Wow! So many replies and so many ideas, you people are great. I'm going to try and shutotgun all the ideas people posted, rather then do 20 quotes, hope everyone that took the time to reply sees this!

How fast am I trying to loose weight??

As fast as I can, simply put if I stick to my 1700 cal diet, AND I hit the gym 6 days a week, AND I don't cheat with treat foods EVER, then I will loose one pound per week. If I miss any of those I stay the same or will gain weight back. Many of you have looked at what I do and thought I was trying to loose weight fast, but fact of the matter is if I don't HAMMER on myself then I can't loose weight period. Its been this way my whole life.

Why don't you eat foods you like in moderation??

The only foods I like are junk and garbage foods (there is a rat joke in there to be sure!). But the few foods I do enjoy are so bad for a person NO ONE is going to say its OK for me to eat them. At this point I also feel guilt if I eat something like sweets because I have been trying so hard for so long to loose my fat. So one way or another if its food its bad for me.

Why don't you cook food so that it tastes good to you?

Can't be done, you would have to bury the taste of fish and veggies to the point were I could not taste them at all. I used to kill everything I ate with hot sauce, but that ripped my guts up too much. I'm pretty much eating most of my stuff raw/plane these days. I figure if I'm going to hate eating it no matter what then cooking it is a waste of time.

Have you tried any other diets?

Yes, low carb, no carb, vegan diets, liquid diets as well as a number of diet plans that a number of gym trainers have come up with for me. Some were better then others, but none of them worked.

Do you have an eating disorder??

Maybe, for the past ten years I have been eating foods I hate on a regular basis s..was it the chicken or the egg? It might not be a BAD idea to see a shrink about this, but I'm at a loss as to what they could do to make food taste any different to me then it does now. I certainly didn't decide how food tastes to me. The example I give is that I don't like how bacon tastes, and fried chicken makes me sick! I give these examples to show people how messed up my taste buds are!

That's all I got hope that clears a few things up, did I miss any?

The bolded part would be impossible to say because you haven't given an inkling of what you actually do like to eat. But I bet I wouldn't say it was bad or not okay. As far as I'm concerned, there are no bad foods.

I think you're being a bit melodramatic. For weight loss, you just have to eat less calories than your body burns. The type of food doesn't matter. Obviously, you're eating something if you think you need to lose weight, right? Eat what you like, try to get creative with whatever that is so you can meet basic nutritional needs and if you have to use some type of protein or meal replacement drink to fill in some nutritional gaps, do that.

If you fasted on water for a couple of days, do you think your palate might recover?

With my kids, when their palate gets out of whack and they only like really junky stuff, I put them on a "diet" and don't give them anything sweet at all for a few weeks, but you say you have tried this?

If you like beer, have you tried popcorn or grits with nutritional yeast?

Do you like any cheeses or breads?

Is it a texture problem, or just flavors?

I really think you should see your doctor about this. Taste and smell disorders are more common than you might think, and can often be resolved.

Surely it would be worth eliminating any physical causes for your problem?

I agree with the posters that have said that plain foods are probably the issue here. There is no reason why you can't make small tweaks (without sacrificing taste) to recipes or just eat smaller portions of things you really love.

If beer means you are off track, pick a lighter beer or drink less of the beer you like. If you like tacos, make them with corn tortillas and lean meat. A pita or flatbread pizza with low fat cheese is not a big change. Wings baked with cornstarch on a rack make them crispy without frying.

When I met my husband, he loved my chicken/zucchini nuggets off the bat without even knowing they were "healthy" because I cook well. The same goes for everything I make.

My big thing is taking any meal, adding more vegetables into it, and swapping out the ingredients that I know are giving me the highest calorie counts. If you're unsure, check out really great blogs like

I feel like t your calculations may be off a little. You need to eat 1700 calories and gym 6 gauss pet week to lose one pound power week? That would make your TDEE 2200 which seems a little low for a male going to the gym 6 days a week.

That said, I don't understand the statement I hate all healthy food. There is a huge variety of foods that can fit into a healthy diet.

Start by eating foods you enjoy in smaller portions so that you stay within your calories. If it doesn't keep you feeling full all day, try subbing in something a little lower in calories.

And it doesn't have to be tasteless food. My lunch tomorrow is shredded chicken with buffalo sauce, cream cheese, and blue cheese dressing. I add volume by mixing in green beans. They add crunch, but it still just pretty much tastes like buffalo sauce.

And there are hundreds of vegetables and ways to prepare them. This does not sound like you not liking a flavor, this sounds like you mentally not liking any food you eat because you have given out some arbitrary designation as "healthy".

OP, do you take metformin in relation to your diabetes? One of the possible side-effects of that medication is disruption of taste... Can be a metallic or bitter taste all the time.

It sounds like a sensory thing to me as well. My 18 yr old can not handle certain textures. Sounds like yours is taste rather than texture.
Other than junk food, what DO you like? Lets try to work from there.

You can live on Ensure drinks for a long time. They are considered meal replacement for some people. They are not cheap but I like the taste.

So OP, since this has been going on for a while, what HAVE you tried? What specialists have you seen, what did your dr say when you mentioned your concerns? If you are saying you have been struggling for ever with weight issues, and texture/smell aversions, and yet have never discussed this with a professional (or multiple ones), then this makes very little sense to me. Unless there is something else going on. To be honest, I would start with a psychiatrist (no, they are not just for "crazy" people).

OP, I don't even understand your question. There's literally millions of foods to choose from. You don't like chicken? Sure, don't eat chicken. There's beef, pork, fish, other seafood. Or there's cheese and other dairy, or even tofu, quorn and other protein substitutes. You don't like steamed vegetables? OK, but how about soups, stews, curries, stir-fries? Mexican? Chinese? Indian? Caribbean? The world is your oyster.
You said you liked your food spicy - great, eat spicy food you like!
Maintaining and losing weight really is all about the quantities of food you eat, not the type.

Why don't you set yourself a goal of trying one new food item or dish every week?

And why don't you want to tell us more about foods you actually do like to eat? Bread, cheese, spicy sauce...? Surely there's more.

Sadly no I have fasted for 3 days and I have not seen any effect.

Food is BOTH a texture problem AND a flavor problem for me. It just depends on what it is. The worst for me is chicken the texture, flavor, and smell make me....well...yea its not good.

I used to like bread and cheese, but I gave them up years ago to cut out fats and carbs. MAYBE I should let them back in? I'm not sure anymore its been years.

The popcorn idea sounds like a winner, I plan on giving that one a try, thank you.

I was thinking about this thread last night and first I would ask why did you give up the only foods that you will eat, even though together they provide protein and fiber? By all means add them back and maybe add a multi to make sure you are getting your proper nutrients. Also you said you pretty much only like beer and candy (or those are the only things you listed) what about fruit? Bananas, berries, star fruit (that tastes completely different than you would think if you haven't tried it) - the sweeter fruits. Also, I agree with everything mlinci posted just above me.

    Good luck!

Unless I missed it, I don't think you really answered the question about: "Food that tastes good IS bad for me, all of it, period."

What food tastes good to you?

    We have bread and cheese.

Even something like Soylent is food, of course.

There have been a few posts on this before with people who have problems with texture, so I understand that's an issue, it's actually called Sensory Processing Disorder, which probably doesn't help you trying to eat, though forcing yourself to eat it doesn't seem to make it easier over time. A bunch of people have mentioned soylent, have you looked into that? Since you're changing the way you eat, think about incorporating bread and cheese back in, obviously in moderation. Besides beer though, what else? Peanut butter? Mashed potatoes? Rice? Waffles? Yogurt?

I would NOT stop taking your metformin, that is what helps keep your A1C in check, without it you could be seeing far worse issues. Talk to your Dr to see if they can suggest something else. If you really do have ASPD it may not be the medicine.

I think I understand where you're coming from. Earlier times when I tried to lose weight, it was the food I was "supposed" to eat that really turned me off and I would fail every time. "Healthy" is a subjective term and the key to weight loss is finding foods that you like that you are willing to eat to keep you in a calorie deficit, while meeting nutritional needs. For me, those kinds of foods are cereal, sandwiches, pizza, tacos, hamburgers, pasta and things like that. I have not changed the foods I used to eat at all, I simply changed how much of them I eat. I look where I can cut calories, like I'll I use less oil and butter and use sriracha on my burgers and salsa on my tacos instead of mayo or a lot of cheese (but a little cheese!) Little things like that make a huge difference. I happen to like some vegetables, so I do a roasted mix of broccoli, carrots, zucchini, onion and celery. Instead of french fries, I roast fries with a little oil and Parmesan cheese or seasoning salt. I find hot cereal to be filling for the amount of calories the have and I sweeten with splenda or flavored sugar-free coffee creamers. Find things you do like and make those your fuel. You won't be successful if you're miserable and think you need to eat gross food. Soylent sounds absolutely dreadful, but I'm not against some type of protein & fruit smoothie--I love those.

If someone told me I had to eat a baked salmon covered in mushrooms and avocado slices with a kale and cilantro salad on the side, I'd tell them to grab a fork and enjoy 'cause there's no way in hell any of those things are touching my lips. ;)

^^^ This. Except for the part about the salmon covered in mushrooms and avocado slices. That sounds delish. Someone else can have my serving of the kale and cilantro salad, though.

I have tried many things actually, as far as diets I have tried vegan, liquid, low carb, South beach and a few others.

I have talked to my doctor about this, he has put me on a few different anti anxiety medications, no real results though. I'm also going to stop taking Metformin because bad taste is a side effect that a poster here just pointed out, thanks to that person even though I can't remember the name at the moment! (sorry!!)

I have seen three different nutritionalists and they have put me on various diets, the liquid diet was because of the 2nd one I saw.

I have also sen 3 different personal trainers who have given me diets to try as well. Most of them just tell me to "man up!! Stop being a whiner!!" when I tell them I can't eat what I'm supposed to eat.

I guess that's why I'm in this state, after all this stuff and all these years I just don't see food ever really working for me. I KNOW that sounds crazy, but again I have no idea what else to even think at this point.

Did a psychiatrist prescribe antidepressants? If not, you need an appointment with a psychiatrist and a diagnosis. If yes, what happened when you saw no results and what was your diagnosis?

I used beer and candy as examples of things I do enjoy eating....that a person can't really make a good diet out of. Those things are treats at best. I pulled those out because I thought they made great examples of "bad" Junk food.

As far as other foods I CAN eat a few things like cheese and bread...but I certainly don't like to eat them.

One step down we have things like fish, vegtables, ALL fruit, which I hate..but I CAN eat, if I force it down (I'll swallow blue berries like pills for example)

and at the bottom are things like poultry, things that I can't eat no matter how hard I try to force myself.

That's what got me started with the thought of "I need something besides food." A healthy diet for me is foods I hate with a side order of foods that are meh. I can only do that so many days.

How does one who hates food, or at least the food he can eat, need to lose weight? I would assume that you would eat just the minimum to survive and not enough to gain weight?

Some more great points! Allow me to elaborate.

I guess I should have picked my words better, but the 1700 calorie and 6 days a week at the gym WAS the only thing that worked for me in the past. I used to weigh 279 pounds, now I'm down to 204. Maybe I should have said this is what worked in the past...which is why I'm still looking to it now. I expect the pounds to come off slower as I get smaller, but I have been stuck around 205 for months and months now, AND after years of eating food I hate, its time for change, can't do it anymore.

The only foods I like these days is straight up junk food, its why I never bothered to list any, I can't imagine anyone telling me its OK for me to drink beer, or eat candy. In moderation?? Maybe, I have never been able to make that work in the past, so I cut them out all together. Point being that I need an alternative to "real" food, nutrition, fuel, etc..

Am I melodramatic?? YES I AM!! I'll do my best to keep it to a minimum, but yea I'm a drama queen most days.

I'm 35, male, and I'm a diesel mechanic by trade so my activity rate is pretty high. But 1700 seems to be the magic number, I have tried diets at 2500 and 2000...didn't work.

Keep the hits coming folks I'm reading them all.

Sounds weird, but might there be fumes and stuff at your job that are throwing off your sense of smell or taste permanently? It actually might be something to consider.

Do you like burgers or pizza? Or do you literally only eat candy and beer?
