Your doctor didn't give you any guidance on how to proceed, or a referral to a dietician? Why does he want you to go low carb?

I was also advised to lower my carb intake by my doctor due to really high triglycerides (sigh). She actually went over my MFP food diary with me to look how I could improve, but mostly pointed out where I was eating too many carbs, instead of providing suggestions for what to eat instead. I went to Google. There's a lot of low-carb recipes and ideas out there. I'm still figuring out myself. So far I've been eating a lot of eggs, tuna with spring mix or vegetables, and turkey bacon. I would really appreciate some more variety, so looking forward to any more responses in this thread...

There is a low carb group here on MFP that should be easy to find.

Here's a start: Skip the bread / buns when you eat fast food, cut down on fruit, eliminate starchy vegetables (corn and potatoes, for example), eliminate foods that contain grains and sugar. Eat mostly non-starchy vegetables, nuts, meat (including fish), eggs, and cheeses. Even some dairy (milk, for example) has a lot of natural sugar (carbs).

When I eat at a burger place, I skip the bun and fries and get a burger with no bun. Or I go to Subway and order a salad.

For Thanksgiving, I'm skipping stuffing, gravy, yams, mashed potatoes, and corn. I'm going to eat turkey, deviled eggs, cauliflower mash (similar to mashed potatoes), and green beans.

TLDR: Eat a lot of meat and non-starchy vegetables, not so much candy, bread, cereal, ice cream, or milk, and be careful about quantities of fruit.

Here's the Low Carber Daily group mentioned above: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/394-low-carber-daily-forum-the-lcd-group

If you like diet books, there are a few good ones. From higher LCHF to very LCHF:
    • Whole 30
    • South Beach
    • Dukkan
    • Wahl's Protocol
    • most Paleo or Primal books lean towards LCHF
    • Obesity Code (includes some fasting)
    • Atkins
    • The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living
    • Keto Clarity

Most start with cutting sugar and sugary foods (soda, candy, sugary baked goods), then refined grains (baked goods, bread, noodles, flours), whole grains (corn, oats, rice, quinoa), high GI fruits (mango, banana, grapes, dried fruit), and then starchy veggies (potatoes, carrots, onions).

How low carb you want to be will determine how many carbs you cut. Someone eating 140g of carbs per day may include some higher GI fruits, root veggies and whole grains in their diet. Someone who is very low carb (ketogenic) might just include veggies and a few berries in their diet.

Most low carbers will eat a whole food, paleo/primal like diet. Convenience foods are often higher in carbs.

    Good luck.
