Yay, found a Weightloss shake made with REAL sugar!

I guess I'll use the tried-and-true, Carnation Breakfast Essentials (formerly "Instant Breakfast"). Use the powder packets, though. Not sure about the sweetener in the bottled kind. Just read the label & educate yourself.

To jessef593: it's gotta work compared to the way I ate before. It was out of control, no boundaries whatsoever. This way, I'll take the time to make the shake with ice in blender, which is filling. We'll see, I've only been "shaking" since April 8th.0

No, like I mean the shake will have absolutely no affect towards weightloss unless you're in a calorie deficit. That's truly all that matters. Trust me, I cut weight 2-3x a year as a hobby.2

I love the Carnation Breakfasts! I recently started using the Herbalife shakes too and from what I can find at first glance, I don't think that they have either of the sweeteners that you are avoiding. The trick is to find something that you enjoy so that you can stick to it. I love the variety that Herbalife offers. I think that it is something that I will be able to incorporate long term so when people start the "shake hating" and "do you plan to do it forever" my answer is, yea maybe I do. lol Good luck in finding the one that fits for you. As long as you are making a good choice for you then ignore the haters!2

Herbalife contains ace-k which is a cousin of aspartame and in large doses is a neurotoxin. Herbalife also has been link to numerous cases of liver irritation, some of which cause permanent liver damage. Not exactly a product someone would want to consume if they are trying to stay away from artificial ingredients/sweetners.8 -

@PattyBanzhof1 I am still curious as to how these shakes are going to magically cure your weight gain problem. If you could fill me in it would be greatly appreciated. Especially since I've managed to gain weight on these supposed "weightloss shakes". It intrigues me that you continue to avoid giving any evidence on how these shakes actually result in weightloss.

Nice pic by the way!!! Looks like whatever you're doing, it's obviously working!!! I can see the 6pack abs, even in the tiny pic. I feel the slimfast SHAKE is working, and will continue to work, due to the fact compared to the way I was eating, which was out of control, no self-discipline, this is more of a controlled method. It happened to be on sale at my local dented can outlet, and thought OK, I'll give it a whirl!!!besides, it was $2.25/can, so it's not like I went into debt to begin this regimen. It of course, takes commitment, and measuring, etc. So I'll try this for awhile, if it's not working like it should, I'll simply go back to eating real food for brkfst and lunch, but simply measure out portions, etc.. That might be the key, portion control. Hope this answered your ?. Good day!!!2 -
@PattyBanzhof1 Do you "feel" it's working, or is it actually working. Did you weigh yourself before and after? Have you actually attempted more modest eating habits? A shake is not a silver bullet and you'll more than likely rebound since a mostly liquid diet is sustainable in the long run.3

I only repeat this here because I agree with you that is important to educate ourselves on health hazards.
This website that the OP also attempted to cite says ACE K is okay.
This source says ACE K is okay.
The Mayo Clinic is okay with sweeteners.
The FDA, the WHO, the UN's FAO are all okay with artificial sweeteners.3 -
Why do so many people sound angry on here? Relax people! It's just a shake! Tastes good, filling for some people, a set number of calories, offers more nutrition than chocolate milk. She likes it. No big deal.7

There is no such thing as weight loss shake. Its a marketing scam. People hear the phrase and think it has some weight to it. It does not. Weight loss occurs when you are in a calorie deficit. That's it. A shake does not put you into a calorie deficit.
Really not sure why anyone would be excited to add more sugar into their diet.3 -
Patty, I love that you are keeping it positive, even with the haters!! It's great that you have found a shake that is working for you. I used to have a shake for breakfast every morning. It's convenient, quick and fit in my diet. Now, I have switched it up and will grab one when I need one. I have never tried the carnation, but maybe I will give it a shot.

Amfmmama: The carnation powder is OK, but the downside is it doesn't blend well with ice, like in slimfast. It gets watery fast, and if you add too much ice to blender, the flavor of your powder will disappear. Find it mixes very well with 2 tbsp.creamy peanut butter, especially the milk chocolate flavor powder, and use a little less ice. I found this method on Livestrong.com. it's nice, too, because it contains vitamins, and is convenient in the packet form, ESP when you gotta take it to work. Also waiting for small pack of chocolate protein powder from Nutrisystem on ebay, which is made with Sucralose. Kinda weary of this, but, it got fantastic reviews on many sites related to this Nutrisystem protein shake. So we'll see. Hope it tastes decent.
Pearblossom: rather have real sugar in my food/drinks/diet shakes, than the artificial crap-sweeteners. I'm just one of those sensitive people that respond differently to certain ingredients, and by golly, ASPARTAME is one of them. If I have diet ice tea or SF jello just once a day X a few days, I will get debilitating headaches!!! Lasting day into night. No fun. So that's why I stay away from it, and try to avoid it if I can. Never had a reaction to real sugar, I just have to be more aware of how much sugar per serving, etc., and not overdo it with sugar. Yeah, I know it don't help when it comes to weightloss, but slimfast is helping greatly with my portion control, which currently, is a real, big problem. Rather drink slimfast, than eat bread w/PB & J, which is turning into ALOT of sugar, anywayanyway, and then I wind up feeling real tired and no energy later in the day. Since I began slimfast, I have alot more energy, and dont get that horrible, cranky, sleepy mode at 5 - 6:30 PM anymore. Gotta stay awake and be in a nice mood when I help get child ready for bed. Rather not be a monster mom when I spend time with my child. I get bloated real bad with breads, and I find slimfast is slowly helping with belly bloat, too!!! Rught now, real belly bloat cuz i had 2 slices of excellent italian bread with dinner. Oh was it good, but it really shot up my calorie count for today. Thanks and have a nice evening to all! Looking forward to tomorrow, another day of making positive strides toward this weight-loss and healthy lifestyle "journey".3 -
@PattyBanzhof1 Have you considered making your own smoothie? This is what I do, and have perfect control of what I put in there, as well as the macros.4

My god it was mind boggling to read the continuing harassment. Artificial sweeteners are in no way shape or form good for anyone. The ARTIFICIAL in the name is the clue here people. If you want to put that chemically created crap into your body by all means do so. I also have issues with them but mine are bladder related. Hubby gave up diet soda and dropped 10 pounds with no other changes. Again, glad you found something that works for you! Stay classy Patty and good luck on your journey.1

I say this with absolutely no malice or "harassment" intended, but I'm not sure you understand chemicals. You are chemical crap. Water is chemical crap. Salt is chemical crap. Baking soda is chemical crap. A stick of wood is chemical crap. Everything is a chemical. Man made, artificial... it doesn't matter. It's made out of the same elements. Hemlock is natural, I'm still not putting it in a smoothie.
This is why sources and definitions are important. Anyone can claim anything with any buzz word and be utterly, utterly wrong. I will repost a list of things that people on MFP have said will prevent weight loss and/or cause cancer and other health problems:
Artificial sweeteners
Natural sweeteners
Sugar but not honey or maple syrup
GMO fruits and vegetables
non-organic fruits and vegetables
organic fruits and vegetables that have harsh organic pesticides
bananas of all types
potatoes (but not sweet potatoes)
sweet potatoes
Any produce not bought at a farmer's market
all meats
fatty meats
red meats (but sometimes grass-fed beef is okay)
chicken (but sometimes cage free is okay)
milk
all dairy
some dairy
tofu
eggs
canned tuna
ocean fish
fish from farms
overly processed foods
processed foods
foods that aren't "clean" (with no clear definition of "clean")
gluten
carbs both "good" and "bad"
grains (unless they're whole grain)
"white" foods
For most people with no health conditions these things are fine.

Some people are so rude and obnoxious and make these one size fits all statements. You can't possibly, it's not possible, there's no way..... My mother drilled into me when I was little, "If you do not have something nice to say Michele, DO NOT SAY ANYTHING at all." This is sound advice I am passing along.

Sometimes I can see some water weight retention if I drink a bunch of diet soda the day before (like 2-3cans), which falls off the next day if I don't drink any. But it's definitely anecdotal, could be all kinds of crap.
