I suggest instead of one day at a time to take it a week at a time.

People often rush when they want their old body back NOW. They have confused urgent with important. Instead of trying to get back to who you were I suggest you set behavioural goals a week at a time for who you want to BE.

Dietary goals concurrent with a tight budget is to rely on more home cooking. Other than breads and cookies, your own meals will be much cheaper. Save money on veggies by depending on frozen where you can.

Week by week as you reach your goals, you should feel better regardless of what the scale says that week.

    Best of success to you.

I agree with the advice to take small steps so you don't get overwhelmed. I used to have a book called....ummm "changing habits" I think. I didn't agree with her approach in some areas, but I really liked her suggestion of picking one habit to change and working on that for a week. If I remember rightly, the first few weeks were something like this:
    - eat a good breakfast. By which she meant full of nutrition, something that will fill you up and make you feel good to start the day. Just focus on this for a week.
    - Next week, keep on eating that good breakfast but also drink more water. This isn't going to magically change your weight, but if you are in the habit of drinking high calorie drinks then it can be a positive step. Or at least focus on reducing unnecessary calories in things like soft drinks, alcohol, coffee etc. This doesn't mean you have to cut out everything you enjoy, but make smart choices to spend your calories wisely.

And I don't remember the rest, but you get the idea. Pick one meal and overhaul it for this week (breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner - whatever makes sense to you). Next week keep on with this good habit and add in something else.
Now I think about it, I need to get back on track, so this is probably a good idea for me too!
