Good luck @kristinegift ! can't wait for your race report!
Good luck @lporter229! Hope it's not too wet, I hate wet shoes/socks!
@WhatMeRunning - I keep looking online at shoes (while I should be doing other things. - And I don't really need a 3rd pair - usually I rotate too, but I will be saving $! Rotate through 7 pair! WOW, I'd need a spreadsheet for that.

Strength training after work today and tomorrow my last run of the month and will hit goal. I normally ride my bike Sat AM, but going to the last programming competition of the year. It's a tough one, but my team has gotten first place at all but one competition this year, so hopefully... they will continue the streak! Unfortunately I have to be there at 7:15am and it's on the other side of Orlando so it will be another 4:30am run. We can't bring in any phones or devices because it's at a defense contractor... so I won't be able to read about everything until I get home. sigh. Last year I could tell the other teachers were having phone withdrawals like I was.

@ddmom0811 - I hear you about saving $! I'm hoping to save money later by not having to buy shoes for a long time. That's the theory. Reality may be wildly different.

I call it frontloading the cost. I'm doing it too.

    4/1 - 3.5 miles on indoor track + weights/abs
    4/2 - Life day
    4/3 - 10 miles. Very windy.
    4/4 - Rest day.
    4/5 - 4 miles on the treadmill, then weights/abs.
4/6 - 4.3 miles. Cool, damp and breezy.
4/7 - 4.5 miles on treadmill (Trek class)
    4/8 - Rest day...lots of housework/painting/yardwork
4/9 - 4.05 mile trail race...super fun with local microbrews at the end! Had way more fun than I expected!
4/10 - Skipped my long run due to back pain / spasms. Not sure if they were from the trail race or from moving my son's room. Had to skip my planned 10+ mile long run. Hope it gets better fast!
4/11 - Woke up with continued back pain. Getting cranky.
4/12 - 4.4 miles. Chilly, but tolerable. Back was tender, but not painful.
4/13 - 5.43 miles. Went further than planned, because it was beautiful out.
    4/14 - 3.48 mile evening run.
4/15 - 10.01 miles. UGLY. Hot, humid early afternoon run. Went out too fast. Had to take a short walk break in the middle.
    4/16 - Rest day.
    4/17 - 5.19 miles. Cool, comfortable.
    4/18 - 4.72 miles.
4/19 - 3.98 miles while my daughter had soccer practice
    4/20 - Unplanned rest day.
4/21 - 4.8 miles on treadmill (Trek class)
4/22 - 4.0 speedy miles on indoor track, then weights/abs
    4/23 - 11.05 miles long run
    4/24 - Rest day.
4/25 - 3.5 miles. Small taper leading up to HM on Saturday.
    4/26 - 4 miles.
4/27 - Unplanned rest day / life day.
4/28 - 4.5 miles on treadmill (Trek class) - reduced my regular pace and did "hills" at lower incline than instructed
4/29 - Woke up and debated about running, but I have had good luck taking the day before my HM off. So, I did. Drinking lots of water today. Forecast for tomorrow looks really crappy. About 45° F and 100% rain chance for the start of the race. Same for the two hours I will be running. Ugh.

    I ordered new shoes!!

    Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

Whatcha get this time? More Ghosts? I'm thinking about getting a 4th pair of shoes since I'm running 5 days a week now.
I picked up 2 pair actually. Another pair of Ghosts (to replace my dying Glycerin 12's) and a pair of Brooks Dyads. I wore some Dyads last year and liked them a lot but felt I liked the Glycerine just a little bit better so I stuck with the Glycerines from then on. Now I'll get to compare Glycerines, Ghosts and Dyads over the next few months. I don't think my feet could be any happier. Another reason I picked up the Dyads is that I have a pair of Mizuno Wave Riders that I am OK with but am not comfortable taking on long runs (they are super clompity-clompy). So the Dyad's can fill in a bit of a gap. My current rotation will be:

    2 pair Glycerine 13's
    2 pair Ghost 8's
    1 pair Dyad 8's
    1 pair Mizuno Wave Riders
1 pair Hoka Challenger (these are my dedicated trail shoe currently)

Since I am training 6 days/week and have 6 pairs of road shoes, I will obviously have to buy another pair to make sure I am alternating shoes each day from week to week. That was another reason I got the Dyads. :naughty: I have a $20 off coupon at my local shoe shop so I am picking up a 3rd pair of Glycerines probably this weekend so I can rotate through 7 pair.

Yeah, I might have a running problem.

And they say women buy too many shoes

 I could never criticize a woman's collection of shoes since taking up running!

As mentioned earlier though, about going to the local running shop for another pair of shoes.. the deed is done.

So I had a $20 off coupon. They told me they were having a sale on Brooks at $15 off per pair. So I could get $35 off my Glycerines. But if I bought another pair of Ghosts I would be saving $50 bucks! Who could possibly say no to that???

So I may have acquired 4 pairs of shoes overall today.

I am sure this makes sense. Right?

    4/30 –

April total to date – 161.88

Nominal Challenge Goal – 200 miles
Real Goals: Taper well. Arrive at Hopkinton healthy. Run Boston well. Recover well.

Today's notes – After taking 4 rest days in a row, today marked my not-so-triumphal return to running.

In addition to the leg issues, some time this week I came down with a cold. On Wednesday it was pretty obvious, to the point where my boss didn't want me to breathe in her direction. On Thursday, a work at home day, I was pretty miserable. Last night I soaked up almost 10 hours of sleep, and could have soaked up more if I'd called in sick to work. But I got up, and went to work. Somehow got some work done. The leg felt good on my walk at lunch, and the trial running periods were 100 to 200m, slowing to a walk more out of concern that I wasn't really dressed for running than because anything hurt or didn't work right. A mild cough associated with the cold was actually more annoying that the state of my running chain.

So this evening I set out to run a familiar 4.3 mile route with 3 small hills. By evening, I had a very light shower, almost a mist, to run in, as opposed to the near-perfect running weather that I didn't run in the last 4 days. Felt the odd sore spots at first, then warmed up and after 400m or so felt pretty good. Up the small hills presented no problem. Still felt it a bit on the downhill, applied the lessons from training for downhill. Noticed a pace of 7:20 after going down the last hill, forced myself to slow down. The idea is to run easy, not to run MP. It felt like my judgment of what was easy was shot, and I need to learn how to run easy again. But the stats on the run looked reasonable for easy after the fact, so maybe I just happened to notice the fastest points and corrected reasonably well.

By about 3 miles, I realized I've got a dull ache in my right hip abductor. It doesn't really hurt, but it reminds me it's there. So I took a minor jog in the route to shorten the planned 4.3 miles to 4 even. Still felt pretty good, but that pesky hip abductor complained pretty loudly when I went to stretch it. Oops. Worked to stretch it out, found my long-unused ice bag, and applied an ice pack to the hip abductor for about 25 minutes. Then I made sure to take my next dose of ibuprofen on time.

Tomorrow's paced run is 9 or 18 miles. I reported off from pacing, as I clearly can't commit to 9 miles tomorrow. That will let me sleep late, giving the hip abductor more time to heal up. I'd like to run 4 to 6 miles tomorrow, but it really depends on how that hip abductor reacts to today.

The good news is, my cough was gone and my cold was much improved after my run. This has happened before, where a good run has cleared out a cold. I don't understand why it happens, but it does. The different thing this time is, it may not have totally been a good run on the recovery front. I'll know better tomorrow how to judge today's run.

People have been impressed with the fact that I BQ'd at my first marathon, and ran Boston as my second marathon. Yeah, I suppose that's unusual. The down side is, I ran Boston and I don't really understand recovery from a marathon. I'm learning that as I go along, in part by making mistakes. I just hope I don't make any huge, non-recoverable mistakes as part of the learning process.

Yeah, I might have a running problem.

Pick up your game, slacker. With my recent addition of the Merrell Bare Access Ultra and the Merrell Mix Master Speed, I have increased my collection to 14. Yeah, you may have a problem, but how many times you been to rehab for sniffing Shoe-goo and telling yourself those shoes with 800 miles on them are still just fine?

I think I need more shoes..... I have 8 pair, but only 3 or 4 I run in. A pair I've yet to come to love, and 3-4 pair that are retired for walking and yard work.

Hey everyone- For entertainment these last few days of the month- HOW MANY SHOES DO YOU HAVE?
