recall was that it was specifically stated that you were not supposed to stay on it indefinitely. There was a maximum number of days, and then you were supposed to go to another level of eating for a while. I agree your mom is treading on shaky ground.
I am old enough to remember why Karen Carpenter died of heart-related problems as a young woman. She was anorexic and basically destroyed her heart by consistently failing to get enough nutrition. For those of you who don't know who I am referring to, she was the female half of "The Carpenters"--popular musicians from the 70's and early 80's. She died of cardiac arrest in 1983 at the age of 32!! Here is a link to a pretty complete picture of what happened:

Your mom is probably older than Karen was when she died, but Karen started out as someone who was "always fat" and her desire to lose weight morphed into something very unhealthy. I think she needs a second opinion from a different doctor in a different clinic than where she is now going. Good luck!!!0 -

Wow I'm so sorry to hear about your mom...it makes me sick what some doctors will do..just to make a buck (thank god up here its public health and we don't have that happen so much but still..docs can be morons anywhere).
Please keep us up to date. I'm very much aware of how much I eat everyday..I have a lapband and I don't want to lose wt through starvation..just because my portions are smaller. I don't eat junk..so I have to make sure I get 1200 cal minimum to make sure I have enough fuel for my body..when I forget to eat I might get 800cal..and I feel run down the next day.
I certainly know what its like to be scared and looking for a last hope...I'm just glad my 2 options for a last hope were lapband and OA..both are working for me and I"m losing fast but healthy.
I hope you can get through to your mom because its about her health and this isn't the right way to go.0 -

Her doctor did 4 rounds himself (to "make sure it was safe" for her to use it) and said it would be safe for her to continue using until she's done losing weight - at least 100 lbs more. Everywhere I've read has said HCG should be used to jump start weight loss to reset your thyroid and hypothalamus, etc. not to lose 200 lbs. I told her of the dangers and side effects and she had an excuse for everything.
I asked her to consider counting calories and doing it the safe way... mentioned all the amazing women on this site who have lost so much weight just doing that (with Tamtastic in mind!) and she asked me how many times I've seen her do that. I told her none, that I saw her try to eat healthy during the day and snack at night. Consistently, when I was a teenager, I would make her chicken, a veggie, and carb for dinner and she would eat it, then proceed to eat 2-3 bowls of cheeto puffs and 1-2 bowls of ice cream. That's why she never lost weight.
She told me that she's been pregnant 6x and the only time she lost weight was when she was pregnant (Lie. She lost 100 lbs in 2002) and a "little" HCG isn't going to hurt her. She's on 200mcg a day, what that means, I'm not sure.
I'm still worried regardless of all her excuses. Her excuse was that she was 300 lbs and headed for heart disease and diabetes. I want to tell her that now that she's close to 100 lbs LESS than that, that it's safe and would be effective to do it the healthy way from now on, but I know she won't listen to me.
Please talk to your mom again. I started this journey at 304 lbs and have lost 76 lbs since Jan 1st doing it the right way. It is possible to have extraordinary results doing it the right way. the larger you are the faster it comes off in the beginning. I think she would be suprised and not so hungry0 -

Ah, thanks. In hospitals, OA means osteoarthritis haha and I knew it wasn't that she was referring to.0
