    End of month question?

    1. Who was your most inspirational/helpful/model runner this month? (Not me, I did no running )

Even though I didn't run, Sister Madonna Buder (The Iron Nun) is my new hero. So much that I went to Catholic Mass today. o:)

My most inspirational runner is a racehorse, Arrogate, who won the Travers Stakes in Saratoga....his first stakes race and not only did he win it but he won big, defeated the Preakness and Belmont winner by 13+ lengths and demolished the stakes record set 37 years ago by General Assembly. Not only that but he set the fractions..the most impressive race that I have seen in a long time.
I get a lot of inspiration from race horses who run for the sheer love of it.

Got in a few miles on the treadmill while I was waiting for the washing machine to finish, then ran a few more miles to/from my polling place to cast my primary vote (Florida - Senate/House/School Board/Judges/Solar Ballot Initiative) before the polls closed while my stuff was in the dryer. Running outside mid-after in hot weather further reinforced how wonderful tradmills are in Florida, but for 3 miles, and a chance to exercise my democratic rights, I was good to put up with the heat. Planning a hard fast short run tomorrow in the mid day sun with my tri-team following our group ride to finish up my final "faster" session for the month (likely 5 miles at my threadhold heart rate range).

    8/2 - 11 miles (w. 2 at MP)
    8/3 - 4 miles (w. 2 miles near threshold HR)
    8/5 - 12 miles
    8/6 - 11 miles
    8/7 - 20 miles
    8/8 - 7 miles (w. 6 at MP)
    8/9 - 11.5 miles
    8/11 - 10 miles
    8/12 - 20 miles (last 5 at MP)
    8/13 - 2 miles
    8/14 - 6 miles
    8/15 - 10 miles
    8/16 - 9 miles
    8/17 - 3 miles
    8/18 - 6.5 miles (w. 5x1K repeats at HM pace)
    8/21 - 15 miles (w. final 5 miles @ 8 pace)
    8/22 - 7 miles
    8/23 - 8 miles
    8/25 - 4 miles
    8/26 - 7 miles
    8/27 - 10 miles
    8/29 - 20 miles (w. 4 late in run @ MP / 7 pace)
    8/30 - 5.5 miles

    Total: 219.5 miles, 7 sessions with MP/threshold HR/speedwork running
Goal: 200 miles, 8 faster sessions
    Remaining; 1 faster session

    2016 Race Schedule:
    Disney Marathon - Jan 6 - 3:29:09
    Gasparilla 15K - Feb 20 - 1:01:59
    Ironman 70.3 Florida - Apr 10 - 5:07:51
    Pittsburgh Marathon - May 1 - 3:08:25
    Ironman 70.3 Augusta - Sep 25
    Chicago Marathon - Oct 9
    Ironman Florida - Nov 5
    Rock 'n Roll Las Vegas 10K - Nov 13

@mbaker566 - Sorry to hear about your loss.
@mobycarp - Great insight on the 401K contribution. Was around 75% (full 401K + separate funds/employee stock plans/etc..) for most of my short career to get to retirement early, but I never really adjusted my standard of living much above college student levels, and was single w. no kids. Always looked at my colleagues funny when they bought vacation houses/bentleys/porsches/exotic vacations to the maldives/etc.. as they seemed just as miserable as me and could have followed a similar path to get away from the grind early.
@ariceroni - Sorry I won't get to race with you in Chicago. I hope your recovery goes OK and that you find some good alternatives (swimming?) to keep you motivated and in shape.

    August 29...4 miles...pace 12:00 hot humid weather
August 30...2 miles... pace 10:45 .ran out of time...preparing/cleaning house to sell (or rent).

Since 8/23, I have been sneaking behind my husband's back to get any kind of run in at all..he thinks that I spend too much time on myfitnesspal and running/exercising. I couldn't decrease from running 20 miles per week to "cold turkey." Feeling depressed about this whole situation and serotonin level is probably pretty low.

Didn't meet goal of 85 miles, but feel proud of the 54.76 miles that I did run.

Monday and Tuesday have been gorgeous running weather here. Unfortunately, Monday was also the first day at work for my backfill, and I worked a bit late both days doing as much knowledge transfer as possible. So I missed my easy run with 4 strides Monday, and I missed the speed work Tuesday.

The day was not without its rewards, besides the 1400 calorie or so excess eating. At my retirement lunch today, I was asked for a few words of wisdom. (Aside to readers - that's kind of a risky thing to ask someone who is retiring, You don't know what he might say.) What I came up with went something like this:

For all you younger people . . . I started working here in 1991. Part of why I took the job was that the pension was better than where I came from. In 1996, the pension was frozen, so I'll be collecting a pension based on 5 years of service and my salary as of 1996. It was clear that this would not come near the income I'd need to live in 1996, let alone 20 or 30 years of inflation later. I left the meeting where the freezing of the pension was announced, went back to my desk, and increased my 401(k) contribution to 16% (the most allowed by the plan at that time.)

People asked me, "How can you afford to contribute 16% of your salary to the 401(k)?" My standard response was, "How can I afford *not* to?"

    {pause for dramatic effect}

Today, I have one word to explain how that decision worked out: Goodbye.

This evening, my backfill and his boss are flying back to their home base. Tomorrow I'll turn in my badge and my computer. I expect I'll be able to leave early, and go focus my thinking on getting back to running.

Great retirement speech and response to freezing your pension.

@mbaker566 I'm so sorry....didn't you two just marry in the last couple months?
@ariceroni Sorry to hear about the foot
    @MobyCarp congratulations.....I'm jealous....and not quite financially ready
@ all who sent good wishes regarding Hurricanes Madeline and Lester: We are battened down/tied down/loose stuff packed away and propane/gas containers filled. Since we live completely off-grid (solar panels, cell phone service, and catchement water, we are less reliant on municipal services (and any grid-tied power failures). However, the wind could damage our solar panels and blow down the water tank. We shall hunker together!

Congratulations to everyone hitting their goal this month! Congratulations to all who didn't hit their goal too - you got out there and ran and that is an accomplishment in and of itself! I hope to see you all in the September Challenge!

I did get out early this morning when it was cooler, 70F. Unfortunately it was also 86% humidity. I was drenched when I got home - felt like someone had hosed me down and I was wishing someone would! Had strength training tonight and we worked primarily on legs and glutes in particular. I know I will be sore tomorrow and fortunately I am back to my regularly scheduled Wednesday rest day! The best news I heard today is it is supposed to cool down this the weekend and we may even get some rain the following week/weekend!

@dkabambe - congratulations on smashing your goal! You are doing great!
@instantmartian - what a lovely place to run!
@skippygirlsmom - Wow 139 miles! That is awesome! Is it the most you have run in a month? I think high for me was just over 130 last year.
@lporter229 - I thought from your pictures your pup was maybe part beagle?
@mom3over40 - @luluinca and I met up at a recent 10k up this way by exchanging cell numbers. We spotted each other near the entrance to the race. When it gets closer we can work out the details. Do you live in that area or will you be driving in? SInce it is a bit far for me I usually stay near the start.
@RespectTheKitty - love your running thoughts! Made me laugh out loud! I suspect we will be working on you to run outside this winter - early in the morning too
@ariceroni - I am so sorry about your injury! Hope you can hang out here with us and we can motivate you to do other workouts (horizontal running? just ask @Elise4270!) until you are healed enough to run again! Hang in there you will get past this too!
@MobyCarp - are you planning some fun destination runs now? :)
@HonuNui - hang on tight and don't get blown away!

Even though I didn't run, Sister Madonna Buder (The Iron Nun) is my new hero. So much that I went to Catholic Mass today. o:)

I gotta go with Galen Rupp. I'm sold on him when I saw his hat strategy. No man should be allowed to wear so many hats during a marathon. But he did it anyway. Absolute madman.

Also I was listening to Marathon Talk Podcast the other day and they were talking about elite marathoners and I was surprised how little the raced the marathon. Rupp had 2 so far and most of them never went past 2 a year. Eliud Kipchoge races two a year since 2013 and so far he has 8.

I've gone a bit overboard this month with 259 km (160 miles). Next month I'll set my goal to 250 cause I think I'll have a lower mileage week because ....wait for it....TAPER TIME. I can't wait for my first half but I don't wait for my taper :D

@MobyCarp Congratulations. That was quite a response
    @HonoNui Don't run k :D
@ariceroni Hang in there. I felt like I would never run again last time I had to take 2 weeks completely off. But the return felt so much sweeter
@MNLittleFinn I was thinking running spikes for snow

So sorry for your sudden loss. My sincere sympathies, @mbaker566

@ariceroni Glad you have an answer, even if it means a month or two off running. But some people spend all their lives off running, so you are way ahead already. My thoughts are with you.

@mbaker566 My sincerest sympathies on your sudden loss. May you have all the strength to see you through this awful time.

@HonuNui Fingers crossed you make it through the storm unscathed!

@ariceroni I can empathise with your injury, I had the same sort of stress fracture just under 2 years ago. I wish you a speedy recovery, I'm sure you'll be back to it in no time at all.

@MobyCarp That's a great speech, and who knows, you might inspire someone to make sure they have their own affairs in order. Sounds like you've played the system well.

I never thought I'd say this but... thank god for taper/injury! This week has been completely nuts. Every day this week I am going into work at 7:30 (an hour earlier than usual) so I can leave at 3:30 and run all around campus before all the offices close at 4:30 because of summer hours, so I can get forms signed and drop off forms that let me graduate; so I can pick up and drop off my thesis copies; so I can (hopefully today or tomorrow) meet with my new landlord and get a signed lease so I can get a parking permit so I can put my car somewhere in this town for the weekend. So much stress!! These early mornings/busy evenings would not work with running. And oh yeah, I'm also moving into my new place tonight!

Running tonight only because after I take all my crap out of my car I am then going to have to drive it to work, park it, and run home because I have nowhere to park near my house yet (see previous re: parking permit). Then I'm going to do my first ever run commute on Thursday morning! And no running group Thursday evening because I am treating myself to seeing Top Gun in a movie theater. :)

Too many posts to catch up on, but I hope everyone else is having less stressful weeks than I. I know @MobyCarp is probably feeling quite mellow in his shiny new retirement ;)
