So i am kinda following a low carb atkins diet but the calories are adding up more then i use to eat.. Is this ok for me to still lose weight. I am female, 5'1, 27 and 194 pounds. Atkins wants me to eat about 20-25 carbs but my meals are adding up to 1500 calories or more.. I was tracking calories and trying to stay at 1300 calories a day before Atkins.

My honest advice? Go with the calories allotted here at MFP. Unless you have health issues or strict nutritional goals, you don't have to go low carb. You lose and gain based on caloric intake.

All I know is that you have to be in a caloric deficit to lose weight- so you have to figure out what amount is a deficit for you- usually mfp figures it out for you according to the amount that you state that you want to lose-.5 lb, 1lb or 2lb etc.

At 194, your maintenance is almost certainly over 1,500. If Atkins with a higher limit is easier for you to stick with than unrestricted low-cal and a lower limit, go for it. Adherence is going to make more difference than theoretical calorie counts.

Low carb eating helps curb your hunger so that you can eat fewer calories and stay satisfied. In the beginning, many do not worry about calories, just carbs, either net carbs or total carbs. As you get closer to goal, calories counts start to matter more. Everyone is different. If you are interested in Atkins, try it for a week or two, following their plan, and see how your body reacts and you will have your answer.

If you want to learn more, there is a good group of low carbers at http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/394-low-carber-daily-forum-the-lcd-group

    Good luck!

Cut back your portion sizes and you reduce the calories. Atkins isn't so prescriptive as to determine your calories.
