Took my snowshoes for a walk - 1,900 calories (pics)

Well, that isn't true. They're not my snowshoes. I sold my snowshoes. They've heavy and awkward and force you to walk with an unnatural gait; in a word, they're unpleasant.

I made plans to hike with a friend. Once I got in his car, he and his wife told me we're snowshoeing instead, and they brought an extra pair for me. Great.

Somebody crashed in front of us on the freeway, then we crashed, too. We spun out in the traffic lane on I-90, then we were spinning across the snowy median, and right when I expected the car to flip, it came to a rest gently. We were stuck, though, and sitting ducks until Highway Patrol came and pulled us out. First words out of his mouth: "Kinda embarrassing to be stuck in this car, don't you think?" Officer Friendly then stepped in front of a moving car with a flare and two cones, and closed a lane so we could get back on the highway.

Nobody was hurt, so we decided to stick to our plan.

Unfortunately the misadventure cost us an hour, and we had to turn around before we reached the lake we were after. But we had four and a half hours on the trail.

    Nice! Love this area - haven't been out snowshoeing yet this year but I hope to get out soon! I have to go with friends who drive Subarus because I know my vehicle can't do snow!

    3. Not sure friends who turn a walk into snowshoeing are that good of friends.... :)
    4. pictures are beautiful. Plan to do the same over Christmas (except I know that ahead of time)

    BTW, Costco in Canada has snowshoes and poles for $85.

    And why are you carrying the snowshoes in most of the pictures? Didn't someone explain they go on your feet?

    Absolutely stunning! Am envious of all that snow already! Snowshoeing is my favourite thing to do in the winter.

    Tell her to buy them from a place like REI or Backcountry.com because they'll give her a full refund if she doesn't like them or doesn't like snowshoeing. Also tell her to get the smallest ones her weight and snow conditions will allow, because the smaller they are the less they'll get in the way.

    Nope, that kind of winter is not for me! Driving in that weather seems like a nightmare, the cold would kill me, and all the pretty trees in the world wouldn't convince me to live there.
    I've had one seriously cold winter experience (Sweden in January), and I'm glad I did it, but once was enough.
    It's going to be almost 30c outside today, clear and sunny, that's my kind of weather!

    Thanks for sharing your pics though, I can certainly appreciate the beauty of the forest in the snow, as long as I don't have to be there in person!

    OP: I've got a VooDoo Blue FJ like the one you were in and it would have been embarrassing (but not impossible) to get stuck driving it in the snow or whatever.

    Glad no one was hurt in the spin out.

    I also have a nice pair of Atlas snowshoes and Keen insulated boots that I need to use. Was thinking about driving up to Tahoe to do so but it's too crazy to drive up there around Xmas & New Years, so that'll have to wait til later.

    I have a pair of Crescent Moon Gold 12 (running) showshoes and some La Sportiva GTX trail runners--I can't wait until we get a little bit more snow here in New England so I can go out in them!

    Great pictures! Snowshoeing (or snowshoe carrying) is great exercise, and there's no better place to do it than in the Cascades. Just watch out for the tree wells. In past years we've gone up from Paradise (Mt. Rainier), and on the closed forest service road just past Crystal Mountain.
