I'm not saying there hasn't a;ways been crap available. I'm saying that there is a higher ratio now of crap/good.
There's just a higher volume than ever before of everything; so you're going to see more crap but you're also going to see more good stuff too. The ratio is probably about the same.0 -
Oh and they did Titus not too long ago with Anthony Hopkins in the staring role.
Fourteen years ago.
Not bad for a play that was written over 400 years ago. I'd say it 'survived the years'.
I took two Shakespeare classes in college and one in high school and never once did my professors assign this play. It is far less known and far less popular than the rest of them.
In 37 years of amazing productions, Shakespeare in Delaware Park has never performed it.0 -

I don't know about that. With the way the economy has been I think studio's are being more and more cautious and less willing to take risks. I think a direct result of that is a lower quality in things to watch.0 -

I'm not saying it's a good play. I'm saying crap in entertainment has always existed. It did 2000 years ago, it did 1000 years ago, it did 400 years ago and it does today.
Entertainment hasn't gotten better or worse, the dates, availability and venues have just changed.0 -

I understood that. I agree there has always been bad entertainment. I just think we have more bad now and less good.
When six months go by and there are movies coming out every week and not one of them looks decent, that's not good.
And when we have so many more channels but so few decent options, not good. I guess I was just pointing out that it's not a good play and people didn't flock to it. This is less about what we're given and more about the people who accept it. Everyone (mostly, it seems) loves the Real Housewives and The Bachelor and the plotless movies and they watch and give their money to those things. Then something fantastic comes out and no one bothers with it.
It seems like we have more choices in general, but fewer that are worthwhile.
I still have hope for literature, but the success of 50 Shades (sold more copies than Harry Potter!!!!) scares me.0 -

I understand. We just have slightly different opinions on the ratio. :flowerforyou:
I also can't stand reality TV and find it vacuous. I love the science channels for the most part (not the ridiculous alien or end of the words shows) and a few of the premium channel series.
As a curiosity, I looked up the top grossing movies from the past year. Of the top 100, I only like 11 and none of them were masterpieces, just ones that I saw and enjoyed. A couple from different genres: Gangster Squad, Savages, Warm Bodies, Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln, Star Trek Into Darkness and Skyfall.
And now I'm just rambling.0 -

Gah! Even those channels are getting ridiculous. Every once in a while there's something good, but they're getting into the crappy reality stuff and sensationalism more and more. A&E used to have really great programs, too. ARGH!!!
I liked Zero Dark Thirty a lot. I actually saw it twice.0 -

I'm also disappointed by all the crazy on some of the science channels now, like Ancient Aliens and similar eye-rolling crap. Off the top of my head 'Into the Wormhole' is one I like. I'm also a sucker for the "how it's made" sort of shows. I used to love A&E's biographies back when they did a lot of historical figures but slowly they just started doing celebrities (I couldn't care less).
The previews for Zero Dark Thirty were very misleading (in a good way) since they barely even show the CIA agent despite the fact that the movie was really about her.
And I'm rambling again.0 -
Hamlet 2, anybody? I loved it, but I enjoy offbeat comedies.

I was glad they showed a more realistic side of that kind of operation and didn't focus on the gore. I also was glad they showed the SEALs in a positive light and didn't do the stereotypical thing with showing the military as full of cocky, overzealous idiots. That was a huge issue I had with Olympus Has Fallen. It had great potential, but was way too unrealistic for something that wasn't complete sci-fi or fantasy. And the movie left a lot of plot holes.
I loved Mysteries of the Bible on A&E. It was fascinating. I used to watch the marathons and never get bored.Hamlet 2, anybody? I loved it, but I enjoy offbeat comedies.
I'll have to check it out. I like when people get creative with Shakespeare.0 -
I look back just 15-20 years at the movies available and there were far more good ones to choose from. TV, too. All this reality crap is new. TV has been around widely for 60 years and it's taken a sharp turn for the worse in the last 10.
lol its obvious you are trolling or dont watch TV. television in the last 10 years has been better than at any other time in history.
your problem seems to be you cant see the forest for the trees.0 -
I have seen some dumbing down in the US, but its not just the types of movies. Personally I love action movies, not much for Shakespeare, but my daughter, she loves both.
To some extent it is taste. Even in reading I prefer vampires and action to love stories. That does not mean I only go for trash. I love classics like Edgar Allen Poe and am now reading HP Lovecraft. I also loved A Tale of Two Cities. I also read trash sometimes.
However, with movies, I would give anything for some intelligent comedy once in a while. I like a good stupid movie too, but a nice intelligent comedy would be great. The problem is most of them go over people's head. Canadian Bacon was a great movie, but not popular at all.0 -
See, my mind does not relax to that. I can't "escape" into it because it's not good. Watching Olympus Has Fallen (I'm sure the book is better), all I could think about was the glaring plot holes in what could have actually been a good movie.
I thought the EXACT same thing!!!0 -

I don't look at any particular genre as trash. I think Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel were brilliant. Twilight is trash (at least the first two movies were. I have no personal experience with it beyond that.).
Even action movies can be excellent. It isn't the genre I have a problem with. It's the lack of quality within it. I am a HUGE fan of Star Wars, which is certainly in the action genre, among others. It tells an amazing and well-written story. Even my BF, who is far less picky than I am, agrees with me on this. We've both walked out of action movies very disappointed because while there is plenty of action, there's no story to keep us interested.
There have been exceptions recently, but fewer and fewer.0 -
In high school there was a Shakespeare festival I used to be very heavily involved in. I acted, stage managed, worked the box office. Everything. Gave me a huge love of theater in the park and Shakespeare.
Loved Whedon's Much Ado. I was really nervous, but he did good.
Now we have a different company that does Shakespeare in the park. I go every year. Never fails to suck me in.
Nathan Fillion had me in stitches.
Dang, I didn't realize this was already out! I'm glad to hear it is good, I love Whedon, and I looooove Nathan Fillion!!0 -

you must be a fan of 70s tv? Threes Company, Love Boat, Fantasy Island?
you cant deny that since 2000 there has never been a better time for tv can you?0 -

if someone says tv has take a sharp turn for the worse in the last 10 years trolling is definitely a possibilty because its such an absurd statement.0 -

not sure what your motivation is...like i said you may just not watch tv anymore or you may only watch reality shows and thats the reason why you think tv has taken a turn for the worse.0 -

Opinions are opinions and everyone is entitled to them. Are you suggesting that her opinion is divisive and inviting passionate dispute?
Because I don't care enough about television to get angry about it. If you do, then you need better things to do with your time!0 -
Boo!!! Now I want to see it! I love Whedon's stuff... except Serenity and that's not because it was bad per se.... and I love Shakespeare... Who can go wrong... AND it has high ratings from from users and rotten tomatos on flickster... but it's not showing anywhere near me. :-( I don't really want to drive 2 hours in metro traffic to see it.0

you cant deny that since 2000 there has never been a better time for tv can you?
Well, yes, I can deny that. In my opinion, the majority of programming is lousy.
That isn't trolling. It's stating an opinion.0 -

its fun to argue about tv, movies, sports etc..
you are wasting your time right now in a thread where someone is complaining about movies. sounds like you should take your own advice.0 -

You are adorable. Every time you post, really, you're simply adorable.
Also, based on your posts in here, you seem to have only bothered to read one single sentence of everything I've written. That you think I watch reality TV is ... adorable.0 -

I'm defending her right to an opinion which is far more important to me than whether or not you think Snookie produces quality television.0 -

yes you are wrong. it would be like you arguing the New Kids on the Block are better than the Beatles. it would be your opinion and you would be wrong.
but at least you like Buffy and Angel.
now for the most important question...this is the one that really matters....who should have Buffy been with...Spike or Angel.0 -
