Plateau or am I not eating enough, help!

I've been dieting since July 4th this year. I lost about 15 pounds in the first month but haven't lost any since then (it's been 3 months since I lost any weight) I'm 5'8" female and I'm eating 1,200 average per day. I started working out a lot a couple weeks ago, cardio and weight lifting 3 times a week for about an hour. My RMR is 1,800 according to the military calculator listed in this forum. My body fat is 20% (which I'm not sure is correct) and I weight about 185 but I'm not sure since I don't weight, only measure. Help? Am I not eating enough?

Have you been using a food scale to weigh all solid and semi solid foods and cups/spoons for liquids? If not, start there. Measuring and eyeballing food can easily put on over a few hundred calories.
Can you open your diary for us?
Yeah....1200 for someone of your height and activity level is faaaaar to little, but before you increase your calories, it would be great to know if you use a food scale and if you add and eat back your exercise calories on mfp.
Also, if you don't weigh yourself, how do you know that you're not losing? You could simply be retaining fluid..2 -
Thank you for the reply ♡♡ yea I opened my diary, it's a little embarrassing though. When I work out I also don't eat more to get up to 1,200 which is probably a mistake. And I know I'm not losing weight because I have old jeans that I use to measure the fit0

How can you possibly know that you lost 15 pounds during the first month and nothing since if you don't weigh yourself?
What is it that you measure? and how?
I admit that I am more than slightly perplexed.
Depending on your history and the whys that lurk behind your hands off approach to measuring your weight either off load the monitoring of your weight loss to a trusted advisor who will tell you if you're on track or not without giving you exact figures.... or desensitise yourself to scale fluctuations by recording your weight daily in a trending weight app, or web site.

How do you know your bf%? Which, by the way, is rather low for someone is supposedly over weight, unless you are fairly muscular.
I say supposedly only because is it possible you weight a lot less than you think, given you say you don't weight yourself.

Thanks for the reply, sorry for the confusion. I measure my waist and hips weekly and know that I was around 185 pounds at my current measurements. I don't weigh myself because the scale is an enemy of mine lol... I used to weigh and measure every day but I haven't weighed since Jan, really brought some peace into my life at least... it's a good idea to have someone else weigh me, thanks for the tip!0 -

I used a calculator listed in the top of this forum to measure my body fat so who knows.... I am more muscular than average for sure. If it sheds any clarity I'm 5'8", waist is 33" and hips (butt) is 46" my bra size is 36 c so idk if that's my chest size or not lol...0 -
Ok, the comments on your caloric intake are well intentioned, and you would likely put in a good spot by using your MPF profile and goals, but if you were under-eating, YOU WOULD BE LOSING WEIGHT.
Starvation mode under these circumstances is not a thing.
1. You need to use a scale to weigh yourself, probably once per week. I suggest weighing on the same day, the same time, probably first thing in the morning on whatever day you choose, naked and after you go to the bathroom. How did you know you lost fifteen the first month and now you haven't lost, because "pants"?
2. Buy a food scale, too. When you eat at home, weigh EVERYTHING in grams, except pure liquids, which you can use a measuring cup. Log it accurately, honestly, using entries that appear correct.
3. Be honest about your activity level and stats. I'm 5'8 and within a few pounds of your weight. I'm muscular. I lift three days per week. I wear an HRM and I burn 1,000 active calories per day, on top of BMR. That's with at least 90 minutes of cardio every single day, a minimum of 15K steps/6 miles--that's a lazy day. I'm not eating a lot over 1200. My daily average is around 1300, some days lower, some days higher. I'm meticulous about my activity and I'm meticulous with logging and my food scale. I've lost 109lbs since the beginning of April. Doctors are all ok with my intake, progress, and health indicators. If you are truly eating at this level and burning at this level, you would be losing.8 -

I don't know where you got that bf% but it doesn't seem right to me. I'm 0.5" shorter than you, 167.8lb, waist 29", hips 39", and just hit 25% bf after losing 16lb. I wear a US 8/10.
I'm not trying to come down on you and I want to make that clear. I'd like to help you figure this out. If you aren't willing to weigh in have you at least been tracking your measurements? Have you lost any inches?1 -

I'm your height. I'm fitting into, without lying onto the bed, size 8 jeans. I am, at minimum, 34lbs overweight, at 38 DD, and it still shows. My hips are smaller, waist 32. My body fat percentage is a lot higher than yours. This isn't adding up. At all.
Please, please, refer to my previous post. Get a scale to weigh yourself. Get a scale to weigh your food. Log it. Be honest about your activity level,2 -

You do not actually know your own weight. You say you have 20% body fat. How do you know this? If you were eating at 1200 at 5'8/185 at that activity level, you would lose weight. I am not trying to say you're lying to anyone here. Not at all. I'm asking you to reassess, with real information, and go forward from there.

My goal is 20% and I do Insanity several times a week and weights. I'm down from 32% to 25% and it has been a long slow road lol1 -

The body fat is probably wrong, i got it off an online calculator. I'm not sure what my highest measurements were, I believe my waist was 39 inches before i lost what i thought was 15 or so pounds to what i am assuming to be 185. My waist is now 34.5 inches. But it has stayed the same since my initial weight loss 3 months ago. Maybe I lost more? All I know is I went down only one jean size, from a 16 to a 14, I can fit in a 12 but it's a bit too tight still. Thank you for helping me1 -

Perhaps you could go a pharmacy and check your weight once per week? You need this information to get accurate calorie burns and eating goals.
At your height, muscular and bustier, I weighed in the high 240's in 16. low 230's when I squeezed into 14. Everyone's different. The point being, I needed to update my intake and input that actual body weight into my HRM to get an idea what I was burning.

Keep taking measurements. They can be just as effective in measuring progress as actual weight. I measure weekly. Maybe download an app where you can track your inches lost. You can also measure more spots. I know for me some weeks I lose from my lower body and some weeks my belly. It's not consistent overall and every time I lose anywhere I'm closer to my goal.0 -

At this point I'm a million percent sure that the body fat measurement is incorrect lol, i used an online calculator so don't sweat it. Yea, just remember that all body shapes are different. I probably wear a size 14 jean because i have a giant butt and no chest. Just like you probably have a larger chest than bottom. I don't understand about the activity level, I'm not sure if you think i'm lying or not. Or what is going on. So I'll just leave it. I am dedicated to losing weight, this isn't a joke to me or something that i would lie about to strangers online (although you probably get that here from time to time)0 -

It doesn't matter. I'm not saying you're lying. Let me make it clear. I did say in my post "everyone is different." It's not about your body fat percentage, or your body shape. Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to know if you're losing weight? I'm sorry that whatever I brought up made you feel like this was personal. It isn't. If you want answers, you must look at all the information and do so honestly.
You need to know how much you weigh, because that determines how many calories you should take in to lose weight.
You need to know how much you weigh, so that you can accurately determine your calorie burns, no matter the activity level.
You cannot get this information from measurements or clothing sizes. This is science.
You cannot know how many calories you are really taking in unless you are using a food scale to weigh all solids or semi-solids.
Once again, I am not making this personal, I am not calling you a liar. In a weight loss journey, being honest with ALL the info, including scales, is how we do this. I am trying to help.

Depending on your history and the whys that lurk behind your hands off approach to measuring your weight either off load the monitoring of your weight loss to a trusted advisor who will tell you if you're on track or not without giving you exact figures.... or desensitise yourself to scale fluctuations by recording your weight daily in a trending weight app, or web site.
Thanks for the reply, sorry for the confusion. I measure my waist and hips weekly and know that I was around 185 pounds at my current measurements. I don't weigh myself because the scale is an enemy of mine lol... I used to weigh and measure every day but I haven't weighed since Jan, really brought some peace into my life at least... it's a good idea to have someone else weigh me, thanks for the tip!

I used to be severely anorexic, not sure if that explains the fear of scale thing but hopefully a bit. I wish there were another way to do this. I saw a nutritionist for years who would weigh me to make sure i was gaining enough when i was recovering from anorexia and she would let me know if i had gained or lost but not the actual weight. I wish I could just see her again for her help to lose weight but I can't. I think I'm going to take your advice and have my boyfriend weigh me.3 -

I mean, I know what my measurements were at 185 so that's what I'm basing it off of also, generally. I'm 5'8" I wear a size 14 juniors jeans, my waist is 33, hips 46 and bra size 36 c
I don't know where you got that bf% but it doesn't seem right to me. I'm 0.5" shorter than you, 167.8lb, waist 29", hips 39", and just hit 25% bf after losing 16lb. I wear a US 8/10.
I'm not trying to come down on you and I want to make that clear. I'd like to help you figure this out. If you aren't willing to weigh in have you at least been tracking your measurements? Have you lost any inches?
The body fat is probably wrong, i got it off an online calculator. I'm not sure what my highest measurements were, I believe my waist was 39 inches before i lost what i thought was 15 or so pounds to what i am assuming to be 185. My waist is now 34.5 inches. But it has stayed the same since my initial weight loss 3 months ago. Maybe I lost more? All I know is I went down only one jean size, from a 16 to a 14, I can fit in a 12 but it's a bit too tight still. Thank you for helping me
Keep taking measurements. They can be just as effective in measuring progress as actual weight. I measure weekly. Maybe download an app where you can track your inches lost. You can also measure more spots. I know for me some weeks I lose from my lower body and some weeks my belly. It's not consistent overall and every time I lose anywhere I'm closer to my goal.

I'd suggest following the MFP calorie recommendation. I'm also in recovery for an eating disorder (bulimia) so I get the fear of the scale. I felt that way for years even though I dont now. You will have to weight to get the proper calories set but maybe find a support person who can do that with you.2 -
