When I eat Mexican food out I usually order the fish tacos about 100 calories per Taco. I also skip the rice and refried beans and ask for black beans on the side

Log it, but if it's a every week thing, learn to make it fit in your calories, or decrease your goal for the rest of the week to make it fit.

Corn torillas (not fried) have only 50 cals and salsa isn't so bad either. I usually use the rice and beans as a condiment and make my own tacos with fajita meat. Easy on the cheese and heavy on the lettuce. I don't care for sour cream, fortunately :)

Over the past 10 months Ive lost over 30 pounds and am now on maintenance/ recomp, and eating at a mexican restaraunt is a regular occurance for me (at least twice a month). I also drink lots of sugary margaritas while I'm there :)

My strategy is to go easy on the chips, and share an entree with my boyfriend. We usually get some sort of grilled chicken dish that includes rice, cheese sauce (my weakness), and sauteed veggies and peppers. I steer clear of sour cream and refried beans.

If we are both very hungry we will occasionally split an a la carte veggie quesadilla also. Find whatever works for you!

For logging, I would suggest finding your best guess entry, but not stress about it. Or, use it as a logging break if the rest of your week is pretty accurate and under deficit.

If it's a little hole in the wall place, I would take in a bag of baked Tostitos scoops and ask them if it's cool if you eat them. I would even ask them to put them in a basket. But that is me, I am pushy like that.

Have a fun Mexican food night out.

It's not cool. In my state you would be thrown out of the restaurant. State health district regulations forbid any food be brought into restaurants from outside. Even when my kids and grandkids were babies we couldn't feed them Cheerios from bags that we'd brought (formula and breast milk were exceptions, of course.)

I just went through this! Here's my opinion: look up your meal beforehand on this app and see how many calories and macros are in it. The good thing about Mexican is if you get spices or peppers, they speed up your metabolism. I'd make sure to get black beans, and brown rice if you can. Cheese is bad for you, so if you can, take that off. Do not get anything fried. And when you get your meal, take half of it home. Also beware, restaurants serve food with an insanely high amount of sodium in them! Guacamole can be good, but it might depend on the place. Be careful to get a lower sodium, and less fatty meat if that's what you are going for. I'd stay away from chips.

How do spices speed up your metabolism and why is cheese bad for you?

You make smart choices. I would order a taco salad without the shell so I could have a few chips and salsa. Ask for sour cream on the side so you can better control portions.

And if you can't keep it together at a restaurant do Mexican night at home where you control everything.

Where do you go that the fish tacos are only 100 calories each? Most tortillas shells are over 100 calories by themselves without any filling.

Honestly asking, because if this is a real thing I will be in heaven. Fish tacos are one of my loves in life.

If a fish taco is made with grilled fish and corn (not flour) tortillas, I can imagine that it stays in the 100 calorie range. Depends on the sauce.

So tonight I'm going out to eat to this really amazing Mexican restaurant. It's going to be VERY hard to stay within my calorie limit, so I'm asking for advice,,. I only have about 800 calories left of the day so i KNOW I'm going to go over my limit. Between the chips, salsa, guacamole, and my entree which will probably be enchiladas, I bet I'll hit 1000 calories no matter how little I eat. Do you think I should just totally skip logging my dinner and just try to moderate how much I eat? How do you think I should go about this?? Not only am I asking logging advice but I'm also looking for advice about what to do when you go to restaurants!!!!!!

Plan ahead, if I was going to the restaurant I would have all my calories for the day available

My hubby and I used to frequent Mexican restaurants, it's one of our very favorite cuisines. In the past months, while changing our habits to make more healthy decisions, I ended up learning how to cook all of my favorite things. I hadn't really set out to do that, it just happened once I realized that I love deciding all of the ingredients in my food, and also love eating delicious things every time I have eat.

I'm definitely not a chef, but it's been a lot more fun than I anticipated, figuring out how to make things "from scratch." This resulted in a weekly (seriously delicious black bean & chickpea tacquitos that end up around 100 calories each, plus homemade guac on the side) Mexican night here at home, and we make the "going out" part happen after dinner and dessert, with a lovely long walk in a beautiful park.

We do still go to restaurants occasionally, although we are now far more discerning about our choices, and sometimes even end up telling each other that we'd rather have made our own. Never thought I'd enjoy the kitchen so much!

The small street-style tacos are about this much per taco depending on fillings. 4-5" soft corn tortilla, 2 oz grilled fish, pickled veg and some kind of pico or chili pepper condiment would be around 100 cals. You usually get 3-4 of these in a serving at a restaurant.

I am from Texas and we eat at tex-mex restaurants almost every week. Here is what I do:
    1. Ask for corn tortillas. they are NOT fried and about 50 cals per. I eat Guacamole and salsa with corn tortillas, no chips. I try to go light on the salsa and more on the guacamole. More calories in guacamole, but the nutritional benefits from the avocados are great.
    2. My wife and I will split fajitas for one or an enchilada combo. 1/2 order is, well..., 1/2 the calories. If we have fajitas, I generally eat only one with the tortilla (corn, not flour) and the rest I eat without.
    3. I skip the rice or substitute the rice for charro beans because I never seem to get enough protein. Refried beans also are not too bad for the calories.

I also skip the alcohol, unless it has been a bad week.

Meh-- splurging once per week isn't going to make or break anything! Enjoy. :)

It totally can for me. If I'm trying to lose .5 pounds per week (at my weight, that's a reasonable rate), then I need to make a 1750 calorie deficit. Can you eat that much in Mexican food? I easily could.

OP has some great suggestions here. Don't be scared, just try some of the swaps suggested and log as best an estimate as you can.

That's a huge bummer! I can lose weight having a "free" day once per week. I have been successful a few times with it in the past (most notably, -60 lbs in my 20's and -30 lbs a few years ago.) Back in my 20's I was eating 1500 cals/day (except on "free" day) and a few years ago, I was eating around 1800/day (except on "free" day.) I am bigger than ever now though (after 2 kids) and plan to just have a "free" MEAL once per week that I don't freak out about. I don't do well with deprivation. To each their own though-- everyone should do what works for them!

I never deprive myself of anything. I still eat Mexican food, but I can't imagine being able to successfully maintain my weight loss -- let alone lose weight in the first place -- if I splurged and ate whatever I wanted once a week. To put it in context, my typical order at a Mexican place would be vegetable fajitas without cheese. With the rice and beans, I estimate that's about 1,150 calories. I could easily eat all of that. Add chips and salsa and a couple of drinks (which I would do if I was splurging) would make it really hard for me to maintain my weight if I ate it regularly. And if it was in the context of a free day (where I'm eating whatever I want, as much as I want) including another high calorie breakfast and lunch . . . nope, wouldn't work for me and probably wouldn't work for many people, especially those with smaller deficits.

What *does* work for me is ordering what I want and eating *part* of it. Now I would have some chips and salsa, but I would count out the chips. I would probably skip the rice because I don't enjoy it that much and I would decide how much to eat of everything else based on my calorie goal for the day.

I eat the real things, log, and lose. I would never do this for a wide variety of reasons. If you don't go crazy, the chips are not that bad at all!

No one has suggested tacos; but I find that soft shelled tacos can be a nice option.

Do you go out to eat often or is this a rare thing? If you go often you'll want to be more careful about logging. If it is a rare thing just add what you can or do quick adds and drink some extra water tomorrow (to flush out all the extra sodium you'l have tonight).

We have a tradition of going to a Mexican restaurant every Friday!!

Since you go often, why not mix it up. I will do a taco salad with salsa instead of dressing (and no sour cream because I'm not a fan). It's about 500-600 calories with chicken, and if it's in a fried shell, I'll add another 200ish calories.

Or fajitas with no tortillas (or if you want tortillas, go with corn). And street tacos are really good (meat, a little queso fresco, a fresh squeezed lime, and a corn tortilla).

    Please don't do this.

Agreed. That's pretty horrible. At that point, just stay home; invite your friends to your house where you can control everything you eat.
