    Think most Old World practicing cultures habour an underbelly of violence when bridal/marriage assets are insufficient. In my own culture, there is shame attached to side (bride/groom) when tribal gifts aren't matched, in a one upmanship volleying of gifting. Eg. We see your gift of x, meet it and raise you by gifting x. It's a real drawback when crickets are heard when one side cannot meet the other. There is more love displayed when a foreigner is married, as the native of the two splits in 2. If female, her father's side becomes the groom's relatives and vice versa.
