Low Carb Newbie

Hi all. Thought I'd post in here to see if I can get any tips!

I'm starting the low carb diet tomorrow. I have a general idea. Now, my main goal is ketosis. But I've read a few mixed things. I've seen people say they eat 50G carbs and 20g carbs... I want to make sure my first week I do all that is possible to successfully reach ketosis.

Does anyone have any information or a blog/website that lays it all out there?

Also- any other tips for this low carb diet would be great. I've joined about 3 groups in FB for recipes etc.

~Tia~ :)

Welcome @AshleyHyatt . I eat at just under 50 grams of carbs daily for pain management since late 2014. I have had Ankylosing Spondylitis for over 40 years and eating LCHF is the only thing that has managed my pain well and without the negative side effects of Rx Meds in my case.

I get a lot of help from the MFP group below.

If getting into ketosis is your goal, you will have to watch your protein intake as well. Excess protein (amino acids) will be converted to glucose. I'm sure there are low carbers with far greater knowledge them me to know for sure...

Hi, Ashley! Suggestions and your results will all depend on the type of low carb woe you are planning to do as there are quite a few. As J72Fit said there are other things that affect reaching ketosis successfully.

I'm Keto so I do HFLC and try to keep my carbs around 20-30. Honestly, most days are < 20g. There are others like Gale above who are able to do higher carbs and then some even higher than that.

Good luck! I have had great success and hope you do too.

I second the below forum as we are very supportive and there is lots of information for whichever low carb woe you choose.

I'm in ketosis too, and have been for about a year. It's fairly easy to eat that way as long as you embrace fats and skip or limit foods with higher carb contents (usually sugar added foods, baked goods, fruits and starchy veggies).

I usually don't cook special for low carb; I just alter the meals. When I BBQ, I'll just have the steak with some veggies or a salad and skip the potato. If we have tacos, I'll have the ground beef, cheese, sour cream and avaocado, and maybe some lettuce. I skip the taco shell and refried beans. Tonight I am grilling burgers; I will skip the bun and corn but eat the patty, cheese, and some celery with cream heese in it.

Low carb books are nice for ideas but not really needed unless you are looking for substitute dishes like muffins made from coconut flour instead of regular flour, or soul bread instead of regular bread, or mashed cauliflower instead of mashed potatoes. I find it easier to eat normal foods and skip most substitutes.

Ditto the others about the Low Carber Daily group. they're a great bunch.
