Tried out my run commute today (work to home) and there's trail or sidewalk the entire way! I left my car parked in the office lot, so I'll be running to work again in the morning. I left everything I'll need to freshen up and change... I hope.

Moved into my new place today! I'm not even close to unpacked, and I left my coffee filters at my old place, so I'll have to drink office coffee tomorrow, but other than that it's gone smoothly! Looking forward to settling in over the next few days and the weekend.

Fell woefully short of my goal, but considering the unexpected calf troubles and the crazy week I've had, I'm not even bothered. September is gonna be back in the 200+ range as will be October, and November will be pretty high up there too. I can't wait to start hitting 60-70 mile weeks!! See y'all in September!

And there you have it. I ran almost 70 miles this month. I'm sure that's more than I ever have before in one month. Tomorrow is a new month. I'm not setting any goals, just gonna see what I can do. For the next two months (September and October) I'll be working on doing intervals and keeping up my endurance until November when my real challenge will begin.

@MobyCarp Congratulations and that was a great speech about your retirement planning assessment. To many people start thinking about planning their retirement when they are 5 - 10 years from retirement.

I was going through the forum making little month end notes to many of the supportive inspirational members old and new ; then I came on the post from @mbaker566 and nothing seemed important. I send you a Hug Gentle Lady and hope you have lots of Family and Friends around to help you through this.

Your MFP Friends are here to offer what support we can. :'(<3

With the tropical depression moving through the area, my group team ride/run workout was cancelled so I ended up going to my team shop and hitting up their bike trainer this afternoon to preview and ride most of my next ironman 70.3 bike course. Luckily I got some validation that I'm not quite as weak of a cyclist as my power meter had me believe and so I'm feeling a bit better about my next race and what will be feasible for times.

With the rain not relenting, I ended up hitting up my (A/C less) gym and treadmill in my building for my final miles and speedwork session, doing 6 miles with 5x1K repeats at a 6:25/mile (10K) pace interspersed in the run. Without the A/C working in the gym (as it was up to close to 80) I just grabbed a fan, and by the final interval had the entire traeadmill covered with sweat but was still about 15 bpm under my max HR. I think I'll sign up for a few winter 10K/5K/HM races once I get through my next few marathons/ironmen races as I'm curious where my true pace is now for those distances.

Congrads to all who made their goals, or burned a bunch of calories trying!

    8/2 - 11 miles (w. 2 at MP)
    8/3 - 4 miles (w. 2 miles near threshold HR)
    8/5 - 12 miles
    8/6 - 11 miles
    8/7 - 20 miles
    8/8 - 7 miles (w. 6 at MP)
    8/9 - 11.5 miles
    8/11 - 10 miles
    8/12 - 20 miles (last 5 at MP)
    8/13 - 2 miles
    8/14 - 6 miles
    8/15 - 10 miles
    8/16 - 9 miles
    8/17 - 3 miles
    8/18 - 6.5 miles (w. 5x1K repeats at HM pace)
    8/21 - 15 miles (w. final 5 miles @ 8 pace)
    8/22 - 7 miles
    8/23 - 8 miles
    8/25 - 4 miles
    8/26 - 7 miles
    8/27 - 10 miles
    8/29 - 20 miles (w. 4 late in run @ MP / 7 pace)
    8/30 - 5.5 miles
    8/31 - 6 miles (w. 5x1K repeats at 10K pace)

    Total: 225.5 miles, 8 sessions with MP/threshold HR/speedwork running
Goal: 200 miles, 8 faster sessions
    Done!

    2016 Race Schedule:
    Disney Marathon - Jan 6 - 3:29:09
    Gasparilla 15K - Feb 20 - 1:01:59
    Ironman 70.3 Florida - Apr 10 - 5:07:51

    Ironman 70.3 Augusta - Sep 25
    Chicago Marathon - Oct 9
    Ironman Florida - Nov 5

We end August with one our favorite topics -Shoe Screwing..

@AdrianChr92 I'd think the screws would be uncomfortable if you didn't have a thick sole. Mine are minimal shoes, seems like it'd be running on rocks. Who did that last year? I can picture his avatar... I have yak trax In case we get ice.

@Elise4270 and @AdrianChr92 With minimalist shoes it might be a concern. I have one pair of self made screw shoes ( Mizune Wave Inspire ) - 5/16" Hex Head Sheet Metal Screws (commonly used by Heating and Air Conditioning for the Air Ducts) that I placed around the outer edge of the sole over the deepest parts of the Tread Pattern. I only used 8 screws and most of them are actually right on the outside edge of the sole so they are not under the Foot bed - therefore no danger of puncturing your foot. They are as good or better than the set of Carbide Tipped Ice Cleats I have.

@kristinegift Love your positive attitude about falling short of goal, but recognizing what caused it and moved on.
I made 132.5km of 140km. So your 165 Miles is 265km - double what I managed. Bows head in Respect :)

Today's run conclude this month's mileage. Not quite reach the goal yet but I am okay with that. I didn't quite know how to plan the runs after the HM anyway. Actually, I still don't know how to plan for the upcoming miles and create a goal for September. I think I will just head over there for inspiration :)

Last day of August! And my first REAL morning run! I woke up early and actually ran outside instead of at the gym. WHY HAVE I NOT DONE THIS BEFORE???! It was absolutely lovely. The temperature was 70 degrees and the sun was just starting to come up as I left the apartment. I did a 3.5 mile loop of the neighborhood (just as a test run to see what my time would be) and finished off with a cool down walking two laps around my parking lot. I was out for 50 minutes, so I could definitely extend it a little bit next time, maybe do 4 miles.

I was reading about things that are supposed to wake you up that aren't coffee, and chai tea kept coming up. Regular tea wasn't cutting it for me, so I tried the chai with some milk and it seemed to perk me up really nice. Either that, or the fresh morning air, or both! I had absolutely no problem with energy this morning. The 3.5 miles went by quickly and easily.

So, my closing numbers for August are: 69.1 miles running + 63.65 miles walking = 132.75 total miles for the month. I may add a mile or two walking on lunch today, but I'm not sure yet. Not a bad month at all.

I got an ankle x ray on Monday as it wasn't improving and thankfully its not broke but I've tore ligaments. It'll be a week old tomorrow and I'm still hobbling. I sort of fooled myself into thinking it be better by now. Does anyone know roughly how long I can expect this to take to heal. Also I'd need my mouth stapled shut as I can't stop eating - boredom & frustration. At this rate I'll have the 7lbs I managed to lose and more back on . Sorry for moan - I'm feeling a bit sorry for myself.

@Marissaxzxzxz Oh no, very sad to hear about another of our regulars with an injury.

You have every right to feel sorry for yourself.

At least for a while. You deserve fluffiness and pampering!

Rest, recuperate and restore. While resting, think about some alternative exercise you could be doing.

Sounds like it could be Core Time!

    Best wishes.

    End of month thoughts:
I was thinking about this while I was out for my Sunday run on the Prairie Path.

THINGS I HATE ABOUT RUNNING OUTSIDE

    1. Itchy legs
    2. Itchy bum
    3. Itchy crotch
    4. Walkers who walk 3-4 abreast and won’t move out of the way when I want to pass, forcing me to run on the grass
    5. Casual bikers who weave all over the path
    6. Dogs
    7. Women who can run in nothing but a sports bra and short shorts, and here I have to be in two bras, a sweaty tank top and long shorts. It’s not fair. (Before you say I can run in a sports bra and short shorts if I want to, trust me, NO ONE wants to see me like that, especially me.)
    8. Puddles that I can’t maneuver around
    9. Itchy ankles
    10 .Itchy feet
    11. Geese
    12. Poop from said geese
    13. Bikers who come from seemingly out of nowhere and scare the kitten out of me
    14. Cars who won’t stop for the pedestrians (me) crossing the street like the law says
    15. Itchy boobs
    16. Itchy ANYTHING
    17. Other runners who pass me, making me feel like a slow old fart (you are a slow old fart, Laura, get over it)
    18. How much I’m going to miss running outside when the winter gets here

Miss running outside in the winter??? Oh no you run outside in the winter.

Not the way they take care of our streets and sidewalks. Running outside in the winter in my area is asking for a broken leg.

Two words. Trail shoes. Where I live snow and bad roads are a way of life. Just gotta think about as Trail running bit road running.

Vouch for the trail shoes in the winter. In my first half marathon training program, the pace leader told me to get trail shoes for snow on the roads. I did so, and it opened neighborhood roads that had been previously closed for the winter to me. Worth. Every. Penny.

I can't believe we are even talking about this now. LOL It's still summer for crying out loud.
OK! I always post this every year (usually in like November tho). Screw shoes. So keep those retired shoes (at least one pair) off to the side for now. And then this winter make screw shoes out of them.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=us82woC7RMM

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcaR6yfzdQM

Screw shoes? But won't the screws get to my fleshy bits?

@AdrianChr92 Not as long as you don't use screws that have too long of a length.

Last night's run was a spectacular end to the month. I finally got to run in the rain and it was a beauty. I hit the bike path and nobody was around. there is a newly built extension off of the path (which typically follows along the river). The extension is a curvy, hilly path that snakes through the woods. It's actually fun to run up and coming back down is downright awesome. It offers views of the whole valley and the river. Last night there was a nice light rain and the sun was starting to peak through the clouds and reflect off the wet ground and the river. the fog was laying low in the trees. Lots of wildlife out too. I took my time and enjoyed every second of it. Only wishing I had my phone with me to take some photos. Although sometimes they just don't do it justice, so it's just as well.

I surpassed my goal by 18.2 miles, but fell 1.8 miles short of 200. I really wasn't thinking about it last night during my run, so no big deal.

So, there are so many congrats to go around here that I am not sure where to start. I am sure I will miss some. Congrats to @MobyCarp on the retirement and on "one of the best runs ever". Congrats @kristinegift on the new digs! Congrats @katharmonic on toughing it out and showing that hill how is boss! And congrats to @amandabridges266 on taking the plunge and joining the circle of crazy runners. Welcome...you are going to have a blast!
