Hello everyone!
How are you today? Well I hope x3. I am looking for some advice that leaves me rather confused and troubled at the moment.
I recently saw a nutritionist that informed me to eat between 9-12 carbs per day, because individuals who have diabetes need to monitor their glucose.
I am not diabetic which I found out yesterday but at the same time I come from a family that is prone to diabetes, in addition I am obese and don't want to acquire diabetes. Therefore, I am high risk.
On the flip side I am aiming to exercise 30+minutes a day, am 5 foot 5 and have a large frame I wonder whether or not I need to consume more carbs or fats because of the amount of exercise I do and am endeavoring to lose weight and eventually build muscle...Advice please?

As a bicyclist, I find I don't need to eat on my bike rides except for the ones that go longer than three hours. Now (1) I don't know what you're doing for exercise, (2) everyone is different, (3) it took me time to work up to that, (4) you shouldn't take medical advice from strangers on the internet, and (5) you know your situation much better than I do, but my feeling is that to exercise for half an hour a day, you won't need to second guess your nutritionist. But pay attention to how your body feels.
Exercise makes your body more sensitive to insulin, so you should definitely do it.0 -

9 to 12 carbs? What does that mean??? Portions? Grams? Pounds?1 -
I am probably one of the few people on my dad's side who currently does not have diabetes. In his generation they all do or did and both grandparents did. I did however have gestational diabetes with both pregnancies and was basically put on low carb through both. Only time I could lose weight as I have pcos. That being said I don't think either nutritionist I saw ( even the one a couple years ago) recommended that low of carbs. But if it works for you and you still have energy I guess they know what they are doing. I am watching my carb intake in addition to calories (trying to keep it reasonable) with more success some days than others.0

BTW carbs don't build muscle, protein does. Are you sure she didn't mean 9-12 grams of carbs per meal?1

Perhaps you can ask for a second opinion with a Registered Dietician? Seriously, there is a BIG difference. You can become a nutritionist online.0 -

There is a difference. I referred to nutritionist in my post but the one I last saw was a dietician. It does make a difference.0 -
That's what I'm thinking, that I will need to arrange an appointment with a dietician.0

Forget everything he told you. Drop it from your mind. When you see a registered dietician, you will get a better explanation of why certain things will work for you.
For now, the best way to avoid diabetes is to lose weight.

1 unit of carbs is typically 15g. 9-12 carbs sounds a bit right (lowish side) for what diabetes educators preach these days. When I had gestational diabetes they had me eating 17 carbs per day... and taking insulin...0
