I get Chinese take-out every now and then. Usually order up a big fat bowl of battered lemon chicken... just get what I really want and skip the other stuff.

Japanese = not much better. Had a greasy dinner saved only by a late night stint on the elliptical. Not making that mistake again.

what did you eat? most Japanese food is amazing - tasty, low cal, healthy....

SoVILicious, you crack me up. It's not wontonWhore (where is your mind!!) it's Wor Wonton, and in fact, I had it for lunch. Tasty broth, a bunch of bean sprouts, a couple of florets of broccoli, a few slices of carrot, a few poached prawns, some poached chicken, a little char siu (Chinese barbecue pork) and a half a dozen pork and shrimp wonton dumplings all in a big bowl. Add some chili and you have a great lunch.

Most better Chinese restaurants no longer use MSG and although sodium can be a issue, if you drink enough water its really not an problem.

Chinese restaurants are no different than any other restaurants when you are watching what you eat. Of course anything deep fried is going to blow the calorie budget for the day. Stick to the dishes that are primarily vegetables and are stir fried. Skip the noodles and go for the steamed rice, brown if they offer it. For an appetizer have the egg drop or hot and sour soup.

I can usually eat a huge plate of Chinese or Thai food and come away under 500 calories. I usually opt for seafood over other meats, as it tends to be leaner. I only take a small portion of rice, maybe half a cup, to keep the calorie counts low.

I prefer making Chinese, Thai, Japanes, Indian food at home. That way you control what's in it!

If I have to go to a restaurant I don't count calories... I just presume my count is doomed for the day and move on. :P

certain foods are on my "athletic feat" list. It means I try not to have it unless it's a really special day or I have an extra 1,000 calories kicking around from a crazy adventure.

Greasy burgers, Chinese food and poutine all live on that list.

Only 568 calories? (This is why I don't do buffets)
  • I can go to Chinese restaurants, just not buffets, where "all you can eat" becomes a sort of "get your money's worth" challenge in my head, and I wind up sick.

This right here! I end up sick and feeling guilty!

"American" Chinese food is the worst stuff, ever! If a Chinese place says, "All You Can Eat Buffet", bad news! Even the stuff on the menu not on the buffet is bad news! I have a fabulous Chinese place I like to hit now and then in my local area. They REFUSE to even mention the word buffet! They only serve brown rice and white is offered but only on request. They have limited fried options otherwise everything is steamed or sauteed. Basically, they serve what THEY would eat.

My favorite Chinese restaurant is a local place that offers some of the biggest portions in the city, I think their combos have like, 2 pounds of food in them. I'd wager at least 2000+ calories depending on what you order. I try not to pass by there much...it's a nightmare smelling that deliciousness.
