I've never been so ready to turn/sprint downhill in my life, but I did make it up that pass that day.
I rode the Highwood Pass fondo this summer and had to carefully watch a bear by the roadside... nothing like coming down one of the few downhills on the ascent portion and having to ride the brakes grrrrrr0 -
