I'm training for the Nike Women's Marathon on Oct. 20th. My run club is Nike Run NYC and their marathon training is in sync for the NYC marathon. We're doing about 11 miles on our long runs right now. For cross training I strength train and also do Nike Training club, which is a HIIT workout.
    Good for you!

Wow! Lots of us will be running marathons around the same time. I just printed off Hal Higdon's Intermediate 1 program. I will start immediately. Just curious what you all do for cross training. I have been biking but I don't feel like it is a very good workout.

I do CrossFit. I love it.

Is there a specific program that you follow? I'm not familiar with crossfit at all.

Can I find the Nike HIIT workout online? Otherwise would an Insanity workout suffice?

It's actually an app available in the Apple App Store. Completely walks you through the entire workout and has video demonstrations too. My gym actually has Nike Training Club classes where they trainers are certified by Nike to teach it. I do that and the app. They had me in the best shape of my life before I got injured.

I've run two full marathons with Team In Training Nebraska and they wouldn't have us doing 14 miles this early in the season. You do want to work your way up to 20 or 22 miles for your long run about three weeks before the race. Then you can enjoy your taper to the fullest. I'm running a 1/2 the same day, but in Des Moines. Best of luck!!

Thanks for the info. I will definitely check it out.

Marathon training is not a "one size fits all" type of thing. It depends on your level of fitness and your goals. Some plans may have one 20+ mile run. Others may have many. Personally, I'll do 5 runs of 20+ miles prior to my race, but the last one will be about 5 weeks before the race, not 3.

Hello again! I understand that marathon training is not a "one size fits all" type of thing. Msstatz - is this your first full marathon? How fit are you? How did your last long run go? These all are questions to considered. Also, have you scaled back any week you've been training? For example, one week you made it up to 12 miles, the following week only done about 7-8 miles and repeated the 12 miles or more the third week? When did you start training? See lots of questions! I want to start swimming laps as cross training, just haven't made it there yet.

You are obviously more fit than I, CarsonRuns. I don't disagree with you at all. I was on a beginner level with Team In Training, but I was also focusing on raising much needed dollars for cancer research. As a more seasoned runner, of course you would do more longer runs. Do you also run ultra marathons? How do you taper when your last 20+ miler is 5 weeks prior to your race?

I have no desire (right now) to go further than 26.2. Of course, I said the same thing about 13.1 a few years back.

I misspoke. On my last marathon (October 2012), I did my last 20 4 weeks before the marathon, not 5.

    21
    18.5
    13
    RACE

I did two 20s and two 21's and a total of 8 runs of over 18 miles.

Everything is open in my running log at this link. The marathon was 10/21/2012

This link should take you right to that page on the calendar.

I am running my first full on October 20th. I have ran 4 halves and right now I"m in slow mode (just ran my last half 1.5 weeks ago) so my "oficial training" doesn't start until the end of July. I have 3 runs scheduled for 20+ miles. My current long runs are 10s and 12 unitl the end of July when they start to ramp up (slowly of course) I have a half scheduled for the first week of September (a small town half, I'm hoping to place at :) but more just to get me ready for race day. I"m really nervous about my first full, and the training runs leading up to it. It doesn't help that the peak of my training will be in the hot days of August and September But I have heard that makes for a good late fall race :)

I'm looking to run a full in late fall...I ran my first in May this year.

I think you are very handily placed with a long run of 14 miles and around 5 months to train...

    Go for it!

That's pretty intense. The plan I was following has two 18s and a 20. Towards the end it's 18,10,18,14,20,10,8, race.
