Close enough to family that I can drove down and stay. Just don't know if it's chip timed....but it is run by a race company, so that helps.
Looks good to me! It says the kid's run isn't timed.
Yeah, that's the only timing mentioned, so I'm assuming timed race. Sent an email asking if it was chip or gun timed.0 -

@MNLittleFinn They are asking for your time so you get placed on the right sector/corral. Don't worry too much.
If you have 1 hour 10k, double it and add around 20-30 minutes to be safe.0 -
The nice thing about summer: even though I get stuck at work longer than planned, there was still enough daylight left to head over to "my" mountain, which is now well and truly free of snow.
And I set a new personal record: largest elevation gain in a run so far! According to Strava, it was more than 500m. I'm not sure if that is correct - there were roughly 380m elevation in one long climb before I decided to turn back around, and maybe another 70m from the smaller hill I looped over to break up the descent on the way down. I think everything else is just artefacts from jumps in Strava's elevation data - there, it looks like the mountain road had little dips every couple hundred meters. In reality it's all one uninterrupted uphill - I'm quite sure of that after running it.
Regardless of whether Stravas total elevation is right or not, this was the longest running climb I did yet. I've run on that route five times since moving here and get a little further every time before my legs start to complain; it's nice to see I am actually getting better at hills.
Still - that blasted mountain road is 11km long with 790m of net elevation gain, so todays 380m weren't even half of it yet. It will take a lot more training until I make it to the top

Might add the Duluth one. I'm signed up for the one in Baldwin in June......Talked my wife into it being an early Father's day gift/weekend visiting family. My mom lives 6 miles from the race.
EDIT: in the past, it was noted as chip timed, so I'd assume it is this time as well.
EDIT2: Thanks for looking @Stoshew71 main reason I didn't jump at the 2 you found was just that they are still during school and the end of the year is crazy time with wrapping up paperwork and such.1 -
Wow @_nikkiwolf_ that is one crazy impressive climb!!!0

Since I'm full of questions after just signing up for 2 more races. I was thinking, I'm looking at 10 weeks of training for the July 4 half, That would start next week. Should I use this week as a cut back to let my foot rest and heal completely before jumping in? Was thinking do 4-4-5-4 instead of the 4-2-4-8-4 I had planned.0

Yes! You don't wanna start training with a pre-existing injury/ache/issue.4 -
Thanks @kristinegift I was really leaning that way, but the stubborn part of me said keep pushing. I'll take tomorrow off and do my Thursday, Saturday and Sunday runs but just do 5 miles on Sat instead of 8. Think that will work, or cut the sun run too? Just as a general thought, How I'm feeling will be a decider too.0

@MNLittleFinn Sunday will probably be a Saturday call depending on how you feel. But hopefully you'll be a-OK by then!0

4/17: 13 miles, long and easy
4/18: 6 miles, easy
4/19: 7 miles total, 3x1 mile repeats @ 5K effort
Total: 121.66 miles
Overview:
Some nice speedwork today! 1.5 mile warm up; 3x1 mile repeats at 5K effort with 1/2 mile recovery between; 1.5 mile cool down. I say 5K “effort” because it was super windy out today (15-20 mph); the 1st and 3rd repeats were faster than 5K pace (7:03 and 6:56) because I had the wind at my back, but the 2nd was substantially slower (7:28) trying to run into the wind haha. Same effort for all 3 though, it’s crazy how much of a difference the wind makes
Races I'm registered for:
04/03 - Shamrock Shuffle (8K) 36:36 - new 8K PR!
04/09 - Chi Town Half Marathon 1:53:11 - took it nice and easy
04/24 - Ravenswood Run (5K)

Was thinking along those lines. I found a decent training plan on Strava that's within my abiity if I tweak a little, and that will Start on Tuesday, so Sunday might just be a rest day....But Saturday will tell.0 -
Boston race report addendum, a day later:
I was really bummed at Boston because I couldn't run all the way and in spite of my training I ran slower than the marathon that I qualified in. I feel a lot better about it now. There is an information void on the race course . . .
Apparently people who were watching TV got told in real time that it was awfully hot, and the elites weren't running as fast as usual, and the runners were suffering the effects of the weather. (If I am characterizing the TV coverage incorrectly, it's because I didn't see it and I'm relying on second- and third-hand descriptions.)
What happened on the course was, it felt warm enough to run in shorts and a singlet. I did not notice it being overly hot, and I did not notice excessive humidity. But the fact that I wasn't aware of it in real time doesn't mean that it didn't affect me.
Things I learned later, some of them after I posted yesterday: Experienced marathon runners I know told me the conditions were tough. More results were available. I looked up some local runners I know. The guy 4 years younger than me who ran Boston last year in 3:00 then beat me by 4 minutes for the 55-59 age group in a half 6 days later ran Boston in 3:12 this year. That's right in the middle of my pre-race goal range, and I know he's a faster distance runner than I am. The way I described it during the period we were in the same age group was, he could have an off day and still beat a PR effort from me.
The top end of my pre-race goal range was 3:15. That would have made top 10 in my age group this year. For reference, I was seeded into Wave 2, Corral 4. There were twenty 60 year old guys seeded into Wave 1, and I didn't count the Wave 1 guys 61-64 years old. I didn't count how many guys in my age group were seeded higher in Wave 2 that me. Top 10 in my age group at Boston is not a realistic expectation, and it's not reasonable to assume that many guys who are faster than me just had a bad day for some reason that wouldn't also affect me.
Then I saw my finish results as 33rd in the age group and 5685th overall. I've heard that a common Boston goal is to beat your bib number, and my bib number was 11935. Um, I had to be faster than a lot of people seeded in Wave 1 to finish 5685. And 33rd is probably higher in my age group than I was seeded.
So today I drove home. I stopped a lot of times, because I need to walk gently and I have trouble sitting still in the driver's seat for extended periods. At most rest stops, I saw other people wearing Boston celebration jackets, many from prior years. (The older the jacket, the higher the status; except 2013 is pretty high status even though it's fairly recent.) Turns out it's a bunch of New Yorkers and Canadians going home, just like me.
The experienced Boston runners said things like, "Everyone ran slower than they expected, maybe 10 minutes slower than the time they qualified with." (I ran 2 minutes and 8 seconds slower than the time I qualified with.) "It was a tough year. I ran slower than I expected, and so did everyone else." (It's good to hear that from someone who has been there several times.) "This is the first marathon I've run with the temperature over 50 degrees." (There's some perspective; the two marathons I ran had somewhat similar weather.)
One of my Facebook friends had a post from his daughter that said something to the effect of, "You crossed the finish line and that's all that matters." So I looked up his time, and it was over 5 hours. He qualified in September at Rochester, running under 3:30 on a tough course. He's done a lot of marathons. A bad day and 4 hours, I'd understand; but 5 hours for him is a total disaster. I'll have to ask him what happened the next time I see him.
So, I guess maybe I really was conditioned pretty well for Boston, and the time didn't reflect it because of adverse conditions that I was too inexperienced to appreciate. I'll have to talk to some more experienced people about that.
Better conditioned or not, I made no attempt to run at all today. Maybe a 3 or 4 mile recovery run tomorrow, but today was a day to travel, put my household back together, and do some emotional assimilation. That last task is nowhere near complete, but I think I have more perspective than I did yesterday.
Boston is not only a bigger event than I expected, it has a bigger emotional impact than I expected.8 -
@MobyCarp I watched the race off and on as the elite men started, I forgot the elite women started earlier. The initial reports, as I remember it, they were saying it was ideal race conditions with temps in the mid-upper 60's, expected highs in the low 70's with a mild breeze. I thought that was a bit warm even for me running a much shorter distance. But, figured maybe humidity was different than what I'm familiar with.
They compared the temps to the L.A Olympic qualifying full. Again, how it was so much better.
It was only once the elites and other athletes begain to drop and lag times were noted from last year or their qualifying races, that the claim of warm temps were hindering the best performances. One elite female droped at the 5 mile mark. The temp was 72 the first time I heard mention of it being warm. The elite men couldn't have been too far out, maybe the last 3-5 miles.
I have one other aquaintance that ran it. Hes fast and young, 28 ish. 6:45-7:00 pace ultras. He finished 3:18-3:23. And he set his Strava run on private (or deleted it). I commented on it, congratulated him. Idk what happened. He wasn't ready/willing to share the details. Probably processing it all.
Seem it was a challenge this year. I believe you were well trained, but then I see all the miles and discipline you share. I've yet to see anyone claim that they had a beast of a run. I'm sure recounts from the elites will be shared soon, if they haven't already.
My dentist ran it too, but I won't see him for a few months. But if I "run" in to him, I'll inquire. He's run it many times.4 -

I totally agree with all of this. To add to it, @MobyCarp You've run Boston (at almost double my age) at a pace I can't do for much shorter distances, and you did it on a day that was Heck for a lot of people. Huge Kudos to you!1 -

According to the MRC you should be able to run a half in 2:23:48. Maybe put down 2:25 to be on the safe side.
But sign up for a 10K man.
Looking for 10Ks already. Problem is driving distance. I'm in the middle of nowhere and it's like a 3 hour drive to most races.
@MNLittleFinn Stop being my running double!
We run similar amounts, distances and times, and I'm 3 hours from most races (plus I don't drive!).
My longest run is 15 km, most recently two weeks ago. I did 10 km in about 1 hr 2 mins on Tuesday. I run 4 times a week. I started running in September 2015.
I'm also dying to do a half, but since I'm probably twice your age, I'm not planning to do one till a nearby one in August (although it's partly a trail run with a section up a small mountain).
I'll be following your progress! Loving your questions and the answers they provoke. Cheers.0 -
