A little late, but I'd still like to join in for July! Between two insane weeks at work, followed by two weeks of vacation, I completely forgot about this challenge in June, but things are back to normal now. I'll increase my goal a little from 125km in May, and aim for 150km this month.
Bike rides this week:
5/7/2016 13.9 km work and back
6/7/2016 7.4 km work and back (a little more, but I forgot to start Strava for the first bit, so that doesn't count ^^)
7/7/2016 9.9 km work and back
8/7/2016 14.9 km to a friends place and back
9/7/2016 5.5km supermarket and back
---
July: 50.9 km of 150km done4 -
I sat on my bike today. The challenge was to get the leg without a piriformis muscle over the bike. I think I'll try the trainer before I think I can ride the road.

7/9 17.95 Finally some time off before sundown to do a quick ride. Tried a night ride last week but quickly learned to keep the mouth closed in Louisiana. I also think there are some vampire bugs out there that can keep up at 15 mph. I developed some nice welts on my back. Oh well...riding is better than working out there with them.

Good to hear you won the battle with the infection. It must be going around? The "other half" has been fighting one with a dose of prescribed antibiotics the past week.0 -

Five weekends in July so should be a big mileage month! No particular target apart from a solo century ride from Winchester. Maybe next weekend, weather permitting.
Saturday was (yet another...) changeable weather day so the planned long ride got a bit time-squeezed. Ended up getting hot, then wet & cold (cold enough to trigger my Raynauld's and lost all feeling in hands & feet for a while - in July!), then wet & hot when rain jacket turned into a sauna suit. Bit of sun, dull at times, calm then windy with wind direction constantly changing as showers rolled in.
You know you have upset the weather gods when you get a headwind on the same stretch of road in opposite directions!
45.6 miles @ 17.1 mph
Today (Sunday) is a far better day. Did a couple of hills (working on my weak point), climb to Newlands Corner gave a spectacular view of Surrey's North Downs (The Downs are actually ups not downs...) 1 mile steady climb at 5% average.
Pleased with a PR on Combe Lane which is just under a mile, averages 7% but gets really steep (17%) near the top.

55.4 miles @ 16.4 mph
101 miles for the weekend.
Got three rides in this week:
Took Thursday off work and headed to Surrey's well known Box Hill to have a play on quiet roads up/down/round the hill. Pleased to get PRs up and down Zig Zag Road.
Beautiful weather and stunning views.

41.3 miles and 2300' of elevation.
62.8 miles on Saturday into high woodland - including seeing and hearing a guy in the middle of a clearing all by himself playing the bagpipes. Very surreal moment.
22.2 local ride just to enjoy a nice summer Sunday evening.
126.3 miles for the week.
227.3 miles for the month.

Power meter is now over on my race/tri bike as the right tool came in today along with the forerunner 910xt mount kit. Looking forward to giving it a go on a longer ride tomorrow to figure out my (non-gym machine) FTP (as I suspect 280 watts seems a bit high for me). Used the power meter for a longer social ride yesterday, and was really surprised how much of an impact riding into the wind has on required power.

Got in a quick ride to/from dinner last night, and my first on my tri bike with the power meter on board. Not sure if I calibrated or applied enough torque to the pedal, but the wattage required to go 20mph in flats was abysmally small. Still, I'll do a longer FTP test today.

7/10 41.82 Took off early in the morning knowing that there was a 70% chance of storms by 11:00. On the way back I saw the storm clouds brewing. The wind and lightning started about 3 miles from the finish. I put the hammer down and just as I arrived under the canopy the deluge commenced.

@sijomial The bagpipe guy sounds surreal indeed. What a nice surprise during a ride!
@Ohhim Have fun with your power meter! I love "collecting data" (at least for running). If power meters weren't so expensive, I might be tempted to get one too. I actually had a look a week ago, after reading a bit about cycling training, but then I decided I don't bike enough that it would make sense to spend the money. Tbh, all the ones I found cost more money than my bike, that seemed a little out of proportions
However, I did buy myself a cadence sensor and tested it today on my ride to work.
An average of 63 rpm (over 4.3km). Hm, from what I read everywhere, that is on the slow side...
On my way home, I tried the entire way to stick to lower gears and go as fast as possible. I did actually manage to increase the cadence to an average of 77 rpm (for 12.5km), but now my legs are dead! Funny, I thought higher cadence should be more of a cardio effort and easier on the legs, but from the way my muscles are complaining, it looks like I was wrong.
11.07.16: 16.9km to work and back

Keep working at the cadence increase - it takes time to change the habits of a lifetime.
I changed my natural lazy cadence with indoor training over a winter and it makes a real difference - eventually. Still tends to drop when I'm tired.
Now averaging 80 but try I for 90 on big hills.
Yep bagpipes in the woods was strange - almost as odd as a full sized triceratops in someone's front garden I saw a few years ago.

Ended up doing 44 miles today on my fixie. Had initially just set out to go to the shop for some brake pads, but figured I'd just stick around on the bike and hit up some trails instead of coming home to get on my TT bike for an FTP test. According to my new multisport watch - paired with my ANT+ heart rate monitor, in 3 hours of riding (14-16mph) on a relatively inefficient fixed gear cruiser I burned 890 calories (i.e. 20 calories/mile). Sadly, just entering 3 hours of riding at 14-16mph here on MFP, it estimates I'd have burned 2,146 calories for that distance otherwise. I guess that would explain why my historical weight loss has been much slower than the site calculated deficit.

I don't now what that app is, but I can say that there must have been something at the duck pond that I ride to. The place has never been so crowded with people walking and staring at their phones.2 -
15.7 agonizingly slow miles with my 3 youngest children ages 11, 9, and 7. So, to any of you who may have been in this situation before: when riding s-l-o-w-l-y, like 6 mph, because that is as fast as your 7 year old can pedal, is it better to use a difficult gear so you feel like your legs are working even if you don't feel like you're moving? Or would it be better to use an easy gear so your pedals are going around even if your bike is not going forward?

@ cricketkate- I always had to use the lower and high rpm. If I tried the big gears I would still find myself pulling away getting into a rhythm. Might be why I ride today the way I do with no kid. I always use a higher cadence than a lot of riders I ride with. I have a 27 speed and I'm usually in 20 to 24 only hit the big gear with a good tail wind.
I just like the fact your able to get out and enjoy the bike again and your kids picked up the interest. It seems painful now but is setting a lifetime example for them.
Went through this with my son. He is a Police Officer and last year he was given the keys to a 2016 Dodge Charger. When the chief done this my sons says actually I see a Police Bicycle in the storage room can I take it to a bike shop and get it road ready and use that. When ask why of earth he would do that he says it was all the crazy long rides with my dad. lol5 -
