These photos show the sprite’s tendrils reaching as much as 100 kilometers above Earth’s surface. Sprites are major electrical discharges, but they are not lightning in the usual sense. Instead, they are a cold plasma phenomenon without the extremely hot temperatures of lightning that we see underneath thunderstorms. Red sprites are more like the discharge of a fluorescent tube. Bursts of sprite energy are thought to occur during most large thunderstorm events. They were first photographed in 1989.3

I've been planning to ski this trail tomorrow, it goes along the shore of a big lake near Snoqualmie Pass. It'll be incredibly scenic, even within view of the freeway. And it's just shy of 8 miles, meaning I'll have to go 16 round trip. The longest I've ever skied in a day is 12 miles. But this is flat as a pancake.
Only problem, it goes through some avy zones. They downgraded the forecast from considerable to moderate. I've never seen a forecast of less than moderate at tree line in the winter. And I want to do this before the snow melts.2 -
