Confused about lentils!

I'm trying to get more nutrients out of my food, and looking at lentils, which I've never used before. I have some red ones here, but the back of the pack is unclear. It says 83 calories and 6.1g protein per serving (80g), but is that raw or cooked?! I checked the MFP database and the numbers input by others are all over the place!
Can anyone give me a brief lesson on lentils, serving sizes, or if there's a best type nutritionally? I'm mainly looking to use them to reduce carbs and calories and increase protein, giving me more calories elsewhere to work in more healthy snacks and veg etc.
Thanks!
