Any thoughts on sugar substitutes? By tracking my intake, I really need to cut back on sugar!!

Personally, as I don't have a medical condition that requires me to watch my sugar intake, I don't track it. I follow fiber instead.1 -
When I did use them, my favorite was splenda. Tasted the most like sugar to me...0

There is sugar in fruit, vegetables and dairy. But sugar isn't dangerous. Don't get caught up in the hypes. Instead, balance your diet and aim for variety and assemble good meals you like. The amount of added sugar you will need and can fit into a well balanced diet, is so small that you can use real, plain, ordinary sugar.1 -

Ok, your diary isn't open so I can't give ideas on specifics, but one thing to keep in mind is that MFP doesn't differentiate between added and natural sugars. The naturally occurring sugars in fruits, veggies, etc get lumped into the same count as the sugar you add to your coffee or added sugars in foods. So you might want to look at where the sugar is coming from to see if sugar substitutes would even make a difference.
As for substitutes, I'm not really a fan, but my husband likes sucralose for his coffee. I feel like it has an aftertaste. I haven't tried any of the other ones out there, not being a coffee drinker myself or having any foods to which I would add sugar/sweetener. I have tried it in baking occasionally, but the small reduction in calories/sugar hasn't been worth it for me for the added cost.0 -
Good sugar substitute is steak, bacon or nuts.
In all honesty, i would try a few to see which taste best. I am ok with aspartame and i use stevia.0 -
How are you using it? Regular sugar isn't that high cal unless you really use a lot (4 cal/g) and in many cases you can just cut back gradually and be just as happy. Or with something like yogurt or oatmeal try adding berries or other fruit.
Never tried adding any artificial sweeteners since I don't really add sugar to anything where it would work (use it in baked goods and an occasional sauce). My parents use and like stevia, though.0 -

Could you try cutting back on sugar instead? I went from 3tsp of sugar in every cup of tea to none, and now even half a tsp is too sweet.
You didn't provide enough info in your post to give much more info. I've tried splenda and stevia, they were yuck and yuck! I'd rather go without or use real sugar, but less of it.1 -

Smash in? I don't think anyone trying to keep a balanced diet should be smashing anything in.1 -

Why would agave be preferable to sugar? And agree with the poster above, "smash in"?1 -
Crushed sugar cane is a pretty good naturally occurring sugar. Maybe that is what he meant by "smash in"?
Seriously though, splenda is my favorite artificial sweetener.1
