does anyone exercise with a weighted hula hoop? I love hula hooping while watching tv. I heard it is a good cardio/core strenghthen exercise. Does anyone know if that is true? I usually add it on top of other exercises because I am not sure about it being an exercise on its own.

Does it get your heart rate up?

Did you look up the calorie burn (hint: it is probably more than some of your targeted exercises.

it is aerobic and it's a lot of fun. your sides will be sore at first.
what the calorie burn is, I am unsure.

Here's a link to the hooping group here:http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/2763-hooping

The group's not very active, but there's some info. Calorie burn estimates are all over the place. I second - it's aerobic, and it's fun.

A non-weighted hoop is better than a weighted one: you use more energy keeping the non-weighted one in motion than you will the weighted one; likewise, a smaller hoop will be more difficult than a larger one, as you have to move faster.

Honestly, I'd suggest making your own hoop. These are some of the ones I've done out of irrigation tubing (150psi for beginners, 125 for more advanced) and plastic pipe connectors. I have some smaller twin hoops for off-body work as well; about the only thing I cannot make are mini-hoops (the tubing will only bend so far).
