My calves are sore. Does stair climbing do that? I climbed 7 floors yesterday just to see how far I could go. My heart was pounding and I was starting to sweat so I turned back. Lol! Nothing like stairs to make you feel completely out of shape. I have no stairs anywhere at home.

Feels like ages since I did a long run. I did miss one but with this week's coming at the end of the week it means it's been 18 days. Anyway, as my hill run this week was slightly shorter and less hilly than I would normally do, (it was same day as PT session and didn't want to tire myself out), I decided to throw some hills into today's long run. The plan was to do 24k (which would be a distance pr) and two climbs of the hill which I estimated would total around 200-250m climbing in total.

Anyway, I set out and felt good and had to work hard in the first few kilometres to keep my pace slow, but settled into a decent rhythm and my pace was pretty good throughout my run. The only problem today was temperature control - at 6-8C it was fairly warm, but there was a cold wind so depending on whether it was tail, cross or head and how exposed I was meant the difference in temperature was quite marked. I had single layer - thin tights, long sleeve top and thin gloves and alternated between feeling like I was close to overheating to getting really cold. (Not that you need to know, but my nipples were especially cold at times!)

Otherwise the run was really good. The route was slightly longer than I estimated - stopped at 25.7k in the end which left me about a mile cool-down walk back home. It also turned out to be more climbing than I estimated - totalling 330m (298m descending). All in all really pleased with today's run, not least because I can bank some calories for Sunday!!

Just jumping back in as I catch up with the posts. I'm about 7 pages behind. I'll get caught up on myself after I get caught up on all you fine folks.

    @kristinegift, @MNLittleFinn, @katharmonic love the winter photos!
@louubelle16 congrats on your HM! A smashing time, too! That sounds like quit a setup, with all those races, and all those different paces running repeatedly on the same loop. It forces you to have the self discipline to run your race at your pace. Spectacular job!
How do you guys can run with such awful weather??
@NikolaosKey this has probably been answered, but I'll give you my thoughts. You just do it. Adversity makes you stronger and I think there's a certain sense of pride in withstanding whatever weather is thrown at you. Clearly it can be done because people do it, so just go do it. It's 90% mental and 10% dressing in layers. @juliet3455 might be just a bit crazy though, running in the temps he runs in.
@midwesterner85 you'll have to tell us how that Osprey works when you get a chance to use it. I hear those are great packs and light weight. My Scott Jurek Ultimate Direction pack arrived a couple of weeks ago but I can't use it until I find where I hid it. I'd like to use it this weekend.
@orphia great pics! A nice contrast to the weather we're having.
@mobycarp, great race, even for your slowest time! Sounds like a fun race, fun conditions (if you're not after a PR) and I love the trophies. You wear the antlers well!
@OSUbuckeye906 what kind of shoes did you order?
@_nikkiwolf_ that trail photo is awesome! I would love to run that.
@shanaber nice photo of you and @mom3over40! Were they handing those emergency blankets out BEFORE the race or did you bring your own? That is an awesome view!
@skippygirlsmom I did have quite a snotcicle going but i carefully removed it before I took the picture since I sent it to a couple of non-runners.

That's it for now. 5 more pages to go to catch up!

    My Total/December: 78.75 miles
    Mike's Total: 49.25 miles

Mike wasn't feeling so hot this morning so we just did a short run. It wasn't raining, but it was "rainy" if you know what I mean. Wet from earlier rains and the wind blowing water off the trees and leaves so it feels a bit like it is raining even though it is not. I actually rather enjoyed it. The temp was around 62F. I like a rainy day every once in a while.

@BeeerRunner & @Elise4270 I am going to have to check out those Columbia windbreakers. I need a good jacket for running in the rain and I don't want to spend a lot because I still have about 60 pounds to lose which means, hopefully, it won't last me very long. Thanks for sharing!

    @Orphia Great pic!

Have a fabulous rest of the day everyone!

@7lenny7 They gave those out for people who picked up their race packet the day before. My husband and I just decided to keep those in our hiking bags for unexpected circumstances. They also gave out a pair of gloves which was nice, if only I remembered to wear them

    Nominal mileage goal: 100 miles
Real goal, get into the swing of Marathon training, and get used to doing 3 days a week of some strength/core while running 35+ MPW

Today's notes: Schedule was supposed to be 10 miles, so I got a long run in before spending time with family over the long Holiday weekend. Well, in a sign I'm maturing as a runner, I decided to cut my run short. 6.27 isn't even my longest run of the week, but with a head/chest cold and a 240 mile drive coming up this evening, it was the right thing to do. I'm already over my monthly goal by more than 20 miles, and there's always New years eve for a good long run.

A couple of days of no running - but I did cross-country ski to the point of exhaustion! I have never done it before and I took a lesson on Tuesday and ended up skiing for about 2.5 hrs. Then I went back out on Wednesday to another XC ski place (I was in Lake Placid) and skied for another 2 hours or so. Day 2 was a bit tougher course, especially when I made a mistake and went on the wrong trail (what I like to call the Terror Trail) and I fell all over the place. I have some spectacular bruising to show for it. But it was fun and I think I'm hooked. Hoping to get my own skis after the holidays.

So, today I'm back home and took Stella out for a run. The weather was sunny and quite a bit warmer, although the wind off the lake was chilly. Nice to get that run in. Tomorrow should be my long run but the weather forecast is for rain and the conditions on the trail where we meet are probably not going to be good. I'll have to see if I want to suck it up and be miserable but done, or put it off until later.

    Happy Friday everyone.

@skippygirlsmom - wow - those holiday runs! Loved the jacket discussion. Sadly I never need a jacket for running where I am. I just have one and one long sleeve shirt. The most I've ever had to do was wear both and then I got so hot, had to remove the jacket. Since I headed to NYC Monday, I have no idea what I will wear!

@7lenny7 - you've got some competition on your Christmas tree run!

@MNLittleFinn - good idea to hold back on miles today!

@louubelle16 - that pub run sounds so fun! As does your running group!

    12/1 - 3.2 miles
    12/2 - 1.5 miles
    12/3 - 45 miles biking + 1 mile run
    12/4 - 27 miles biking + 1 mile run
    12/5 - 4 miles
    12/6 - 4 miles
12/7 - 1 mile on treadmill for streak (after strength training)
    12/8 - 4.47 miles
12/9 - 1 mile on treadmill for streak (after strength training)
12/10 - 77 miles bike and 1 mile run for streak!
12/11 - 27 miles biking and 1 mile run for streak
    12/12 - 4 miles
    12/13 - 5 miles
    12/14 - 2.1 miles - day 21 streak + strength training
    12/15 - 4.5 miles
    12/16 - 1.5 miles
    12/17 = 44 miles biking + 1 mile run
    12/18 - 27 miles biking + 1 mile run

    12/20 - 6.07 miles
    12/21 - 5.02 miles
    12/22 - 5.4 miles
12/23 - 2.25 miles Rest day - so this was just for the Holiday Streak!

@skippygirlsmom Those Strava holiday runs are great, thanks for sharing. The snowman is so detailed, wow.

@MNLittleFinn Cutting that run short if you still have a chance to stave off the worst of the cold sounds reasonable. Better miss a few miles now than a week or two if you get really sick.

    @dkabambe Great run!

@shanaber Those pants are awesome! I'm always annoyed that running pants only seem to come in black, gray or that other gray.

@greenolivetree Yes, stairs are evil! Great exercise, but still evil >:)

@Louubelle16 sorry I was away and just saw the rain question. Looks like everyone gave great suggestions. Honestly I wear a light wear water repellent coat and it works fine for me. Skip who has bunch better *kitten* then me wears a new balance jacket she got at Fleet Feet, she's worn it in the pouring rain and not gotten wet. I can't recall what it's called dang. She loves it.

I posted the strava runs on our local running sit now some others have posted theirs too funny. This guy ran them on the trails, yipes!

Ran 5 miles today with Skip.

For those of you looking at Columbia, if you have a Kohl's near you they are are sale right now.

@greenolivetree I buy a lot of my running stuff at Walmart, it works for me. Skip is the one with the expense running clothes ha ha. Most of her stuff is Nike or Brooks. Nike because they tend to run smaller so they fit her 85 lbs 5'1" frame and also it's the brand of choice of the school so all her "practice gear" is Nike. Brooks because they make nice looking stuff, so jackets and shoes she does Brooks.

Oh yea joke on Skip, the Brooks water bottle she so nicely said I could have asking spending a million $ on her in Fleet Feet? It's a thermal bottle, hello score it's 14oz of keep things hot and cold yippee!!! me

@7lenny7 - as @mom3over40 said they gave them out with our packets but I actually brought one from a previous race. The ones in our packets were folded up in a very tiny package that is perfect for hiking, camping or an earthquake kit so I saved it :) I guess the organizers realized that us Californians are wimps in the cold and would not plan for it appropriately even if it was predicted to be in the mid-30's at the race start, so the gloves they handed out were very welcome. I wore mine for the first 3-4 miles.

@_nikkiwolf_ - the leggings are NIke and I got them on clearance last year. I couldn't pass up the price! I agree on the blah colors. But I am starting to see some hopeful signs with prints and designs, if they weren't just darned expensive! I keep looking for clearance ones to add to my collection though :)

@skippygirlsmom - awesome that you got at least a thermal bottle out of all of that! I would be too tempted to just buy myself something along with my daughter!

@orphia - great picture! I may have to try it. I also discovered I can remotely use my iPhone camera from my watch so I need to play with that too!

Getting ready to head out for a run as I am still not able to focus on getting any work done that I am supposed to be doing today!

@BeeerRunner congrats on the new PR! That's far bigger than any race I've been in. Sounds like quite an experience.
@greenolivetree When I used my Garmin FR220 on an indoor track, in indoor mode, it measured short. The track was 1/7th mile and after 7 laps it thought I had just run 0.93 miles.
    @HonuNui late Happy Birthday!
@mom3over40 great photos and GREAT RACE!!
We came to Mayo with 1 opening appointment with gastroenterology and we walked out with about 15 other appts.
That is the classic Mayo Clinic approach right there. Glad you made to Rochester safely. I was thinking about you guys when the snowstorm rolled through last weekend.

@skippygirlsmom Those are some amazing GPS tracks! Don't expect anything like that out of me. I have neither the time nor the creative mind to do something like that. Of course it does help if you have an open field like that, rather than being restricted by streets, trails and paths. Still, keeping your proper spacing must be really challenging.

Two non-running days in a row this week for me. Tuesday was a travel day, and it felt like I spent most of my time sitting around in trains or planes, but still I was wiped out when I arrived at my parents place. After a solid 11 hours of sleep, I still spend most of Wednesday lazing about, only did half an hour of strength training.

Thursday I went for a nice relaxed run along the coast. Today was less relaxed - my legs were feeling sore from the lunges and squats I did Wednesday night, so I figured I might as well "embrace the suck" and do some stair repeats on top of that B)
There are some long stairs (149 steps) near my parents home. I ran them four times, then I had enough and decided to head back home. Maybe I'll try to get up early before everyone else on Sunday and run them a few more times - that ought to burn at least half the Christmas meal calories at once!

Today's notes – A reprise of yesterday's route, a couple degrees warmer, with clear shoulders today. Wore a pair of Kinvaras, and they sure felt light after several days of running in Peregrines! Mile 5 came in at 7:30 even though I was feeling like it was easy, so I ran a stride from mile 5 on the Garmin to my driveway to finish the run.

A sign of recovery is, I felt good. I felt like I could run more. But 5 miles is what I am allowed today, so that's where I stopped. I can run 13 miles tomorrow, and I'll be right where I want to be for the week. The month will come in over the nominal goal, because next week I'll target 40 miles.

@_nikkiwolf_ Travel is exhausting! I did more stairs today too. Only going up! I figured out going down hurts my calves so I ride the elevator down then climb up. Lol. Fitbit says 19 floors, but not all at once.
