Back to my 4:30am run. Since I haven't done it since May I felt a little nervous around this one part that goes by woods (bears!) but it was fine. Was already 81 and 89% humidity, but oh well. I just went 4 miles because I am going to spinning this evening. I can't wait till it cools down some (basically in November here), because I can tell I have improved with these brutal heat runs.

    7/1 - 5.23 miles in Washington
    7/2 - 3.7 miles in Washington
7/3 - flying home all day - no running.
    7/4 - :disappointed: couldn’t ride today.
7/5 - 4.5 miles in the Florida heat and humidity.
    7/6 - 5 miles!
    7/7 - 4.2 miles + 1 hour spinning class
    7/8 - strength training - cancelled — rest day
    7/9 - 34 mile bike ride
    7/10 -35 miles biking
    7/11 - 5 mile run + strength training
    7/12 - 5 mile run
    7/13 - 4 miles
    7/14 - 4.3 miles
    7/15 - 4.5 miles
    7/16 - 41 miles biking
7/17 - rest day and driving 12 hours
    7/18 - 5 miles
    7/19 - 5.3 miles - intervals
    7/20 - 7 miles

    7/22 - 4 miles in NYC - Astoria
    7/23 - 6.4 miles in NYC - Astoria
    7/24 - 6.4 miles Central Park, NYC
    7/25 - 5 miles - Goal!
    7/26 - rest day/traveling
    7/27 - rest
    7/28 - 4 miles + spinning class

    .......: Group run tonight!

5.25 miles of marathon pace with my Thursday tempo buddy, then the last 1.35 was all uphill so we used that as a cool down. For these runs in the summer, I just want to pace sub-8, and I managed to squeak out a 7:58 overall: 8:01 (slow .2 to the meet-up spot), 7:46, 7:58, 8:12, 7:53. After that 8:12 we paused for a minute because my right glute was really sleepy. I stood in the towpath and did butt clenches, and the next mile felt much easier and was significantly faster. The sub-8s are starting to feel a bit easier now, so now I just have to master tow path/cinder path running at that pace!

PS: To my Oiselle fan ladies out there! I bought a Flyte tank and took it for a spin today and oh my goodness... it was soft and light and even though I was drenched and literally dripping with sweat, the tank wasn't heavy and despite being light blue wasn't any more see-through than when I left. Not sure I'd pay the $44 list price because I'm frugal (read: a cheapskate), but if you can find one discounted, scoop it up!

    July Mile goal: 114.06/70

Actual goal: Run the Red White and Boom HM well, recover well, run the Park Point 5 Mile (5 mile PR!) and begin training for September Boundary Waters Bank HM.

Today's notes: Today was the first day that I really deviated from the plan I'm following. This week, the plan called for 2-3X2mile Tempo Intervals. I really wasn't feeling like pushing on those, so I made a switch. Today's run looked like this:

    15 min @ 11:00 Warm Up
    40min @ 9:07 average (splits were actually: 9:05, 9:08, 9:07, 9:04 and 9:10 for the last 0.3mi to finish the 40min)
    15min @ 11:00 Cool Down

This was a relatively flat run with just 108 feet of elevation over the course of it, so I thought it would be a good course for trying this faster paced running. The running seemed pretty easy, and I even had to remind myself to slow down... (pace range was SOPPOSED to be 9:08-9:32). Average HR was 151, and max HR was 165 but I felt really good running the whole time. I probably could have run another 10-20 minutes at the pace I was going.

I can actually say that I LOVED this workout. I am seriously thinking about just throwing out all the tempo/cruise interval runs in the schedule and just running Steady State or Tempo Runs for my Thursday runs from here on out.

My legs had a lot of bad things to say about me this morning after torching them with yesterdays hard session. That was probably the hardest running session I've done since my last Half Marathon in early May. I was finally able to get out the door a little after 6 am and get in a super easy recovery run of 5 miles. As long as I complete the next 3 runs of 11 Friday, 6 Saturday & 20 Sunday I'll easily get to my goal and break 300 miles in a month for the first time.

Wow, excellent runs everyone (too many to tag, so forgive me for not doing so), and thank you for the support!

Today's run was okay at first, but then my monthly visitor decided it was time to make an appearance by slugging me with huge menstrual cramps 3/4 of the way in. I had to stop as I was in massive pain for a few mins. Once it passed, I just slowed my pace and I was hit with more waves of cramps, but at least they were not as severe as the first one. I've now taken my meds and I hope they kick in soon. Otherwise, I'll have to head home and bundle up under a heating pad for the day.

I have a feeling I'll be walking the rest of the month until I'm done. Three more to go before my surgery in November, I can't wait!!!

Thanks everyone for the charity miles and support. @Orphia I have nothing better to do than hang out here. Running is all I have. That's a good thing. and excellent company.

Edit- just checked the post. He said "'mo miles coming soon!" Yea! Was afraid we lost him the way of the wolf.

Skip's plan called for 4 easy miles so we ran together. I needed to have a cut back week so this is working perfect.

So......my lower leg hurts (right)..... and I can't quite pinpoint what it is. My calf has been pretty cranky all month and I often stop to stretch it in my first mile. I'm almost positive I pulled/strained my calf trying to pull off a stupid shoe that was stuck on my foot. True story ;) These Saucony shoes I wear for everyday/work are ridiculously difficult to get off. One day I had a sharp pain in that calf trying to pull the shoe off and since then I use my hands to pull the shoes off instead of using one shoe to pull off the other.

Anyway! Tuesday night after I was sitting awhile I had bad pain in the lower leg and then I ran Wednesday morning and the leg bothered me all day after that. Walking feels okay mostly and I've stretched and rolled the heck out of it. Doesn't seem to hurt to touch it anywhere. But it feels like more than a sore calf. It's more like my whole lower leg now and it hurts with impact.

So I may take tomorrow as another rest day from running and then see if I can finish out my 10 miles Sat/Sun. If not, it's okay, but either way, some time off is coming. I want to feel great when the weather cools off and be ready to enjoy running.

@Elise4270 You are the only person I'd say this to, but..... GET A LIFE! Hehe. Just kidding. You've been a trooper about not getting to run.

    @WhatMeRunning We miss you!!!!

@mbaker566 Sweet deal on the Garmin upgrade :)

@karllundy 2 runs in a row! You must be feeling much better.

    @5512bf HOLY MOLY - that's a lotta miles.

    @MNLittleFinn Nice workout :)

@Elise4270, I do exactly the same when I can't run for any reason, and basically just sit around for hours reading articles about running on the internet or browsing for races I can run in the future. I reckon it's good for you, it keeps that running habit and passion going in your mind so you're excited to get back to it rather than dreading it.

@TattooedDolphinGirl78 Sounds like my worst nightmare on a run, I get completely derailed by them too. I hope you can ride it out over the next few days.

    2nd July - 6.04 miles
    5th July - 10.05 miles

Got in 10 more miles with a faster friend this morning. Did the first 6 outside in the heat/humidity, but finished up the last 4 on the treadmill as it was starting to rain and we were near our common gym. Still wavering on trying to get in my first pre-Chicago 20 miler tomorrow before flying back to Florida, as I haven't had a rest day since my 18.3 mile run on Monday, but it would be nice to do it in the cooler weather forecasted for tomorrow morning. I may just hold off on my long bike ride this afternoon so I'm better rested for the run.

    7/2 - 9 miles
    7/4 - 1 mile
    7/5 - 7 miles
    7/6 - 5 miles
    7/7 - 1 mile (lift warmup)
    7/8 - 3 miles
    7/9 - 5 miles
    7/10 - 11.5 miles
    7/12 - 1 mile (lift warmup)
    7/13 - 8 miles
    7/14 - 2 miles
    7/15 - 5 miles
    7/16 - 10 miles
    7/18 - 10 miles
    7/19 - 3.5 miles
    7/20 - 14.5 miles
    7/21 - 8.5 miles
    7/22 - 10 miles
    7/25 - 18 miles
    7/26 - 7 miles
    7/27 - 10 miles
    7/28 - 10 miles

    Total: 160 miles
    Goal: 180 miles
    Remaining: 20 miles

I am just tapering and not running a few extra days this week and it is killing me!

I have done some (too much) shopping therapy, signed up for another HM in February of next year, booked hotels for my HMs through the end of the year... oh and researched which new running shoes I am going to order after this HM as I promised myself I would do :)

I printed out all the race information I need for SF, reviewed (again) the course map and discussed and plan for the race with my trainer and gone over it again and again in my mind. I have had all my running clothes out and ready to pack for days now...

Now I realized I may not even get a short run in tomorrow because of work interfering with my day off to drive to SF... This is how I feel

Look up concentric & eccentric calf muscle exercises. When I was struggling with some calf pain and tightness my trainer had me do a lot of these types of body weight exercises. Strengthening that area is tough and takes times but I was able to eventually get through the tightness and resume normal training. He wasn't too concerned with me doing a slightly reduce running volume as long as there wasn't any pain while i was running. I would spend a few minutes doing some stretches then a few extra minutes warming up. After 15-20 minutes it would loosen up enough to do easy effort running. I'd ice after the run and maybe wear some compression socks for a while as well.

Thanks! Me too. Since I met my July goal, I don't and won't have to push myself. I still feel like death, but at least I'm medicated. :joy: I think I'll just do some long walks until I'm done. I've got some 10K and 20K virtual races on the Zombies Run! App that I can do, so I won't be bored. lol

@greenolivetree - Thanks for the link!

@skippygirlsmom - That evaluation sounds great! My PT did something similar last week but not as extensive. That should definitely help with injury prevention.

    @Ohhim - Thank you!

@kristinegift - Oiselle is my absolute favorite! I love the Flyte tank so much. I have two and they recently added a bunch new colors. I feel you - their prices are high but I've found I love every single thing I've got from there. Distance shorts, Flyte shorts and Flyte tank are my current faves. I routinely check their website for sales.

@greenolivetree - I hope you get your lower leg pain figured out. Hopefully just an angry muscle!

I got in another 2.9 miles total today--2.15 of that running. It was hot, humid, and sunny today. I planned a route with a water fountain in the middle, but ended up having to run straight past it, as there was a group of creepy guys lounging around on the benches and rocks surrounding it. Think a group of like 8-10 guys, one of whom (the closest to the water fountain) was obese, shirtless, and sweaty--no thanks. So, I walked more than planned, but whatever.

That puts me up to 10.5 miles of running for the month, in total. That will probably be it for this month. We are closing on our new house tomorrow, so I will be spending lots of time packing, moving, building fences, etc.

@ceciliaslater I would've passed up that water fountain also :-/

@5512bf Thanks. I was looking online yesterday at compression socks but I may check out the local running store tomorrow. I just hate going in there (I like to be left alone in stores and not helped/guilted into buying things). Also considered putting my whole lower leg in a bucket of ice water but I did use some ice packs yesterday.

My leg sure seems to be getting more sore just sitting at my desk all day. Felt better this morning than now.

@Ohhim You've run a lot of miles with no rest :-o I'd be crawling by this point rather than running!

My wife just found NUUN at the local Target store. I have a tube of lemon/lime and tube of strawberry lemonade coming home to me tonight.

Maybe it's just allergies? I hesitate to say "just" allergies because they can be a pain in the butt.
