My poor bike hasn't been touched for the last 10 days Still too much ice and snow, after two almost-falls on my last commute I decided to wait until the ice is gone from the bike lanes before trying again. And the indoor trainer I ordered two weeks ago still isn't here - apparently, the shipment got lost. Amazon's sending a new one, which will hopefully arrive in the next few days...1 -

Zwift is making the indoor cycling a lot more fun. My overall totals so far: 383.2km. This is a mix of indoor and outdoor rides. Surpassed my goal for the month, so going to up it to 500km by Jan 31.

Trying to stick to my Trainer Road plan. I have a hard time staying focused on indoor rides longer than an hour. How does everyone here avoid boredom?
Jan 2: 9.3 mi, 45min. Thunderbolt - TrainerRoad
Intervsls and being very specific in the ride also play maths games. If just ride aimlessly on the trainer very boring but if do intervsls and have to be in a correct zone for 10 minutes power or heart and cadence at a certain revs then easy 5 mins or what ever the intervals are. Having something to concentrate on helps a great deal0 -

Starting to plan out the year ahead....
Will do my usual New Forest (100 miler in May) and Ditching Devil (128 miles in June) Audax events but if the Spring weather is kind and I get plenty of time outdoors I may change up the New Forest ride to the longer route that adds a loop of the Isle of Wight (124 miles).
There's a couple of unsupported long rides I want to do this year, one near Winchester and the other around the Trough of Bowland. Very tempted by a London - Paris ride for my first taste of foreign cycling.
Right now I've a bit of Christmas weight to lose and hitting the weights hard and training indoors on a Wattbike Pro in the gym and with my hybrid on a turbo trainer in the garage. Really looking forward to getting outside when weather improves.
76 miles so far this month, mostly indoors.
Added another 66 (indoor) miles this week.
Hope the weather improves soon as indoor training is getting dull.
Got a week's holiday coming up soon in Fuerteventura so I'm going to investigate bike hire while I'm there - don't tell my wife!
Week in Fuerteventura was good though! Had intended hiring a road bike but chatting to the bike hire shop owner convinced me to try some mountain biking for a new experience.
Good choice as it turned out. Explored volcanoes and a drop dead gorgeous coastal dirt/rock/gravel/sand road.
Also learned that the brakes tend to be reversed on the continent by locking the front on a fast descent when I thought I was squeezing the back brake - oops!
The main roads are well maintained, loads of dedicated cycle tracks and considerate drivers - that plus 21c temperatures made it biking heaven.
May turn out to be an expensive holiday as I feel I need a MTB in my garage now.
I used a Specialized Rockhopper - anyone have opinions on them or an alternative for a "doing it in the dirt" novice?

Okay, there's no way I'll make my goal. Almost three weeks of ice and snow, during half of which I was sick anyway, and the indoor trainer I ordered got lost during shipment - nice combination of excuses, isn't it?
The snow still hasn't disappeared, but the resent shipment arrived today. OMG, I had no idea how hard it would be to ride on rollers! My first attempt was a complete disaster - maybe 5 minutes, during which I rode off the rollers at least ten times. I spent the next half hour watching youtube videos with beginner tipps before I dared to try again. Second time was slightly better, but only because I kept a death grip on the doorway with one hand for the entire 10 minutes. After dinner, I did another 10 minutes. I'll just keep practicing as much as possible, sooner or later I'll hopefully be able to ride with both hands on the handle bar...

I think France & Germany mostly have the front brake on the left, Italy and U.K. on the right. No idea about other countries. When I bought my bike, I had to listen to a small lecture from the seller explaining that why swapped the handles (bike of Italian origin, but French owner). His choice was fine with me, since my old bike was German, so the French setup seemed natural to me. Until then, I never even considered that anyone might have the rear brake on the left...

Woohoo! I just spent another 20 minutes on the rollers - the last 7 or 8 minutes of that without holding on to anything!
That probably doesn't sound very impressive, but after the first try I was afraid it would take forever to learn. It took a helluva lot of concentration, and after finishing I was dripping with sweat despite the fact that my bike computer claims my average speed was just below 20km/h. But I'm still super happy with this last "ride"

And happily, I reached another goal! I was working toward a "lifetime" (since I've been keeping track) cycling kilometre goal of 160,000 km. This month, I reached that goal and by the end of the month I reached 160,246.8 km.

I fell way short of my goal but I'm training for a duathalon in March so I'm concentrating on my running which is my weakest aspect. I'm strong on the bike so have no worries there. Next week we're going to be introducing the transitions between running and bike and back to running again. I'm also doing TRX sessions to strengthen my core and therefore support my dodgy back.
I'll join the February challenge but maybe set my goals a little lower until after March.1 -
